Abstract

The presence of one fluid in another fluid is effected by measuring the variation of permittivity of a sample with respect to a reference. A detector circuit comprises a capacitor (1) immersed in a container (2) containing a hydraulic oil sample. An inductor (6) is connected across the capacitor and to one side (4) is connected an alternating current generator (7). To the other side is connected a potentiometer (9) whose slider (10) is connected to an amplifier (12). In the absence of water in the oil the capacitor and inductor form a circuit in resonance with the generator frequency while the presence of water will cause an increase in current through the potentiometer and thus an output from the amplifier to an alarm.
