THE HEIGHT OF THE WELL IN WHICH THE WATER COLUMN IS FORMED IS SELECTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE OWN WEIGHT OF SALT WATER EXERCISES ENOUGH PRESSURE TO CROSS THE SEMIPERMEABLE MEMBRANE. A PLURALITY OF COLUMNS MAY BE ARRANGED. THE COLUMNS ARE ARRANGED IN THE SUBFLOOR AND ARE COMMUNICATED WITH THE SEA THROUGH AT LEAST ONE DUCT OR CHANNEL OF A SLOPE ENOUGH FOR THE SALT WATER TO FLOW TO THE UPPER INLET OF EACH COLUMN. FRESH WATER OUTLET FROM THE FILTERS IS COLLECTED IN AT LEAST ONE TANK ARRANGED UNDER THE COLUMNS OF WATER FROM WHICH THE SURFACE IS PUMPED. LIQUID WASTE FROM FILTERING IS COLLECTED IN AT LEAST ONE WASTE TANK FROM WHERE THEY ARE PUMPED TO THE SURFACE. A SERVICE GALLERY IS ALSO PROVIDED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE COLUMNS, WHICH ALLOWS ACCESS TO THE FILTERS OR SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANES FOR MAINTENANCE.
