Abstract

This expert system for determining the extinction parameter in radioactive samples in liquid phase is based on analysis of the logarithmic spectrum of height of pulses from an external gamma source of radium <226>. The method proceeds by adjustment, normalisation, and study of the end of the spectrum produced by the external source. This system has the capability to evaluate the extinction of any given sample, regardless of its degree of extinction. The expert system is applied in measurements of extinguished liquid scintillation specimens, or in radioactive solutions lacking any type of scintillator and able to produce Cherenkov light. It is therefore applicable in all areas of radionuclide measurement. In particular, in industries devoted to the construction of liquid scintillation nuclear equipment and especially in environmental monitoring around facilities which employ or produce radionuclides, such as nuclear power plants or particle accelerators.
