Abstract

A mechanism for detecting the presence of gas in the mud of a borehole comprises 2 telescopic components assembled in the line of boring bars, and a series of sampling devices connecting these 2, having smapling chambers increasing in volume when the telescopic components are moved relatively to each other from a first to a second position. A passage joins the sampling chamber to the outside and a valve seals the sample within the chamber when its volume is increased, so as to reduce the pressure of the sample. The movement of the variation in weight of the boring bars read off an indicator shows the character of the samples collected.
