Abstract

Continuous biological treatment plant for the purification of polluted effluent esp. sewage, in which flocculated sludge is continually sepd. from purified liquid and recycled. Comprises a closed top, funnel-shaped filter chamber with overflow channel discharging purified liquid. The filter chamber is enclosed in a treatment vessel coaxially above a reaction space into which polluted effluent is delivered to be put into controlled circulation by a rotary agitator in conjunction with baffles, pref. with vigorous oxidn. by e.g. compressed air jets. The open bottom inlet of filter chamber is partly screened by an open-en ed funnel providing a circulation channel from which a top fraction of liquid under treatment rises into the filter chamber, leaving coagulated sludge to drop back into the reaction space. Released gases and foam rise to a vented head space from which consolidated foam collects on top of the filter chamber to run back to the reaction space.
