Abstract

The rate of increase of pressure drop across a filter medium is reduced so that more liquid can be filtered before the filter is cleaned, by using a basic filter medium made of fibres of a fixed dia. woven into a felt of known pore dia., thickness end density. An unwoven mat of fibre is formed upstream of the basic medium an in contact with it. The fibres have the same dia. as those in the basic medium within plus-or-minus 40%. The mat is at least ten times thicker than the basic medium and its density is at least ten times less. Used in filtering liquid-solid mixtures. The amount of liquid filtered over a unit area before the pressure drop becomes excessive is increased about 100%.
