Abstract
The process is for the manufacture of an inflatable balloon for sealing a vascular lesion such as an aneurism or an artero-veinous fistula. A metal rod has a polished surface covered in a coagulant, and has a small diameter cylindrical needle fixed to and in line with a larger-diameter sleeve is immersed vertically in a latex bath (12) so as to cover both needle and part of the sleeve. The rod covered with coagulated latex, is withdrawn from the bath and the latex is heat-treated on the rod so as to form a thin rubber skin in the form of a glove finger with a closed end and an open one. The finger is then withdrawn, being shaped to conform with the rod. The smaller diameter portion ultimately forms the balloon, while the larger one acts as a funnel for the easy insertion of a catheter.
