Abstract

A latent image is formed by irradiating in a transparency a photosensitive coating (e.g. ammonium bi-chromate in gelatin matrix) on a metal plate (e.g. upper) and the non-irradiated zones of the coating are removed by a solvent (e.g. water) to expose the metal plate in conformity with the pattern. The plate is then heated to secure the irradiated zones of the coating to the plate, and the exposed parts of the plate are chemically etched (with e.g. Fe perchloride) to a controlled depth to provide an etched pattern. The plate is then cleaned with pref. potassium hydroxide to remove the remainder of the coating and the engraved zones filled with a colourant pref. a wax based ink. Pref. excess ink is removed from the non-engraved zones by scouring and the plate is polished before a protective layer of clear silicone varnish is applied.
