Abstract

The grain tank of a combine harvester is fitted with a sensing device to actuate the tipping of the tank by an amount related to the quantity of material in the tank. The tank 14 can pivot in the direction of travel about a hinge 12 and is fitted with a discharge screw 16 situated in a trough 15. A sensing device comprising a plate 18 mounted on a rod 20 is pivotally connected to the wall 22 of the tank, with a rod 32 pivoted to the rod 20 extending into an hydraulic valve 24 such that it is displaceable axially against a spring 26. The rod 32 is arranged to abut the piston 40 of the valve 24 when the plate 18 has moved a definite distance. When the tank 14 is full, the plate 18 is subjected to a pressure, under which the rod 32 and spring 26 adjust the valve 24 to a neutral position. To empty the tank, the drive of the discharge screw 16 is switched on and the main valve 46 is set to "lift", so that the pressure fluid flows from the pump 58 via 54 to the valve 24 and via 50 back to the fluid tank 52. When the tank 14 has been emptied to such an extent that the load is removed from the plate 18, the rod 32 moves away from the piston 40 and the valve 24 is actuated so that pressure fluid passes from the pump 58 along lines 60, 54 and 43 into a lifting cylinder 44 on each side of the tank. The tank is thus tipped about 12 until the plate 18 is again acted upon and the valve 24 is reset in its neutral position. The process is continued until the tank is emptied, when the main valve 56 is set to "lower" and the tank resumes its horizontal position. The sensitivity of the sensing device is adjustable in accordance with the specific gravity of the lightest material to be put in the tank. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the tank is in two parts, one part 70 secured to the harvester and the other 72 tippable about a hinge 12a. The operating procedure is as before. Strips of rubber 82 are fixed to the walls 78, 79 of the tippable part 72 to form a seal between the two parts of the tank. In other embodiments, the valve 24 can be operated electromagnetically by a relay, or by photo-cells or like devices measuring the volume of material in the tank.
