PACKAGING LID HAVING A RECESS TO ACCOMMODATE AN ACCESSORY ENCLOSURE
BACKGROUND
[0001] When a consumer purchases a packaged product, various accessories can be included in the packaging. For example, when a consumer purchases a new smartphone, the packaging can include a charging cable, a subscriber identifier module (SIM) card tray ejection tool, documentation, or some combination thereof. Having packaging that efficiently stores such accessories can be beneficial for multiple reasons, including making the packaging as small as possible (while still protecting the contents) and providing the consumer with a convenient place to store accessories for lengthy periods of time, such as until the smartphone is resold.

The system may comprise a lid comprising an outer surface and an inner surface. The inner surface may define a recess and a plurality of slots located within the recess. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0017] Embodiments detailed herein are focused on an accessory enclosure that is removable and re-attachable to an inside of packaging. In some embodiments, the accessory enclosure is used to store documents, such as warranty information, instructions, or both. In other embodiments, the accessory enclosure can be used to store other components, such as charging cables, a SIM card tray ejection tool, or any other form of accessory relevant to the product housed in the packaging. In the embodiments detailed herein, a focus is provided on packaging used to house a smartphone; however, embodiments detailed herein can be applied to various other forms of electronic and nonelectronic products which have at least one accessory packaged together with the product.
[0018] The accessory enclosure can be made from a recyclable material, such as entirely from paperboard (allowing for a small amount of adhesive to hold the accessory enclosure together). Using only some number of tabs, the accessory enclosure can be held in place against an inside surface of a packaging lid, which can serve as the cover for a box. The tabs can allow the accessory enclosure to be removed and reinstalled in the inside of the lid multiple times. No adhesive or other form of fastening is used other than the mechanical tabs to hold the accessory enclosure to the inside surface of the lid. The mechanical strength of the tabs holding the accessory enclosure to the inside surface of the lid is sufficient such that the accessory enclosure’s own weight, with the included accessory, does not cause the accessory enclosure to detach from being attached with the inside of the lid.
[0019] Such an arrangement may have particular benefits in regard to certain designs of smartphones, gaming devices, and tablet computers. For example, a rear surface of a smartphone may have a protrusion, such as in which one or more camera lens, lights, and/or sensors are present. This protrusion can result in a space being present in packaging between a lid of the packaging and the body of the smartphone when the smartphone’s display is facing down. To efficiently package the smartphone with its one or more accessories, the accessory enclosure may at least partially fill this space created by the smartphone’s protrusion. By using this space for the accessory enclosure, the overall volume of the packaging can be decreased while having a convenient “unboxing” experience for the consumer and a place to store the one or more accessories long-term.
[0020] In the case of the accessory enclosure being used for documents, such documents may tend to be examined once or infrequently by consumers. An accessory enclosure that allows for a consumer to remove the accessory enclosure, review the documentation, and then reattach the accessory enclosure to the packaging to store the documentation is beneficial.
[0021] An additional benefit can be recyclability. Having the accessory enclosure and the lid entirely made of recyclable materials (allowing for a small amount of ink and/or adhesive), such as paper and paperboard, can allow a consumer to easily recycle the entirety of the packaging or at least the lid and the accessory enclosure.
[0022] Further detail regarding such embodiments is provided in relation to the figures. FIG. 1 illustrates an isometric view of an embodiment 100 of an accessory enclosure 120 attached with packaging lid 110. Packaging lid 110 is illustrated inverted. As such, inner surface 130 is visible. Inner surface 130 can be made from multiple layers of paper board. One or more recesses can be defined on inner surface 130 by removing one or more layers of material, such as paperboard or cardboard. As shown in FIG. 1, two recesses may be present: recess 140 and recess 150. In FIG. 1, recess 140 is empty. Recess 140 may be used to store a component or portion of a component. For example, an electronic device, such as a smartphone, may have a protrusion, such as a camera lens unit, that protrudes from the smartphone. When inserted into packaging lid 110, recess 140 may house the camera lens unit. The specific sizes and shapes of recesses 140 and 150 can be determined based upon the devices and accessories to be housed. While recess 140 is shown to have semi-circular ends, in other embodiments, recess 140 can be another shape, such as rectangular, square, or oval. In other embodiments, a single recess may be present or more than two recesses may be present.
[0023] In FIG. 1, accessory enclosure 120 is present and removably attached with packaging lid 110. A user may remove and reinstall accessory enclosure 120 within packaging lid 110 multiple times. When installed in packaging lid 110, accessory enclosure 120 may fill recess 150 such that a top surface of accessory enclosure 120 is on a plane with a top surface of inner surface 130. When accessory enclosure 120 is present in recess 130, a back surface of accessory enclosure 120 can be directly adjacent and touching an inner surface 130 of packaging lid 110.
[0024] Accessory enclosure 120 may be made of a single material, such as paperboard. A single piece of paperboard may be cut and folded to form accessory enclosure 120. A small amount of adhesive may be used to hold accessory enclosure 120 together, as detailed in relation to FIG. 7. Accessory enclosure 120 can be used to store various accessories, such as papers, stickers, documents, a SIM track ejection tool, a cable, or any other item that is to be packaged within packaging lid 110.
[0025] Packaging lid 110 removably attaches with another piece of packaging, such as a box (which does not have a lid). Packaging lid 110 can slide over four walls of a box such that accessory enclosure 120 is inverted from the position of FIG. 1 when the box is upright. Accessory enclosure 120 includes one or more tabs that removably attach accessory enclosure 120 with packaging lid 110. The one or more tabs can provide sufficient force that, when attached with packaging lid 110, accessory enclosure 120 and its contents do not separate from packaging lid 110, even when packaging lid 110 is inverted from the position illustrated in FIG. 1.
[0026] While accessory enclosure 120 is shown as attached with packaging lid 110, in other embodiments, accessory enclosure 120 can be attached with another portion of the packaging, such as an inner surface of the box. In such embodiments, the tabs can help hold accessory enclosure 120 in place at the bottom of the box. Similarly, embodiments are possible in which accessory enclosure 120 is removably attached with an inside surface of the box or an inside surface of packaging lid 110. Embodiments are also possible where accessory enclosure 120 is attached in a recess of an outside surface of packaging lid 110 or a box. An additional security mechanism may be present in such embodiments to prevent removal of accessory enclosure 120 until after purchase.
[0027] FIG. 2 illustrates a bottom view of an accessory enclosure 200 attached with a packaging lid. As can be seen in FIG. 2, a perimeter of accessory enclosure 120 is immediately adjacent to a sidewall of inner surface 130 that defines recess 150. In order to remove accessory enclosure 120, a user may insert a finger into cutout region 210 to help the user to pull accessory enclosure 120 away from packaging lid 110. Cutout region 210 may be present on only a first side of accessory enclosure 120 or may be present on both a top and bottom side of accessory enclosure 120. Cutout region 210 may also allow the contents, if any, of accessory enclosure 120 to be partially viewed without detaching accessory enclosure 120 from packaging lid 110. As such, a user may determine where documents are stored without removing accessory enclosure 120 to inspect the content. FIG.
2 further defines the location of multiple cross section views. Cross section 300 is detailed in relation to FIG. 3 and cross section 400 is detailed in relation to FIG. 4.
[0028] FIG. 3 illustrates an embodiment of cross section 300 of an accessory enclosure attached with a packaging lid. In cross section 300, it can be seen that when accessory enclosure 120 is attached with packaging lid 110, surface 121 of accessory enclosure 120 can be in a same plane (or approximately the same plane) as surface 131 of inner surface 130. As such, accessory enclosure 120 appears flush with inner surface 130. In other embodiments, the shape and size of accessory enclosure 120 can allow for a surface of the accessory enclosure to be above or below the plane of surface 131. For example, accessory enclosure 120 can be made thinner, such that a surface of accessory enclosure is below the plane of surface 131. As another example, accessory enclosure 120 can be made thicker (e.g., to accommodate a larger accessory), such that a surface of accessory enclosure is above the plane of surface 131.

Tabs 320 can be made of the same material and formed for a same piece of material as accessory enclosure 120, such as paperboard. Slots 310 are formed by gaps in inner surface 130 of packaging lid 110. For example, if inner surface 130 of packaging lid 110 is formed from multiple layers of paperboard, one or more layers of paperboard may include a cutout that forms slots 310. Tabs 320 of accessory enclosure 120 are sized and shaped to fit within slots 310. When a user pulls accessory enclosure 120 away from inner surface 130, tabs 320 bend or otherwise temporarily deform until accessory enclosure 120 is pulled out of recess 150. When reinserted, tabs 320 again bend or otherwise temporarily deform until accessory enclosure 120 is fully inserted into recess 150 with the tabs returning to their undeformed positions within slots 310.
[0030] When removed and reinserted, each tab snapping back from a deformed position to an undeformed position can create a sound, such as a snap or pop, that triggers a user to know that accessory enclosure 120 has been either removed or reinstalled.
[0031] FIG. 4 illustrates an embodiment of a cross section of an accessory enclosure attached with a packaging lid. In FIG. 4, tab 320-1 can be seen inserted in slot 310-1. Also visible in FIG. 4 is recess 140. Recess 140 and recess 150 are in a same plane. Therefore, for example, if recess 140 is used to store a protrusion of a smartphone, recess 150 can be used to store an accessory of the smartphone without increasing the total thickness of packaging needed to house the smartphone. Portion 410 of inner surface 130 can separate and help define recess 140 and recess 150.
[0032] FIG. 5 illustrates an angled view of an embodiment 500 of a packaging lid without an accessory enclosure attached. In FIG. 5, slot 310-1, which is configured to receive tab 320-1, is visible. The number and size of slots can be varied by embodiment, such as based on the amount of weight that needs to be supported in the installed accessory enclosure. One or multiple slots can be present on sidewall 510. In some embodiments, a slot is defined on three or all four sides of sidewall 510. For example, a slot may be present on each side of sidewall 510 except where cutout region 210 (as seen in FIG. 2) is present. The depth of recess 140 and recess 150 may be the same or may vary. By having the depths to be at least relatively the same, space created in packaging due to a smartphone (or other device) protrusion that might otherwise be wasted space can instead be used by accessory enclosure 120, thus reducing or eliminating the need to make the overall packaging larger to store one or more accessories.
[0033] FIG. 6 illustrates an isometric view of an embodiment 600 of an accessory enclosure 120. Visible in FIG. 6 is tab 320-2. In this embodiment, two tabs are present on opposite sides of accessory enclosure 120. When tabs 320 snap back into position from being deformed, an auditory snapping noise can be made by each of tabs 320. This noise is loud enough to be heard by a user. The auditory properties of the sound can be controlled by the material properties (e.g., of the paperboard used to form accessory enclosure 120) and the size and shape of each tab.
[0034] Visible in FIG. 6 is cutout region 210, into which a user may press a finger in order to grip and remove accessory enclosure 120 from packaging lid 110. As shown in FIG. 6, documents 610 are present in accessory enclosure 120. Such documents can contain any information pertinent to the product stored in the packaging, such as instructions, warranty information, warnings, installation instructions, advertisements, legal disclosures, an end user license agreement, etc.
[0035] FIG. 7 illustrates a top view of an embodiment of an unassembled accessory enclosure 700. Unassembled accessory enclosure 700 can be cut from a single piece of material, such as paperboard. Present are tabs 320, which can each extend between 1 mm and 4 mm from body 710 of unassembled accessory enclosure 700. In some embodiments, tabs 320 each extend between 1.5 and 1.8 mm from body 710 of unassembled accessory enclosure 700. Adhesive 730, such as double-sided tape or double-sided adhesive can be applied to extensions 720 (720-1, 720-2), which may be folded onto body 710. In some embodiments, cutout region 210 is defined on both sides of body 710. In other embodiments, cutout region 210 is defined on only a side of body 710 that will be accessible by a user when unassembled accessory enclosure 700 is assembled and installed in packaging lid 110.
[0036] FIG. 8 illustrates an embodiment of smartphone packaging 800 that incorporates an accessory enclosure that removably attaches with a packaging lid. While the illustrated embodiment of FIG. 8 is focused on a smartphone, other forms of devices and media can be packaged similarly. Variations in the packaging can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention detailed herein. For example, a device that does not include charging cable 830 may omit tray 840 (in addition to charging cable 830 itself). Smartphone packaging 800 can include: sleeve 810; packaging lid 110; accessory enclosure 120; smartphone 820; charging cable 830; tray 840; and box 850.
[0037] Sleeve 810, which is optional, can slide over packaging lid 110 and box 850 while packaging lid 110 and box 850 are mated together. Sleeve 810 can serve to help keep packaging lid 110 from coming detached from box 850. In other embodiments, sleeve 810 may not be present. For example, an adhesive or sticker may be used to removably attach packaging lid 110 to box 850.

Sleeve 810 may then be installed and a tamper-evident adhesive or sticker may be attached to sleeve 810 such that a consumer can detect if the packaging has been opened.
[0040] Various methods may be performed using the devices and systems detailed in relation to FIGS. 1-8. FIG. 9 illustrates an embodiment of a method 900 for creating an accessory enclosure. The accessory enclosure that is created using method 900 can be an embodiment of accessory enclosure 120 as detailed in relation to FIGS. 1-8. [0041] At block 910, a cutout of an accessory enclosure can be cut from a material, such as paperboard or paper. The accessory enclosure cutout can be cut as a single piece of material. Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A packaging lid system, comprising: a lid comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein the inner surface defines a recess and a plurality of slots located within the recess; and an accessory enclosure comprising a plurality of tabs, wherein: each tab of the plurality of tabs is configured to be inserted into a corresponding slot of the plurality of slots; the accessory enclosure is adjacent the inner surface of the lid when the plurality of tabs is inserted within the plurality of slots; and the plurality of tabs deform such that the accessory enclosure can be removed from the recess of the lid and reattached in the recess of the lid.
2. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein the accessory enclosure defines a cutout region used for removal of the accessory enclosure from the recess of the inner surface of the lid.
3. The packaging lid system of claim 2, wherein, other than the cutout region, a perimeter of the accessory enclosure is adjacent to a sidewall of the inner surface, wherein the sidewall defines the recess.
4. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein the accessory enclosure, including the plurality of tabs, is formed from a single piece of material.
5. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein a surface of the accessory enclosure is in a same plane as the inner surface of the packaging lid.
6. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein a second recess defined by the inner surface of the lid, in a plane of the recess, is configured to house a protrusion of a smartphone.
7. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein, when the accessory enclosure is installed in the recess, the plurality of tabs support a weight of the accessory enclosure and contents of the accessory enclosure such that the accessory enclosure does not detach from the lid.
8. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein the accessory enclosure is a document folder.
9. The packaging lid system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of slots and the recess are defined by a plurality of layers of paperboard.
10. A device packaging system, comprising: a box configured to removably mate with a lid; the lid comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein the inner surface defines a recess and a plurality of slots located within the recess; and an accessory enclosure comprising a plurality of tabs, wherein: each tab of the plurality of tabs is configured to be inserted into a corresponding slot of the plurality of slots; the accessory enclosure is adjacent the inner surface of the lid when the plurality of tabs is inserted within the plurality of slots; and the plurality of tabs deform such that the accessory enclosure can be removed from the recess of the lid and reattached in the recess of the lid.
11. The device packaging system of claim 10, further comprising a sleeve, which, when installed on the box and the lid, prevents the lid from being removed from the box.
12. The device packaging system of claim 10, further comprising a smartphone, wherein the smartphone comprises a protrusion in which one or more camera lens are present and the smartphone is oriented in the box such that the protrusion is adjacent the inner surface of the lid.
13. The device packaging system of claim 12, wherein a second recess defined by the inner surface of the lid, in a plane of the recess, is configured to house the protrusion of the smartphone.
14. The device packaging system of claim 10, wherein the accessory enclosure, including the plurality of tabs, is formed from a single piece of material.
15. The device packaging system of claim 14, wherein the accessory enclosure is paperboard.
16. The device packaging system of claim 10, wherein the accessory enclosure defines a cutout region used for removal of the accessory enclosure from the recess of the inner surface of the lid.
17. The device packaging system of claim 16, wherein, other than the cutout region, a perimeter of the accessory enclosure is adjacent to a sidewall of the inner surface, wherein the sidewall defines the recess.
18. The device packaging system of claim 10, further comprising an accessory tray, wherein the accessory tray is present on an opposite side of a device from the accessory enclosure.
19. The device packaging system of claim 10, wherein the accessory enclosure is a document folder.
20. The device packaging system of claim 10, wherein the plurality of slots and the recess are formed from a plurality of layers of paperboard.
