Improvements introduced in the object of the main patent no. 431,856, granted on may 3, 1976, by: "a process for the purification of a gas mixture", the improvements referring to a process for the production of a composite catalytic structure used in said purification, which comprises providing a coating containing copper on a substrate containing nickel and at least 10% chromium by weight, the coating being nickel-deficient relative to the substrate, and heating the coated substrate in a protective atmosphere to a temperature of at least the copper melting point, thereby producing a catalytic structure containing nickel, chromium and copper, the surface of which is stratified or which, after treatment in an oxygenating atmosphere, or during the use, develops stratified oxide layers and an oxidized lower layer rich in chromium.
