Abstract

Procedure for the biological disposal of nitrates and/or nitrites using Klebsiella oxytoca clone-15. A new strain of Klebsiella oxytoca, identified as K. oxytoca clone-15, is able to use nitrates and/or nitrites as a source of nitrogen, so it can be used for the biological disposal of nitrates and/or nitrites contained in industrial effluents, water and soils contaminated by said compounds, by means of a process which involves the inoculation of said contaminated effluents, water and soils with a culture of said strain. This strain is able to degrade nitrates and/or nitrites present at a concentration of up to 100 mM, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The procedure has application in the disposal of nitrates and/or nitrites contained in contaminated industrial effluents, water and soils, providing an effective solution to the environmental problem associated with the treatment of said contaminants.
