Abstract

The present application describes discloses a computer implemented system and method, supported by a front-end application, that promotes psychological and sexual well-being and health of prostate cancer patient survivors. The computer implemented system and method helps promoting psychological and sexual well-being and health of prostate cancer patient survivors comprises a front-end application; and a set of modules; wherein the front-end application enables the patient to perform an intervention programme based on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy based on data stored on the set of modules.

Description

    COMPUTER IMPLEMENTED SYSTEM AND METHOD
  • The present application describes a computer implemented method, supported by a front-end application, that promotes psychological and sexual well-being and health of prostate cancer patient survivors.
  • E-Health interventions offer the opportunity to respond to unmet psychological and sexual health care needs [1][2] and are considered an innovative way to support Prostate Cancer survivors' sexual and mental health as well as quality of life [1]. Defined as information and communication technologies in the field of health care [2][3], they are convenient means of providing mental health assistance by overcoming barriers associated with traditional therapy approaches (e.g., time constraints, transportation difficulties, travel costs, geographical isolation, fear of stigmatization), given their high accessibility and private nature [4].
  • E-Health interventions based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) models have demonstrated feasibility and efficacy in cancer-related difficulties [5][6][7] by reformulating maladaptive cognitions that influence behavior and emotions [6].
  • Although there are a few available Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-based e-health interventions for Prostate Cancer survivors’ mental and sexual health [1][2], they do not consider recent research suggesting the inclusion of mindfulness strategies to stimulate acceptance-based coping mechanisms [3].
  • Contrary to these previous interventions, the currently disclosed invention takes these recent recommendations into account and provides a solution to its implementation.
  • The mindfulness technique herein disclosed has been successfully integrated into CBT approaches and is implementable in e-Health format while also playing an important role in cancer patients’ mental and sexual health.
  • The present invention describes a computer-implemented system for promoting psychological and sexual well-being and health of prostate cancer patient survivors comprising a front-end application; and a set of modules; wherein the front-end application enables the patient to perform an intervention programme based on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy based on data stored on the set of modules.
  • The present invention also describes a computer-implemented method for interacting with the front-end application of the computer-implemented system, characterized by being implemented over a computer network and executed by a remote administrator computer, and wherein the set of modules comprise at least in one of the following for embodiment of present invention, namely, a component module with five intervention modules, a mood tracker module, a SOS module, an exercises library module, and an exercises history module.
  • In a proposed embodiment of present invention, the component module comprises at least psychoeducational texts, images, and videos, and psychotherapeutic exercises related to the psychoeducational content.
  • Yet in another proposed embodiment of present invention, the mood tracker module comprises a predefined scale of five moods which are visually represented through graphic facial expressions by the front-end application.
  • Yet in another proposed embodiment of present invention, the SOS module enables the front-end application to disclose an SOS button that enables two recorded audio exercises to help the patient in emotionally overwhelming situations.
  • Yet in another proposed embodiment of present invention, the exercises library module comprises data related with the completion of each module of the previously mentioned modules.
  • Yet in another proposed embodiment of present invention, the exercises history module is configured to enable the patient to save their responses to interactive exercises.
  • The favourites module is configured to enable the patient to bookmark and easily access their favourite component module sections.
  • The present invention also discloses a data processing system, characterized by comprising the physical means necessary for the execution of the computer-implemented system and computer-implemented method.
  • The present invention also discloses a computer program, characterized by comprising programming code or instructions suitable for carrying out the computer-implemented system and the computer-implemented method indicated in preceding claims, in which said computer program is stored, and is executed in a data processing system, remote or in-site, for example a server, performing the previously described steps.
  • The present invention also discloses a computer readable physical data storage device, in which the programming code or instructions of the computer program are stored.
  • The present invention discloses a computer implemented method, supported by a front-end application, that promotes psychological and sexual well-being and quality of life of prostate cancer patient survivors.
  • The disclosed computer implemented method provides to a user, by means of the use of the front-end application, an intervention programme based on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy. Through the user contact with the front-end application, and the therapeutic methods used through the steps performed in the computer implemented method, will lead the user to access therapeutic strategies to better cope with unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behaviours stemming from their experiences with the disease and its impact on their daily and sexual life.
  • This feature is explored and enabled by five modules comprised in the computer implemented method that offer evidence-based information and practical exercises.
  • Additionally, through the front-end application, the computer implemented method provides a mood tracker through which the user can register their emotions.
  • Lastly, the computer implemented method includes an SOS button that provides quick access to grounding and breathing techniques used in psychological emergencies, which are also useful during overwhelming psychological experiences, e.g., panic attacks.
  • With reference to the figures, some embodiments are now described in more detail, which are however not intended to limit the scope of the present application.
  • The present invention discloses a computer implemented method, supported by a front-end application, that promotes psychological and sexual well-being and quality of life of prostate cancer patient survivors. To access the computer implemented method, the user uses credentials to submit through the front-end application, being then allowed to access the modules of the invention.
  • Each of said modules is comprised of sections and subsections. The sections comprise mandatory content and the subsections comprise optional content depending on the treatment and its evolution.
  • The user is then invited to complete a set of therapeutic exercises and, after completing all the stages of the sections and subsections of the first module, i.e., the component module, the front-end application, by means of the computer implemented method, enables the user to access to the second module, i.e., the mood tracker module, and to a library containing exercises of the second module. After completing the second module, the therein associated exercises are added to the library module, and so on until the third and last module is completed, i.e., the SOS module.
  • Each of the previously mentioned modules provide the user of the application with psychoeducational material and exercises on its specific topic, i.e., text, images, videos, and useful resources.
  • These exercises are related with psychoeducational material and are based on CBT and Mindfulness, comprising, for example, reframing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, audio mindfulness exercises, etc. The Users’ responses to each exercise provided by the front-end application are saved on an exercises history module which can be consulted anytime.
  • The mood tracker module can be filled in each time the participant opens the front-end application and, through time, it provides an overview of the frequency of the selected moods of the users through a historical visual representation.
  • The SOS module includes a grounding exercise and a breathing exercise which can be accessed and repeated anytime.
  • The developed front-end application, which might be accessed by any adequate technical means, like a laptop, smartphone Android or iOS, tablet or other technically adequate.
  • The herein disclosed computer implemented method comprises five intervention modules (component module) in addition to a mood tracker module, a SOS module, an exercises library module, and an exercises history module.
  • The component module comprises psychoeducational texts, images, and videos, as well as psychotherapeutic exercises related to the psychoeducational content. The information contained within these modules can be accessed through a specific menu or through the home page of a front-end application particularly developed for the present invention. A progress percentage is displayed.
  • The mood tracker module comprises a predefined scale of five moods which are visually represented through graphic facial expressions by the front-end application. The moods range from “very well” to “very bad”. After selecting one of the existing moods, the user of the application has access to a list of more specific scales to modulate according to their emotional state. These scales present the name of emotions.
  • The SOS module enables the front-end application to disclose an SOS button that enables two recorded audio exercises to help the user in emotionally overwhelming situations. Users can quit the exercise or repeat it.
  • The exercises library module comprises data related with the completion of each module of the previously mentioned modules, i.e., the component module, the mood tracker module and the SOS module. The Exercises’ Library module is updated with the corresponding exercises. After they become available, users can practice them anytime through the front-end application.
  • The exercises history module is configured to enable the health professionals to save patient responses to interactive exercises (i.e., writing, selecting) to the Exercises’ History. This history can be accessed anytime, allowing the reviewing of the patients’ replies.
  • The herein proposed method for psychological and sexual well-being and quality of life of prostate cancer patient survivors, in one of the proposed embodiments of the invention, may be implemented using one or more processing units, one or more processing devices, any means for processing, such as a processor, a computer or a programmable hardware component being operable with accordingly adapted software. In other words, the herein described method is then executed on one or more programmable hardware components. Such hardware components may comprise a general-purpose processor, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), a micro-controller, etc.

Claims (10)

  1. Computer-implemented system for promoting psychological and sexual well-being and quality of life of prostate cancer patient survivors comprising
    a front-end application; and
    a set of modules;
    wherein the front-end application enables the patient to perform an intervention programme based on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy based on data stored on the set of modules.
  2. Computer-implemented method for interacting with the front-end application of the computer-implemented system of the previous claim 1, characterized by being implemented over a computer network and executed by a remote administrator computer, and wherein the set of modules comprise at least a component module with five intervention modules, a mood tracker module, a SOS module, an exercises library module, and an exercises history module.
  3. Computer-implemented method according to the previous claim, wherein the component module comprises at least psychoeducational texts, images, and videos, and psychotherapeutic exercises related to the psychoeducational content.
  4. Computer-implemented method according to the previous claim, wherein the mood tracker module comprises a predefined scale of five moods which are visually represented through graphic facial expressions by the front-end application.
  5. Computer-implemented method according to the previous claim, wherein the SOS module enables the front-end application to disclose an SOS button that enables two recorded audio exercises to help the patient in emotionally overwhelming situations.
  6. Computer-implemented method according to the previous claim, wherein the exercises library module comprises data related with the completion of each module of the previously mentioned modules.
  7. Computer-implemented method according to the previous claim, wherein the exercises history module is configured to enable the patient to save their responses to interactive exercises.
  8. Data processing system, characterized by comprising the physical means necessary for the execution of the computer- implemented system and computer-implemented method described in any one of the preceding claims.
  9. Computer program, characterized by comprising programming code or instructions suitable for carrying out the computer-implemented system and the computer-implemented method indicated in preceding claims, in which said computer program is stored, and is executed in a data processing system, remote or in-site, for example a server, performing the respective steps described in the claims.
  10. Computer readable physical data storage device, in which the programming code or instructions of the computer program are stored.
