Abstract

Water-extendible thermosetting polyester resins used for the production of lightweight casting or mouldings. The polyester is mixed with water, a catalyst system (suitably Co octoate, dimethylaniline and methylethyl ketone peroxide pref. about 2% catalyst referred to resin) and 3-7% of a surfactant with a hydrophilic/lipophilic equilibrium value of 1-9 (preferably a sorbitan fatty acid ester, especially sorbitansesquioleate) to form a water-in-oil emulsion, to which a mineral aggregate is added to aid the release of water after casting. The surfactant used is particularly able to allow the removal of water after activation, extending, emulsifying and curing of the resin. Up to 90% of the water can be removed from the cured casting. The finished article can be sanded, sawn, polished, worked or glued, mixed with fillers and used as a substitute for wood, gypsum, ceramics or other plastic. It can be painted. Very little shrinking occurs on the removal of water.
