Abstract

Waste water from a wine distillery is treated by a process of filtration on marc so that a portion of the water and all the mineral and org. matter in suspension are absorbed. The unabsorbed water is eliminated by circulating the liq. until exhausted over >=1 evapn. column. The filtration is effected under cover in the hanger; this is lined at the base to prevent loss of liq. and to keep out surface drainage. Means are provided for handling the marc with a view to its evacuation 40-80 wt.% of the waste water is absorbed by the marc. The excess water is collected in a pit and pumped to a storage reservoir. It is then evapd. in a wetted-wall column in counter current with air through which it is recycled until exhausted. The mineral salts and the organic matter become conc. and the final liq. is directed to the small marc filter where the whole of the concentrate is absorbed. The treatment is completed without evacuating any portion of the waste. The mineral and org. elements coming from the grapes are restored to the marc which now has a commercial value as a soil conditioner.
