Abstract

Fittings, e.g. connecting sleeves and a branching sleeves, are mfrd. for electric cables insulated by a synthetic matl. by (a) surrounding the end of the cable, or the ends of two connected cables, by a mould with filling openings, (b) introducing an expansible resin mass into the mould, (c) expanding-solidyfing the mass, the internal cavity of the mould being in communication with the space surrounding the mould during expansion. The resin mass introduced into the mould is characterised by (1) having a viscosity of 500-10,000 cP/20 degrees C, (2) having a degree of expansion of 2.5-25, esp. 10, (3) having an initiation time of at least 5 secs., and a pot life of 40-200 secs., (4) forming a foam contg. 85-95% closed cells, and (5) forming a foam whose adherence to the cable conductors is sufficiently high to provide a tear strength of at least 5 daN/cm2. MEthod gives efficient prodn. of fittings with a good resistance to moisture and homogenous foam structure. The fitting bonds strongly to the cable.
