Description

  • The invention relates to an adapter for a balcony drain, which balcony drain has a housing with an inlet opening and an outlet opening, wherein a grating is arranged in the inlet opening, wherein provided in the grating is an insertion opening for a standpipe for coupling to a balcony drain of a higher-lying balcony.
  • GB 684514A shows a balcony drain which has a housing with an inlet opening and an outlet opening. This housing is cast into the concrete slab of the balcony, so that the inlet opening is arranged on the upper side of the concrete slab and the outlet opening debouches on the underside.
  • Arranged in the inlet opening is a grating with an insertion opening. In GB 684514A this grating is horseshoeshaped, but an annular grating is also frequently used.
  • A standpipe can then be inserted with one end into the insertion opening and be connected with the other end to the outlet opening of a balcony drain of a balcony lying thereabove.
  • Water that ends up on the balcony will flow to the balcony drain via a slope and find its way via the grating into the housing and, from there, be discharged via the outlet opening.
  • When the balcony is not completely clean, for instance because tree leaves have blown onto the balcony, this dirt may cover the grating, making the water unable to flow away.
  • DE 3436828 describes a balcony drain with a more or less tubular housing, which protrudes through the concrete slab and protrudes partially on the upper side. In the vertical wall of the protruding part openings along which water can flow into the drain are provided just above the surface of the concrete slab. A standpipe can be inserted into the protruding part of the balcony drain in order to thus couple a balcony drain lying thereabove thereto.
  • Owing to the inflow openings in the vertical wall of the protruding part, dirt from the balcony will block the balcony drain less easily.
  • Replacing a balcony drain with grating, as known from GB 684514A , with a balcony drain with vertical inflow openings, as known from DE 3436828 , will not be simple. Although the problem of blocked gratings can be reduced or even prevented with the replacement, it does mean that a part of the concrete must be broken away to enable removal of the old balcony drain. The new balcony drain must then be placed in the broken-away part and be finished with concrete or cement. The balcony drain is usually arranged in a recessed part of the balcony in order to improve drainage, although this recess will impede replacement of the balcony drain further.
  • It is now an object of the invention to reduce or even obviate the above stated drawbacks.
  • This object is achieved according to the invention with an adapter for a balcony drain, which adapter comprises:
    • a tubular housing having at a first end a connecting piece for connection to a standpipe and wherein the cross-section of the other end corresponds with the insertion opening of a balcony drain, such that the other end of the tubular housing can be inserted into the insertion opening, and wherein inflow openings are provided in the wall of the tubular housing;
    • a funnel arranged in the tubular part, wherein the funnel-like part lies with the upper edge against the inner wall of the tubular housing between the first end and the inflow openings and wherein the outflow of the neck of the funnel extends beyond the inflow openings in the wall of the tubular housing.
  • With the adapter according to the invention an existing balcony drain with grating need not be removed. Only the standpipe is removed, and the adapter can then be inserted with the other end of the tubular housing into the insertion opening of the balcony drain. A slightly shortened standpipe can then in turn be inserted into the connecting piece of the adapter.
  • The existing balcony drain with grating is thus also provided with inflow openings in a vertical plane in simple manner by means of the adapter according to the invention, this reducing the chances of blockage of the drain considerably. The inflow openings can have any desired form and preferably extend over a relatively great height, so that water can still be discharged even when dirt lies against the inflow openings.
  • The adapter is also suitable for similar drains, such as for apartment building galleries or drain stacks, wherein a standpipe mutually connects drains lying one above the other.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the adapter according to the invention a peripheral flange is arranged on the outer side of the tubular housing between the inflow openings and the other end of the tubular housing.
  • The peripheral flange ensures that the adapter is inserted into the insertion opening of the balcony drain to the correct depth. The peripheral flange preferably lies against the inflow openings. The inflow openings of the adapter will hereby lie as close to the grating as possible.
  • In yet another embodiment of the adapter according to the invention the inflow openings are distributed uniformly over the periphery of the tubular housing. Hereby, the adapter can be placed into the insertion opening in any position and the inflow openings will always be positioned optimally relative to the balcony drain and the slope.
  • In yet another embodiment of the adapter according to the invention the connecting piece is an adhesive sleeve. The standpipe can thereby be coupled to the adapter in reliable manner, and no leakage can occur at the transition between the standpipe and the adapter.
  • The funnel is preferably formed by a pipe with a radially outward protruding flange at one end. The outward protruding flange then forms the funnel-like part, while the pipe forms the neck of the funnel. The flange can be provided here with some degree of slope toward the pipe.
  • The invention further relates to
a combination of an adapter according to the invention and a balcony drain, which balcony drain comprises a housing with an inlet opening and an outlet opening, wherein a grating is arranged in the inlet opening, wherein provided in the grating is an insertion opening for a standpipe for coupling to a balcony drain of a higher-lying balcony, wherein the adapter is placed with the other end of the tubular housing into the insertion opening.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the combination the grating is annular and the insertion opening is formed by the central opening of the annular form.
  • In a further preferred embodiment of the combination according to the invention the insertion opening and outlet opening of the balcony drain are arranged coaxially. Balconies lying one above the other can hereby be connected to each other in simple manner with standpipes.
  • These and other features of the invention are further elucidated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
    • Figure 1 shows a top view of a balcony drain according to the prior art.
    • Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the balcony drain according to figure 1.
    • Figure 3 shows a perspective view with partially cut-away parts of an embodiment of the adapter according to the invention.
    • Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the adapter according to figure 3 arranged in a balcony drain according to figure 1.
    • Figure 5 shows a cross-section of the combination according to figure 4.
  • Figures 1 and 2 show a balcony drain 1 according to the prior art. The balcony drain 1 has a housing 2 with an inlet opening 3, in which a grating 4 is arranged, and an outlet opening 5.
  • The grating 4 is annular with a central insertion opening, into which protrudes a standpipe 6. This standpipe 6 is for instance connected to the outlet opening of a balcony drain on a higher-lying balcony.
  • Figure 3 shows a perspective view with partially cut-away parts of an embodiment 10 of an adapter according to the invention. The adapter 10 has a tubular housing 11 having at a first end 12 a connecting piece for connecting to a standpipe. The other end 13 of the tubular housing 11 has a cross-section which corresponds with the insertion opening of the grating 4 of the balcony drain 1.
  • Arranged in the wall of tubular housing 11 are inflow openings 14, so that water can flow via these inflow openings 14 into the tubular housing 11. Provided between inflow openings 14 and the other end 13 is a peripheral flange 15.
  • A funnel with a funnel-like part 16 and a neck 17 is arranged in the tubular housing 11. The peripheral edge 18 of the funnel-like part 16 lies against the inner wall of the tubular housing 11. Water flowing via first end 12 into adapter 10 is thus caught by the funnel 16, 17 and guided along the inflow openings 14.
  • Figures 4 and 5 show the adapter 10 inserted into the insertion opening of the grating 4 of a balcony drain 1, as shown in figures 1 and 2.
  • A standpipe 6 is arranged in the connecting piece at the first end 12 of the tubular housing 11 of adapter 10. This connection can for instance be a glued connection.
  • The peripheral flange 15 ensures that the adapter 10 is inserted into the grating 4 of balcony drain 1 to a suitable depth. This increases the discharge capacity in that water can flow away from a balcony not only via the grating 4 but also via the inflow openings 14 in the tubular housing 11 of adapter 10.
