Abstract

Fault current release having a U-shaped magnetic yoke (10), a permanent magnet (32) for the pre-magnetisation of the magnetic yoke, a hinged armature (26), which is loaded in the open direction by a spring (30), and, in the rest state, is attracted to the pole surfaces of the yoke (10), and having a coil (18,20) which is wound round a limb of the U-shaped magnetic yoke and is connected to a secondary winding of a summing current transformer, do not respond to direct fault currents in specific directions. In order to achieve directional insensitivity, the permanent magnet (32) is arranged such that the magnetic flux or the magnetic field direction produced through it is directed equally into the two yoke limbs (14,16). A coil (18,20) is wound around each of the two limbs, which are connected to one another such that, depending on the direction of the fault current, the magnetic field in the one limb is amplified and that in the other limb is at least partially increased.
