Abstract
A process for mfg. steel by refining pig iron with industrially pure O2 is described. The O2 is introduced via a lance and at the same time the metl is stirred by bottom blowing with an inert gas opt. mixed with O2. The process combines the advantages of both bottom blowing and O2 lancing. Various grades of steel can be obtd. The quality is improved due to a low rate of decarburisation, significant rates of desulphurisation and dephosphorisation and a lowering of the amt. of O2 dissolved in the metal. Less basic slags which contain smaller amts. of Fe oxide can be worked. This leads to reduced consumption of lime, O2 and oxidised Fe. The O2 blowing time is also slightly improved. Desulphurising or dephosphorising agents may be added with the bottom blown gas. Measurements necessary in automated process, e.g. analysis and temp., are more exact and the results are better.
