Abstract
The appts resembles a lathe, where two centering pipes are used to feed gas through the bore of the pipe/being case hardened. Each pipe is mounted on a block driven axially w.r.t. one pipe by a work cylinder, to clamp the pipe between the centres; and each block has a drive unit which rotates the centres and therefore the pipe. A trolley is driven in a direction parallel with the axis of the pipe, and is fitted with a ring induction, heater and a ring spray for coolant used to quench the pipe. The centering pipe used as the gas inlet pref contains an internal jacket through which cooling water flows to keep the gas cool before it enters the pipe; and the trolley pref. carries rollers it enters to support the pipe, esp while the latter is hot. Automatic case hardening of long pipes which are supported during the process so they do not kink or bend.
