Abstract

The ball joint (15) is made from two lengths of stainless steel tube with the outside diameter of one part (12i) being a good fit in the bore of the other part (12e). The inner member (12i) is annealed whilst the outer member is used in the hard drawn condition. The mating surfaces are subjected to an anti-seizure treatment before the tube (12i) is fitted inside the other (12e), with an overlap about equal to the tube diameter. The two tubes are placed in a spherical die and by the endwise compression of an internal rubber plug the spherical portions (12a) and (12b) are expanded outwards providing a close fitting ball joint.
