Abstract

The present disclosure relates to cleanser compositions, which generally include a. salicylic acid; b. a first surfactant sodium cocoyl isethionate; c.at least one acrylate copolymer; d. a water insoluble ingredient. The cleanser compositions contain a high level of salicylic acid and exhibits very good cleansing properties as well as being stable.

CLEANSING COMPOSITION
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application claims benefit of U.S. Non Provisional Application No. 18/305,689, filed Jun 24, 2023 and French Patent Application No. 2305623, filed June 05, 2023, which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.
FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0002] The present disclosure relates to a cleanser composition. More particularly, the disclosure relates to a cleanser composition comprising a high level of salicylic acid.
BACKGROUND
[0003] Salicylic acid is proven to be effective to address skin conditions that include mild to moderate acne. Products with high concentrations of salicylic acid offer opportunity for addressing acne, however, such compositions can prove challenging. Not only are there practical limits on the amount of salicylic acid that can be included in consumer applied compositions, but there are also limits on formulating cleansers that are shelf stable and offer a pleasing comfortable experience for consumers.
[0004] The inventors have overcome these challenges and provide a cleansing composition that remains stable over time at ambient temperatures and resists freeze/thaw cycles wherein the stability is demonstrated in minimal change in pH and viscosity and visible properties of the cleansing composition.
SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0005] The instant disclosure relates to cleanser compositions with high levels of salicylic acid used for acne treatment. These types of cleanser compositions that contain high level of salicylic acid are difficult to stabilize when attempting to suspend water insoluble materials and maintain viscosity. The disclosure provides, in various embodiments, cleanser compositions that contain high levels of salicylic acid and a water insoluble material capable of being suspended and formulated with only bio-based surfactants, free of petroleum derived surfactants such as sulfated or sulfonated types. The viscosity is maintained through stability lifetime.
[0006] The instant disclosure relates to cleanser compositions that include: a. salicylic acid; b. a first surfactant sodium cocoyl isethionate; c. at least one one acrylate copolymer; d. a water insoluble ingredient; and wherein the cleanser is stable and the water insoluble ingredient stays in suspension; and wherein all weight percentages are based on a total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0007] In some embodiments, the salicylic acid may be present from about 0.5 to 2 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0008] In various embodiments, the sodium cocoyl isethionate may be present from about 0.5 to 10 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0009] In some embodiments, the at least one one acrylate copolymer may be present from about 0.1 to 4 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0010] In some embodiments, the water insoluble ingredient may be present from about 0.05 to about 10 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0011] In various embodiments, the water insoluble ingredient is selected from the group consisting of hectorite, clay, pearlescent, exfoliants and mixture thereof.
[0012] In some embodiments, the cleanser compositions may further include a second or more surfactants. In some embodiments, the second or more surfactants may be selected from the group consisting of anionic, ionic, amphoteric surfactants and mixture thereof.
[0013] In some embodiments, the second or more surfactants may be present from about 0.5 to about 20 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
[0014] In some embodiments, the composition is directed to a cleanser comprising: a. from about 0.5 to 2 wt.% of salicylic acid; b. from about 0.5 to 10 wt.% of a first surfactant sodium cocoyl isethionate; c. from about 0.1 to 4 wt.% of at least one acrylate copolymer ; d. from about 0.05 to about 10 wt.% of a water insoluble ingredient; and wherein the cleanser is stable and the water insoluble ingredient stays in suspension; and wherein all weight percentages are based on a total weight of the cleanser composition.

[0019] Without being bound by theory or mechanism, it is suggested that the ratio between salicylic acid, sodium cocoyl isethionate and one acrylate copolymer help the water insoluble material to stay suspended.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0023] As used herein, the term “essentially sulfate free” means that, while it is preferable that no sulfate is present in the compositions of the invention, it is possible to have very small amounts of sulfate in the compositions, provided that these amounts do not materially affect the advantageous properties of the composition. In particular, “essentially sulfate-free anionic surfactant” means that no traditional sulfate-based anionic surfactants are used in the composition and that the surfactant does not contribute sulfate to the composition. Most preferably, the compositions contain no sulfate. To the extent any sulfate is present in the compositions, it is present at an amount of less than about 2.0% by weight, typically less than about 1 .5% by weight, typically less than about 1 .0% by weight, typically less than about 0.5% by weight, more typically less than about 0.1 % by weight, based on the total weight of the composition. To the extent present, the sulfates in such compositions are typically contributed by components other than the anionic surfactant.

[0025] In accordance with the various embodiments, the cleaner composition according to the disclosure comprises salicylic acid.
[0026] Salicylic acid (from Latin salix, willow tree) is a lipophilic monohydroxybenzoic acid, a type of phenolic acid, and a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). It has the formula C7H6O3. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone.
[0027] In accordance with the various embodiments, the amount of salicylic acid present in the cleaner composition is in a range from about 0.5 to about 2 wt.%, or from 0.55 to about 1.95 wt.%, or from about 0.6 to about 1 .9 wt.%, or from about 0.65 to about 1 .85 wt.%, or from about 0.7 to about 1 .8 wt.%, or from about 0.75 to about 1.85 wt.%, or from about 0.8 to about 1.8 wt.%, or from about 0.85 wt.% to about 1.75 wt.%, or from about 0.9 to about 1.70 wt.%, or from about 0.95 to about 1.65 wt.% or any suitable combination, sub-combination, range, or sub-range thereof by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

Two or more zwitterionic surfactants may be used in combination. Thus, a single type of zwitterionic surfactant or a combination of different types of zwitterionic surfactants may be used.

[00126] Cleansers with high levels of salicylic acid are difficult to stabilize when attempting to suspend water insoluble materials and maintain viscosity. The instant disclosure described that the association of Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate with the acrylate copolymer allowed for the water insoluble material to stay in suspension while maintaining the high level of salicylic acid within a pH range of 5-7
[00127] To evaluate the stabilization of the cleansers, experiments were conducted on several formulas with different levels of Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate as well as different level of Acrylate copolymer and different level of Hectorite.

[00131] The comparison between the Inventive Example 1 and the Comparative Examples allowed to show that the presence of the sodium cocoyl isethionate, the acrylate copolymer and the hectorite need to be within a certain ranges in order to have stable compositions.

Claims

CLAIMS What is claimed is:
1 . A cleanser composition comprising: a. salicylic acid; b. a first surfactant sodium cocoyl isethionate; c. at least one acrylate copolymer; d. a water insoluble ingredient; and wherein the cleanser is stable and the water insoluble ingredient stays in suspension; and wherein all weight percentages are based on a total weight of the cleanser composition.
2. The cleanser composition of claim 1 , wherein salicylic acid is present from about 0.5 to 2 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
3. The cleanser composition of claim 1 , wherein the sodium cocoyl isethionate is present from about 0.5 to 10 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
4. The cleanser composition of any one of claims 1 -3, wherein the at least one acrylate copolymer is selected from crosslinked copolymers containing at least one monomer selected from methacrylic acid; acrylic acid; amino acrylic acid; an acrylic acid ester of a C8-C30 alkyl or alkenyl, which may be substituted; a methacrylic acid ester of a C8-C30 alkyl or alkenyl, which may be substituted; a C1-C4 alkyl acrylate and a C1-C4 methacrylate, which may be substituted.
5. The cleanser composition of claim 4, wherein the at least one the acrylates copolymer is selected from crosslinked copolymers comprising at least one methacrylic acid unit and at least one C1-C4 alkyl acrylate unit.
6. The cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one acrylate copolymer is present from about 0.1 to 4 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
7. The cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the water insoluble ingredient is present from about 0.05 to about 10 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
8. The cleanser composition of claim 7, wherein the water insoluble ingredient is selected from the group consisting of hectorite, clay, pearlescent, exfoliant and mixture thereof.
9. The cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a second or more surfactants; wherein the second or more surfactants is selected from the group consisting of anionic, ionic, amphoteric surfactants and mixture thereof.
10. The cleanser composition of claim 9, wherein the second or more surfactants are present from about 0.5 to about 20 wt.% based on the total weight of the cleanser composition.
11 . The cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims having a pH of about 5 to about 7.
12. A cleanser composition comprising: a. from about 0.5 to 2 wt.% of salicylic acid; b. from about 0.5 to 10 wt.% of a first surfactant sodium cocoyl isethionate; c. from about 0.1 to 4 wt.% of at least one acrylate copolymer; d. from about 0.05 to about 10 wt.% of a water insoluble ingredient; and wherein the cleanser is stable and the water insoluble ingredient stays in suspension; and wherein all weight percentages are based on a total weight of the cleanser composition.
13. The cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising one or more adjuvants commonly used in the cosmetic field selected from the group consisting of cosmetic or dermatological active principles, fragrances, preservatives, sequestering agents, pigments, pearlescent agents, inorganic or organic fillers, powder or polyethylene powder, soluble dyes, sunscreen agents and their mixtures.
14. A method for cleansing the keratin materials, preferably the skin, more preferably the face, comprising a step of applying the cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims to said keratin materials.
15. Use of the cleanser composition of any one of the preceding claims in cleansing the keratin material, preferably the skin, more preferably the face.
