Abstract

The distance between the substrates is determined by a number of spheres which have the same diameter. The spheres are arranged between the substrates in a layer with the diameter of the spheres of corresponding thickness adhering to the substrates. The spheres are surrounded by an adhesive agent which holds them on the substrates. The adhesive agent also serves as a connection between both substrates. The liquid crystal cell consists of two opposed substrates made of insulating material. The space between the two substates, which face each other, is normally between approximately 13 and 25 mm wide and filled with liquid crystal material.
