Abstract

This process for obtaining phosphoric acid from a phosphorus-containing rock by a wet route uses hydrochloric acid or a mixture of hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid as an intermediate agent for attacking the phosphorus-containing rock. The reaction is preferably performed at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. The phosphoric acid obtained is extracted using a selective organic solvent from which it is separated by re-extraction with water under countercurrent flow at moderate temperature. The aqueous phase from the solvent extraction which essentially contains calcium chloride, non-extracted phosphoric acid and some of the solvent used is treated with sulphuric acid, precipitating calcium sulphate, which is separated out by filtration, and regenerating the hydrochloric acid which is recycled to the reaction stage together with the non-extracted phosphoric acid. In this way dissolved P2O5 and some of the extraction solvent can be recovered, liquid effluents can be eliminated and phosphorus-containing rock of any origin and any phosphorus content can be used without fine particle sizes being necessary, so conventional grinding is unnecessary.
