Abstract

Cladding comprising a support sheet with a series of ribs on one face which intersect to frame rigid inserts of similar thickness which cover most of the face of the support sheet. Also cladding comprising a ribbed support sheet which may be installed on a wall or floor prior to receiving the hard inserts. Pref. the support sheet is backed by a second material with good thermal and acoustic insulation properties, pref. a foamed plastic material, with a heavily ribbed or studded reverse face. Pref. the insert pieces are slabs of stone, tiling, wood blocks or veneers, about which is cast a plasticized PVC or a rigid or semi-rigid polyurethane composition. Pref. the inserts are pre-coated with an acrylic and/or methacrylic resin solution to improve adhesion to the PVC. the insulated backing is esp. of a foamed of expandable layer of PVC, polyurethane or polystyrene resin.
