Abstract

An auxiliary load is connected in series with the output from a current regulator in order to protect the regulator from damage due to short circuit load conditions. The auxiliary load impedance is varied depending on the regulator terminal voltage. A current regulator (1) with zener diode (2) protection against over voltage conditions is connected via diodes (10) in series with an auxiliary load impedance comprising a resistor (5) in parallel with the collector emitter impedance of a transistor (6). The voltage drop across the diodes powers a driver circuit for the transistor. This circuit comprises a comparator (9) followed by a preamplifier (8) and an amplifying (7) stage which is Darlington connected to the variable impedance transistor. Adjustable resistor (17) permits setting of the voltage level at which circuit operates.
