Abstract

Device permitting a more economical use of the dimensions of a mould for casting steel consists of fitting at the edge of the mould a raised edge of a different material than that of the mould, raising the level to which the mould can be filled with metal. The material of the raised edge is such that under the heat of the solidifying metal it looses its shape and strength. This method makes it possible to cast more metal into the mould by eliminating the need for covering the molten metal with a substance preventing cooling at the surface. Fewer moulds need be used for the same amount of cast steel.
