Abstract

Shaping sheets of plastic materials having a high dielectric loss factor by a combination of independent heating of the core zone of the sheet (by induction heating) and the surface zone (by superficial heating) and then compressing the sheet to deform the general thickness and simultaneously mould surface detail. Pref. a cutter simultaneously separates the moulded piece from its parent sheet or blank. Esp. for shaping synthetic or coated sheet up to about 10 mm thick for leather wares shoes, furnishings, bags etc. from materials such as PVC or polyurethanes, as individual or stacked sheets with or without expanded or reinforcement (textile)layers. Describes equipment with chilled platens which also comprise the lower h.f. electrode and which turn or reciprocate through an h.f. heating station, a radiant heating unit, a moulding/cutting press tool and a loading/unloading station. Pref. a silicone rubber moulding block is used. Use of complementary heating systems ensures surface and bulk flow in a minimum cycle. The pinching of two residual rigid layers inhibits lateral skewing of the sheet(s).
