Abstract
The variable speed permanent magnet motor has plate type permanent magnets (4) arranged between field concentrators (2) forming the poles and the motor frame (3). In between pairs of field concentrators (2) is a magnetic material core (5) around which is wound on winding (6). One end of the core (5) is in contact with a field concentrator (2) there being an airgap (9) between the other end of the core (5) and the other concentrator (2). The winding (6) are excited so as to produce in the cores (5) a flux which is in the opposite sense to the flux from the permanent magnets (4). The permanent magnet flux passing through the cores (5) is thus reduced when the windings (6) are excited. Consequently the flux passing through the air gap is reduced and the motor speed is lowered.
