FIG. 9 is a graph showing the changes over time of the release of menthol in the mainstream of cigarette smoke with respect to that of a cigarette with a cellulose acetate filter and that of a cigarette with a paper filter.

Best way to carry out the invention

The cigarette filter of the present invention encompasses a so-called single-segment filter formed by a single filter plug and a so-called multi-segment filter comprising a plurality of filter caps that includes a filter plug of the upstream stream and a Current filter plug below. In either case, each of the filter plugs includes a cylindrical body, generally in the form of a circular cylinder, of the cylindrical shaped filter plug wrap, and a filter material disposed in the cylindrical body. Illustratively, the filter plug includes a rolled (wrapped) filter material with a filter plug wrap. In the multi-segment filter, the plurality of filter caps is wrapped with a forming paper in order to join them together. In the present invention, the terms "upstream" and "downstream" are based on the direction of the flow of the mainstream of tobacco smoke passing through the inside of a cigarette.

In the present invention, the single-segment filter filter plug wrap is made of a paper of a specific high rigidity and high permeability. In addition, in the multi-segment filter of the present invention, the filter plug wrap of at least one filter plug and / or the forming paper is made of a paper of a specific high stiffness and high permeability.

The high stiffness and high permeability paper used in the present invention has a longitudinal stiffness (stiffness in the longitudinal direction) of paper of 30 or more, measured in accordance with JIS P8143 (paper stiffness test method by bending by the weight itself) and an air permeability of 1000 CORESTA units or more. Preferably, the high stiffness and high permeability paper has a longitudinal stiffness of 30 to 400 and an air permeability of 1,000 to 30,000 CORESTA units.

Table 1 gives examples of papers of high rigidity and high permeability for use in the present invention (represented by symbols S1 to S4). Table 1 also includes a porous filter plug envelope of high air permeability generally used today (the conventional filter plug envelope, represented by the symbol P).

The case will be described in which, a cellulose acetate cigarette filter is used as a filter material. As mentioned above, it is common practice to add a plasticizer, such as triacetin, to a filter, in an amount corresponding to 5 to 10% by weight based on the weight of the cellulose acetate fiber, in order to impart a determined hardness to the filter. However, when the paper of high rigidity and high permeability according to the present invention is used, the same filter hardness can be achieved as up to now even with the addition of plasticizer in an amount corresponding to less than 5% (including 0 %), based on the weight of the cellulose acetate fiber. It does not suggest that when the plasticizer is added to the fiber of

each other by means of a nozzle paper 130 in such a way that the end faces thereof are joined together in the same manner as in conventional filter cigarettes. The nozzle paper 130 may be provided with ventilation holes 131.

In the cigarette with filter shown in the figure. 3, the paper of high rigidity and high permeability, according to the present invention, is used as a wrapper of filter plug 321.

Examples

The present invention will now be described with reference to the following Examples.

Example 1

Filter caps were produced according to the routine procedure, using the papers indicated in Table 1 above as filter plug wraps. The filter material used consisted of a conventional cellulose acetate cigarette filter having triacetin added thereto, in an amount corresponding to 6% by weight based on the weight of the cellulose acetate cigarette filter. Each of the filter caps had a circumference of 24.5 mm and a length of 25 mm. Each of the filter plug wraps covered the circumference of the filter material in fair relationship. The hardness of each of the filters obtained was measured.

In nature, the hardness of each of the filters should be measured in the state of the filter attached to the cigarette. However, due to problems related to measuring instruments, it is difficult to measure the hardness of each of the filters in the state of the filter coupled to the cigarette. Therefore, the hardness of each of the filters was measured in the form of a filter plug before being installed in the cigarette (hereinafter, the filter hardness will have been measured by the same measurement method).

The hardness of the filter was measured using NFQA (filter quality measuring instrument) manufactured by JT TOSHI. The results are shown in FIG. 4. The hardness of the filter was calculated from a deformation that occurs in the filter after the application of a certain load. Consequently, the less deformation, the greater the hardness of the filter. Therefore, in FIG. 4, the lower the hardness value of the filter, the harder the filter.

It follows from FIG. 4 that the filter hardness of each of the filter caps, provided by the high stiffness and high permeability papers S1 to S4 in accordance with the present invention, is increased with respect to that of the filter plug provided with the envelope of Filter cap P commonly used today P. All filter caps provided with the paper of high rigidity and high permeability S1 to S4 according to the present invention showed an air permeability of 1000 CORESTA units or higher. In addition, the paper S4 of high stiffness could be achieved which showed an air permeability equivalent to that of the filter plug wrapper P currently employed today.

Therefore, the use of high stiffness and high permeability paper in accordance with the present invention makes it possible not only to achieve retention or increase of filter hardness, but also to avoid problems of the state of the art of making ventilation holes, that is, an increase in the cost of manufacturing cigarettes, low versatility for a variety of cigarette products, including a low tar or similar cigarette and poor product quality stability.

Example 2

Filter caps were produced, with the same size as in Example 1, using the wrapper P of the conventional filter plug and the high stiffness and high permeability paper S4 indicated in Table 1. The filter material was the same filter. of conventional cellulose acetate cigarette than in Example 1, but the amount of triacetin added to the cigarette filter was changed (amounts equivalent to 0 to 12% by weight based on the weight of the cellulose acetate fiber). The hardness of each of the filter plugs obtained was measured in the same manner as in Example 1. The results are shown in FIG. 5. In FIG. 5, line a indicates the results of the use of the filter plug envelope P, and line b indicates the results of the use of paper S4 of high rigidity and high permeability.

It follows from FIG. 5 that when the paper S4 of high rigidity and high permeability is used, regardless of the amount of triacetin added, the hardness of the filter is increased with respect to that of the filter plug using the wrapper P of conventional filter plug.

As mentioned above, in current cigarettes, triacetin is added to the filter in an amount of 5 to 10% by weight based on the weight of the filter material. However, it is noted that when S4 paper of high rigidity and high permeability is used, the filter hardness can be increased without the need to increase the amount of triacetin.

In cases where the amount of triacetin is lower, it has been found that the hardness of the filter shown when the conventional filter plug envelope P is used and the amount of triacetin is approximately 6% by weight, it can be achieved by using triacetin in an amount of approximately 3% by weight if
