Abstract

Culture medium for the detection of S. agalactiae in clinical samples characterized by incorporation in media containing starch or its amylase and/or maltooligosaccharide fractions (with 3 or more glucopyranosyl units linked by [alpha]1-4 bonds) to activate the formation of pigment. The maltooligosaccharides can be added as chemical compounds, as glucopolysaccharide hydrolysates or as glucopolysaccharides and hydrolytic enzymes (amylases, glucoamylases or phosphorylases). This avoids the addition of animal serum, and these media can be used similarly to those which employ serum as media for detection and transport/incubation, for direct inoculation of samples, their incubation beginning immediately, assisting the rapid diagnosis of S. agalactiae through the detection of its orange pigment.
