Description

Composici6n de acabado para tratar hilos Finishing composition for treating threads

La invenci6n se refiere a una composici6n de acabado para tratar hilos y a hilos que comprenden dicha composici6n de acabado. The invention relates to a finishing composition for treating threads and threads comprising said finishing composition.

ANTECEDENTES DE LA INVENCION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

To improve their characteristics, the threads are usually treated with a finish or coating. Such treated threads, also called fibers or strands, may show better breakage resistance, friction coefficient, wear, fatigue, antistatic properties, and the like.

Griffin European Patent Application No. 0 474 467 teaches a liquid composition comprising a silicone oil, a wax emulsion, and a silicone surfactant. This liquid composition can be applied to threads. This composition can be easily applied using contact roller methods without corrosion or otherwise destruction of the application equipment. However, this composition does not lead to better wear and fatigue properties.

In US 5,503,755 it is disclosed that aqueous dispersions, waxes and polysiloxane containing dispersant are suitable as finishing agents, in particular as very permanent softening agents and sewing capacity enhancing agents, especially for colored articles. For this purpose, a dispersion having a polysiloxane: wax ratio <1 was used to treat a single cotton jersey knit fabric.

There is a need to improve the wear and fatigue properties of threads, preferably by applying a suitable finish. This need is felt especially when the threads are wet, as is normally the case in the underwater and marine industry.

BREVE DESCRIPCION DE LA INVENCION BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention relates to a finishing composition for treating threads, comprising a mixture of silicone oil emulsion and a waxy emulsion where the amount of silicone oil is 0.5 to 10% by weight, the amount of wax is 1 , 5 to 25% by weight, the total silicone oil and wax is 2 to 35% by weight, and the ratio of silicone oil: wax is <1. These% by weight are based on the total ingredients, including water , of the finishing composition. It was found that these finishing compositions, when applied to threads, greatly improve their wear and fatigue properties. Therefore this invention also relates to threads that comprise the composition mentioned above.

DESCRIPCION DETALLADA DE LA INVENCION DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

There are some notable differences between the composition of this invention and the composition described in European Patent Application No. 0 474 467. This patent application describes the use of silicone oil, while in the present invention both silicone oil and The wax is used in the form of an emulsion. Even more important, the only amounts of silicone oil and wax and, more particularly, the relationship in which they are used are of importance to obtain the beneficial effects of the composition currently claimed. Surprisingly, it seems that the silicone oil: wax ratio should be <1. When the ratio is greater than 1, as in the case of European Patent Application No. 0 474 467, the wear and fatigue properties of the finished yarn do not They improve.

Preferably, the amount of silicone oil is 1 to 10% by weight, the amount of wax is 3 to 25% by weight, the total silicone oil and wax is 4 to 35% by weight, and the silicone oil ratio : wax is <1. More preferably, the amount of silicone oil is 2 to 4% by weight, the amount of wax is 6 to 12% by weight, the total silicone oil and wax is 8 to 16% by weight .

The silicone oil of the invention can be any suitable silicone oil that can be emulsified in water. Preferably, the silicone oil has a viscosity of

1.000 a 1.000.000 centistokes a 25°C, mas preferiblemente 10.000 a 300.000 centistokes. Preferred silicone oils are polyalkylsiloxanes, polyetheralkylsiloxanes, and mixtures thereof. Emulsions of polyalkylsiloxanes are commercially available, for example the emulsion of polydimethylsiloxane Tego Emulsion HOTM (in Hansa Textil Chemie GMBH). Preferably, the silicone oil emulsion has a viscosity of 10 to 500 centistokes at 25 ° C.

The wax component of the finishing composition is not very critical, and in principle any suitable wax such as oil waxes, poly (ethylene) waxes, Fischer-Tropsch waxes, and natural waxes can be used. Preferred waxes are selected from paraffin wax, carnauba wax, mountain wax, and oxidized poly (ethylene) wax. The waxes are used in an emulsion in water comprising 10 to 80% by weight of the wax, preferably 30-60% by weight.

The finish may comprise auxiliary compounds normally present in finishes, such as surfactants. Suitable surfactants are silicone surfactants, for example copolymers of polydiorganosiloxane-polyoxyalkene, which are known in the art.

The finish is applied on the yarn in an amount of 4 to 50% by weight, preferably between 4 and 35% by weight, and more preferably between 8 and 16% by weight. The finish can be used for a yarn selected from polyester yarn, polyamide yarn, polyurethane yarn, aramid yarn, and poly (ethylene) yarn. Most preferably, the finish is applied on aramid wire. The most common aramid yarn is made of PPTA polymer and is available as Twaron® (in Twaron Products), or less preferably, Kevlar® (in DuPont). The finish is applied to the thread by methods known to a person with ordinary experience. A suitable method is, for example, the application by means of a contact roller, a finishing bath, or a liquid applicator. The finish can be applied on the thread as a combined emulsion comprising the wax and silicone oil emulsions, or in a two-stage process where the wax emulsion is first applied on the thread and then dried, followed by application of the silicone oil emulsion on the wire, optionally followed by a drying step.

Twaron® 1010, 1680 detex yarn (in Twaron Products) with F1 and F2 finishes was treated before entering a steam chamber using a liquid applicator consisting of a ceramic plug and a metering pump before the heating section. The finished wire was heated at 200 ° C in the 10 m long steam chamber. Its residence time was 8 s. The finishes were applied on the wire in amounts of 5 to 12% by weight. The F3 finish was somewhat unstable and had to be stirred before application. This finish was applied on the same Twaron feed wire using a ceramic pin and a laboratory dosing injector. The finished thread was not dried in the steam chamber. The finish was applied on the thread in an amount of 5%. The finishes Fw and Fs were applied on the thread in the same way as finishes F1 and F2, in an amount of 5 and 3% by weight, respectively. The F4 finish was obtained by first applying 5% by weight of Fw on the wire and drying the wire, followed by the application of 3% by weight of Fs, after which the wire was no longer dried in the steam chamber. The total amount of finish on the thread was 8% by weight. The threads were examined for their wet abrasion properties using the Flory test (Flory et al., Resistance to Abrasion of Polymeric Fibers in Marine Conditions, Proceedings 2nd International Conference on Polymers in a Marine Environment, London, 1989, pp 197-204). Instead of three 25 mm pulleys, a 20 mm upper pulley and a 35 mm pulley and a 20 mm lower pulley were used. The distance between the upper pulleys was 10 cm instead of 14 cm. The tension weight was 40 mN / tex, and the length of the routes was 48 mm instead of 50 mm.

Las tres poleas se The wet flexural fatigue properties were determined in the Alma test (Fig. 1). For this test, the wire was made to a cord of 1680 dtex X 7, Z30. The cord having a theoretical cord diameter of 1.22 mm was fixed on three 40 mm pulleys according to the figure, and loaded with a weight of 10% of the initial resistance to breakage of the cord (21 kg) . The cord was continuously moistened with running water. The three pulleys are

Los resultados se indican en la Tabla 2. 5 moved from right to left and vice versa (1 return movement) with 35 return movements / min, which led to 35x2x3 = 210 changes per flexion / min. The number of changes per flex was determined before the cord rupture. The test was repeated 18 times and the average of flexural changes is given as the Alma test. The results are indicated in Table 2.

It can be concluded that the use of silicone oil as such (F3) does not provide threads with acceptable wet abrasion properties and wet flex fatigue. The use of silicone oil emulsions improves both wear and fatigue, even when the silicone oil: wax ratio is greater than 1 (F2).
