Abstract

The torque transmitted by a rotating shaft is measured by placing two tracks 22, 21, with identical markings onto the shaft, well apart and perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Two or more reading heads, preferably four, are placed in the same line parallel to the axis of the shaft and one opposite each track. In rotation the outputs will differ in time according to the relative twist between the two tracks-and hence on the torque. Preferably the tracks and heads are magnetic and the signals applied to two dual input ORs whose outputs drive the set and reset inputs of a flip flop. Its output is integrated and applied to an opamp with a preset offset voltage to allow for alignment errors.
