Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled crystals, economically by cooling an aqueous solution of acrylamide in a double-pipe or multitubular heat exchanger, in which the aqueous solution is passed through the inside of cooling pipes, made of stainless steel and electropolished and a refrigerant liquid is passed through the outside thereof. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of acrylamide is cooled in a double-pipe or multitubular heat exchanger, in which the aqueous solution of acrylamide is passed through the inside of cooling pipes made of stainless steel and a refrigerant liquid is passed through the outside thereof, to crystallize the acrylamide. In the process, the cooling pipes are characterized in that the inside thereof is electropolished. The liquid flow velocity at the cooling heat transfer surface must be increased to carry out the cooling and crystallizing of a substance readily causing scale deposition, e.g. acrylamide. A multitubular heat exchange capable of increasing the heat transfer area is particularly preferred for the type of the cooler. The effect of the electropolishing seems to produce good results on a scaling phenomenon of acrylamide crystals by the change in surface conditions of the metal.
