Abstract

Paper sheets are lifted from a pile by a suction device and fed via an alignment device to a printing press and a sensor detects the absence of a paper sheet on the suction device and temporarily stops the press whilst the suction device attempts to pick up a sheet, or detects the presence of >=1 sheet and temporarily stops the printing press whilst the suction device re-deposits the sheets and attempts to pick up a single sheet. The sensor pref. includes a cam or ram operated pivotal lever which is moved in synchronism with the operation of the suction device so that a bent end of the lever clamps the paper held by the suction device against a stop. The position of the lelver indicates the thickness of the paper held and may be detected pneumatically, photoelectrically, inductively or by capacitance effect, alternatively the stop may be defined by a spring biassed feeler whose displacement after clamping is measured to indicate the thickness of the paper clamped. The arrangement operates consistently and accurately and complete shut-down of the printing press is prevented.
