Abstract

The semi-rigid carpet for highway surfaces constitutes a mixture of bitumen macadam and cement mortar. A gap-graded macadam with mineral aggregate is deployed with the resultant voids completely filled with mortar. The mortar used includes a binding additive in the form of bitumen emulsion. The resultant carpet has uniform density and strength characteristics. The carpet may be produced by adding to and mixing the mortar with a pre-mixed macadam. The composite material is then transported to site and liad. Alternatively, the macadam may be laid on site and the mortar added. The bitumen macadam may be produced by hot or humid mixing processes.
