Description

A system for the laser beam welding of galvanic cells in the process of production of a battery module
The invention concerns a system for the laser beam welding of galvanic cells in the process of production of a battery module. In particular, the invention concerns a set for pressing the welded components together, a set for positioning the said pressing set with respect to the welded galvanic cells, and a system for laser welding of the components to one another in the area where they are pressed so as to enable production of electric battery modules in an effective and infallible way.
Known in the prior art is the connection (serial or parallel) of galvanic cells to one another so as to produce an electric battery module.
Galvanic cell electrodes with a contact element are typically connected using localised welds, in particular spots weld or linear welds, which can be made using resistance welding, arc welding, or ultrasound welding, and preferably contactless laser welding.
For example, known is the directing (focusing in particular) of a laser beam with an arm of a welding robot to the areas of the connected electrical connectors. It is also known that in order to obtain a good quality connection, the components connected together with a laser beam must be pressed together in the process of their connection. The pressing of components in the area of their connection may be performed for example by using a single point-pressing element. The solution is characterised by high flexibility, but not necessarily by high production efficiency.
Another known method of pressing the contact element which conducts electric current to galvanic cell electrodes in the process of their connection consists in the pressing of the said contact element simultaneously in all areas intended for welding (in the area of all cells of the battery module) using the so- called pressing mask. The solution is constrained by the need to use unique masks for different products which limits the flexibility of the solution. The use of a mask makes it possible to shorten the time necessary to make all welds over the entire area of an electric battery module.
Known from the patent document US 2013/0183574 Al is a battery system which includes battery cells, metal plates, and welding rings. The battery cell includes terminal rods. The battery cells are connected to each other through the metal plates. The welding rings are arranged on the metal plates, and have insertion holes into which the terminal rods are inserted. The surface of the insertion hole is welded to the terminal rod. The periphery of the welding ring is welded to the metal plate after the terminal rod is inserted into the insertion hole. The terminal rods are electrically connected to the metal plates through the welding rings. The terminal rod and/or the welding ring includes a stopper that temporarily holds the welding ring at a predetermined position with the welding ring being connected to the terminal rod. The temporarily held position is the position where the periphery of the welding ring is in contact with the metal plate.
US 2018/0108899 Al and EP 3 526 834 Al patent documents disclose methods of welding a bonding connector of a contact plate to a battery cell terminal. Among other things, it is envisaged to use an oscillating laser to weld the bonding connector to a battery cell terminal over a target area over which the bonding connector makes non- flush contact. In another disclosed embodiment, the bonding connector is flattened to reduce a gap between the bonding connector and the target area on the battery cell terminal, and then laser-welded e.g., using an oscillating or non-oscillating laser. Yet in another embodiment, at least one hold-down mechanism is applied over the bonding connector to secure the bonding connector to the battery cell terminal, after which the bonding connector is laser-welded to the battery cell terminal.
Known from the patent document US 2013/0048615 Al is a laser welding pressure unit which comprises a housing, a rotating element, and a foot. The housing may attach to a laser head. The rotating element may include an outer ring rotatably coupled to an inner ring, wherein the outer ring is coupled to the housing. The foot may couple to the inner ring such that the foot rotates with respect to the housing. The foot may also be configured to contact an upper surface of a metal sheet and may be oriented such that while the metal sheet is being welded, the foot rotates about a central vertical axis and the laser welding pressure unit is able to move in any direction without the foot breaking contact with the surface.
Known from the patent document US 2011/0100963 Al is a device for joining by a laser beam two components along a ring-shaped contact zone jointly formed by the components. The device includes a pressure element, a laser source configured to emit the laser beam, a beam guide unit, a beam guide control unit. The pressure element is connected to the internal clamping chuck via the external axial bearing, the holding wheel and the internal axial bearing so as to transmit to the internal clamping chuck contact pressure exerted on the pressure element.
Known from the patent document US 2004/0016727 Al is a laser beam welding system having a contact pressure device for fixing components to be welded. The contact pressure device contains a contact pressure element which can be moved from an inoperative position into a contact pressure position. The contact pressure element is constructed to be elastically deformable, and the contact pressure device is designed such that, in the contact pressure position, fixing of the components to be welded takes place by way of a force resulting from deformation of the contact pressure element.
The present invention solves the problem of increasing the effectiveness of the galvanic cell welding process in the process of producing electric battery modules, and at the same time guarantees obtaining high quality connections.
The purpose of the present invention is to improve the process of laser welding of galvanic cells of an electric battery module.
The purpose was achieved in particular by developing a refittable (flexible) system for laser welding of electric battery modules, in particular by developing a pressing set which presses the components connected with a laser beam, i.e. pressing the contact element which conducts electric current to the galvanic cell electrode, and by developing a set which positions the pressing set with respect to the welded galvanic cells.

A pressing set of a system for the laser beam welding of galvanic cells in the process of production of a battery module according to the present invention comprises at least two pressing elements for pressing the contact element which conducts electric current to the galvanic cell electrodes in the area of welding with a laser beam, at least one fixing element, movably fitted in which are at least two said pressing elements, and further comprises a device for activating the said pressing elements.
Preferably, the device for activating the pressing elements incorporates pneumatic and/or hydraulic and/or electric elements which activate the pressing elements.
Preferably, the pressing elements mounted on the same fixing element are all connected to the same activating element, or preferably each pressing element mounted on the same fixing element is connected to a separate activating element, or preferably the pressing elements mounted on the same fixing element form groups, where all pressing elements in a single group are connected to the same activating element.
The distance between the pressing elements mounted on the same fixing element can be either fixed or adjustable.
Preferably, each of the pressing elements features a measuring system which measures the distance between the focal point and the pressed contact element. Preferably, the pressing elements are designed for discharging the welding fumes, in particular there are cut-outs in the ends which remain in contact with the contact element.

Preferably, the fixing element of the pressing set is mounted slidingly on the axis.
The fixing element of the pressing set may be mounted either on the movable axis or on the fixed axis.
Preferably, the socket to accommodate the battery module is connected slidingly to one of the axes.
The socket to accommodate the battery module may be connected either to the movable axis or to the fixed axis.
Preferably, used as the said kinematic set is a robot arm.
Moreover, a system for the laser beam welding of galvanic cells in the process of production of a battery module comprises a laser beam source and a laser welding head which is preferably mounted on the kinematic set, where used as the kinematic set may be a robot arm. The solution according to the present invention meets the intended purpose.
The structure of the pressing set and the kinematic set for positioning the pressing set with respect to the welded galvanic cells makes it possible to set the required parameters quickly and to correctly make an electric battery module in a short time.
The invention is presented in its embodiments in figures, where:
Fig. 1 presents a schematic view of the system for laser welding of galvanic cells in the process of producing a battery module, in spatial view;
Fig. 2 shows detail A, as in Fig. 1, in magnification;
Fig. 3 depicts a fixing element of the pressing set with visualised pressing elements connected to separate activating elements 9, with arrows which indicate possible directions in which the pressing elements can move, in bird’s eye view;
Fig. 4 presents a fixing element of the pressing set with visualised pressing elements connected to a single activating element, with arrows which indicate possible directions in which the pressing elements can move, in bird’s eye view; Fig. 5 shows the fixing element of the pressing set, as in Fig. 4, in front view; Fig. 6 depicts the fixing element of the pressing set with visualised pressing elements forming groups, in bird’s eye view.
For example, a system for the laser beam welding of galvanic cells 3 of an electric battery module comprises a pressing set 7 for pressing the contact element 4 which conducts electric current to electrodes of the galvanic cells 3 in the area of welding with a laser beam, a kinematic set for positioning the pressing set with respect to the galvanic cells of the module of batteries placed in a socket, a welding laser head 1 , and a laser beam source.
For example, a pressing set 7 shown on Fig. 1 to Fig. 3 comprises three pressing elements 8 for pressing the contact element 4 which conducts electric current to the electrodes of galvanic cells 3 in the area of welding with a laser beam. The pressing set 7 comprises a single fixing element 10, movably fixed in which are three pressing elements 8, and a device for activating the said pressing elements 8. The device for activating the pressing elements 8 comprises pneumatic and/or hydraulic and/or electric elements 9 which activate the pressing elements 8. In the embodiment shown on Fig. 1 to Fig. 3, the pressing elements 8 are mounted on the same fixing element 10. Each of the pressing elements 8 is connected to a separate activating element 9. The distance between the pressing elements 8 is adjustable, as shown on Fig. 3. Each of the pressing elements is fitted with a measuring set for measuring the distance between the focal point and the pressed contact element 4. There are cut-outs 11 in the ends of the pressing elements 8, as shown on Fig. 2, which enable the discharge of welding fumes.
In another embodiment of the invention, the pressing elements 8 mounted on the same fixing element 10 are all connected to the same activating element 9 and the distance between the pressing elements 8 is fixed, as shown on Fig. 4 and Fig. 5.
In yet another embodiment the pressing elements 8 mounted on the same fixing element 10 form groups 12, where the pressing elements 8 forming a single group are all connected to the same activating element 9, as shown on Fig. 6.
The pressing set 7 may contain more than one fixing element 10.
In all embodiments of the invention, the pressing elements 8 are fitted with a measuring set to measure the distance between the focal point and the pressed contact element 4.
In all embodiments the pressing elements 8 feature cut-outs 11 for the discharge of welding fumes.
In all embodiments the pressing set may be mounted on a robot arm. The pressing set 7 is positioned along a plane parallel to the galvanic cells of the module of batteries placed in the socket 2 with a kinematic positioning set which can for example comprises two axes 5, 6 connected slidingly to each other. Axis 5 is fixed, while axis 6 is movable. Slidingly mounted on the movable axis 6 is a single fixing element 10 of the pressing set 7, as shown on Fig. 1. The fixing element 10 slides along axis 6, and axis 6 moves along axis 5, so that the pressing elements 8 are placed above the contact element 4 in the area of welding with a laser beam, following which the activating element/ activating elements 9 move the pressing element 8 towards the contact element 4 and the pressing elements 8 are pressed to the contact element 4, thanks to which the contact element 4 gets pressed to the galvanic cells 3.
In another embodiment the socket 2 to accommodate the battery module (in which the galvanic cells are placed) is connected slidingly to axis 5. The socket 2 slides along axis 5, and axis 5 slides along axis 6, so that the pressing elements 8 are placed above the contact element in the area of welding with a laser beam, following which the activating element/ activating elements 9 move the pressing elements 8 towards the contact element 4 and the pressing elements 8 are pressed to the contact element 4, thanks to which the contact element 4 gets pressed to the galvanic cells 3.
In all embodiments used as the kinematic set can be a robot arm.
Moreover, the said positioning kinematic set enables simultaneous movement of the pressing set 7 and the socket 2 in order to place the pressing elements 8 above the area of laser welding of the contact element 4 with electrodes of the galvanic cells 3.
Moreover, an illustrative system comprises a laser beam source and a laser head 1 , preferably mounted on the kinematic set, where used as the kinematic set can be a robot arm.
Once the contact element 4 is pressed to the electrodes of the galvanic cells 3 with pressing elements 8, the process of connecting the said elements 4, 3 with a laser beam is carried out.
