Abstract
Porous films are made by the process of the parent Specification, modified in that the solidified extrudate is drawn down at a ratio of at least 20 : 1 and annealed and is thereafter stretched to increase its length by not more than 150%, followed by heating while restraining it against any greater shrinkage than 15% of its length. Polymers specified are polyethylene, polypropylene and polyoxymethylene. The product density is usually less than 95%, suitably 50-75% of that of the non-porous polymer, and has high N 2 , O 2 , CO 2 and water vapour transmittance. Pore size is generally 1000-2000A. A polypropylene film is claimed per se when it has pores, 20-50% of which are in this range. In one example the pores of a polypropylene film are filled with Ag, NaCl or nickel chloride-dimethylglyoxime.
