Abstract

The display is viewed from a direction such that the line of sight intersects the front surface of the liq. crystal cell. A series of gratings, adjacent the rear surface of the cell, permit illumination of the cell by light incident on the rear surface from all directions other than those coinciding with the line of sight. The cell can also, when it is in its opaque state, send light incident on its rear surface along the line of sight, when this light is emitted from a source which is not in line with the latter. The gratings are formed by parallel, non-reflecting, light absorbant, lamellae projecting from the cell rear surface.
