- the base section 5 is arranged between one or more cladding panels 25 and the mounting arrangement 24, and hence still within the cavity space 2.
- the longitudinal edge 10 of base section 5 is arranged at a top edge of a cladding panel 25. However, it is not excluded that said longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 is arranged above such top edge (or below a bottom edge) of a cladding panel 25.
- the elongated plate-like first spacer section 6 extends from a longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 outward relative to the imaginary plane 9 to define a first spacer 11 in a direction transverse to the imaginary plane 9, wherein the first spacer section 6 and the base section 5 enclose an obtuse angle a, and wherein the first spacer section 6 comprises ventilation openings 12.
- the elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 extends from an outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, wherein at least a part of the second spacer section 7 extends backward towards the imaginary plane 9.
- the elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 may be substantially flat (as shown in the preferred embodiments of Figures 1-6 and 9).
- a flat second spacer section 7 is preferred, in that it is easy to manufacture (i.e. it doesn’t require a bending step for the plate-like second spacer section 7), and because it requires the least amount of material.
- the plate-like second spacer section 7 may have a non-flat shape, such as the L-shape defined by a first sub-section 7-1 and a second sub-section 7-2 of the alternative embodiment shown in Figures 7 and 8, that will be describe in more detail below.
- first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 each define a respective first offset 14 and a second offset 15 of a second spacer 17 in a direction parallel to the imaginary plane 9.
- the total offset 16 of the second spacer 17 is defined as a distance extending from the longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5, parallel to, in particular in line with, the imaginary plane 9.
- the elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 extends from the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, in a direction parallel to the imaginary plane 9, away from the base section 5.
- An obtuse angle is a type of angle that is always larger than 90° but less than 180°. In other words, the obtuse angle a lies between 90° and 180°. If angle a is an obtuse angle, also the first spacer section comprises a direction component that extends away from the base section 5 in the direction parallel to the imaginary plane 9. Thus, if angle a is obtuse, both the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 contribute to the offset 16 of the second spacer 17 in the direction of the imaginary plane that is provided by the second spacer.
- the obtuse angle a between the first spacer section 6 and the base section 5 encloses an angle a in the range of 95° - 125°, preferably in the range of 100° - 120°, more preferably in the range of 105° - 115°, and most preferably about 110°.
- the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 enclose an acute angle p that fulfils the condition > 90° - (180° - a). Considering that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180°, the condition p > 90° - (180° - a) guarantees that the second spacer section 7 extends away from the base section 5, i.e. it encloses an angle y 90°. In this way, both the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 contribute to the total offset 16 of the second spacer 17.
- the acute angle p between the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 encloses an angle p in the range of 20° - 50°, preferably in the range of 25° - 45°, more preferably in the range of 30° - 40°, and most preferably about 35°.
- FIGS 7 and 8 show a ventilation profile 1 according to a second preferred embodiment of the invention.
- the ventilation profiles of the second preferred embodiment are closely related to the ventilation profile 1 of the first preferred embodiment. In order to prevent unnecessary repetition, mainly the differences are discussed. Like parts are numbered alike in the figures of both preferred embodiments.
- the second spacer section 7 of the ventilation profile 1 comprises a first sub-section 7-1 and a second sub-section 7-2.
- the first sub-section 7-1 extends from the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6 in a direction that is substantially parallel to the imaginary plane 9.
- the second sub-section 7-2 extends from the first plate-like section 7-1 backward towards the imaginary plane 9 and encloses an angle 5 in the range of 60° - 120° with the first plate-like sub section 7-1. In Figures 7 and 8, the angle 5 is about 90°, and consequently the first sub-section 7-1 and the second sub-section 7-2 define an L- shape.
- the second spacer section 7 may have a bend 18 dividing the second spacer section 7 into the first sub-section 7-1 and the second sub-section 7-2.
- the second spacer section 7 extends backward towards and inward past the imaginary plane 9.
- the second spacer section 7 may extend inward past the imaginary plane to define an inward offset 19 relative to the imaginary plane 9 in the range of 10 - 40 mm, preferably in the range of 15 - 35 mm, more preferably in the range of 20 - 30 mm, and most preferably about 25 mm.
- the second spacer section 7 of the ventilation profile 1 preferably also comprises ventilation openings 20.
- this is only showed for the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment, but it is explicitly mentioned that the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment may also be provided with such (not shown) ventilation openings 20.
- the ventilation openings 12, 20 are elongated with a maximum width W ⁇ 3 mm and/or a maximum length L ⁇ 10 mm.
- the ventilation openings 12, 20 shown in Figure 2 of the first preferred embodiment are rectangular with such dimensions.
- the ventilation openings 12, 20 may be substantially circular with a diameter D ⁇ 5 mm.
- the dimensions of the ventilation openings 12, 20 described in this paragraph guarantee that, on the one hand, birds and vermin are effectively prevented to enter into the cavity space 2, while, on the other hand, the ventilation openings 12, 20 may still provide an open area A that is sufficient to guarantee a sufficient ventilation capacity of the ventilation profile 1.
- the perforated first and second spacer sections 6, 7 may be relatively stiff, while also providing a relatively large open area A by the ventilation opening 12, 20.
- a relatively large open area A guarantees that the ventilation capacity of the ventilation profile 1 is sufficient to provide effective ventilation at the top side and/or an effective drainage route at the bottom side of the cavity space 2.
- the open area A provided by the ventilation openings 12, 20 fulfils the condition A > 50 cm 2 /m, preferably A > 80 cm 2 /m, more preferably A > 100 cm 2 /m, and most preferably A > 120 cm 2 /m, wherein the A is expressed in the total area of the openings in cm 2 per horizontal length of the cavity space in m.
- the elongated plate-like first spacer section 6 may comprise a first subsection 6-1 and a second sub-section 6-2, as shown in the detailed Figures 1 and 2.
- Figures 3-4 show a simplified drawing of the ventilation profile 1 of Figures 1 and 2, that lacks the level of detail to show the first sub-section 6-1.
- the first sub-section 6-1 is optional - see also the alternative embodiment shown in Figure 9.
- Figures 3-4 show a cross section of the ventilation profile 1 of Figures 1 and 2, wherein the ventilation openings 12, 20 are not visible, although present.
- the first sub-section 6-1 extends from the longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 substantially perpendicular outward relative to the imaginary plane 9, wherein the first sub-section 6-1 preferably extends ⁇ 10 mm from the base section 5.
- the second sub-section 6-2 extends between the first subsection 6-1 and the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, wherein the obtuse angle a is enclosed between the second sub-section 6-2 and the base section 5.
- the first sub-section 6-1 provides an abutment surface 31 that may facilitate in placing the ventilation profile 1 in a cladding system 4.
- the first spacer 11 defines an outward offset 21 relative to the imaginary plane 9 of at least 20 mm, preferably of at least 25 mm, more preferably of at least 30 mm, and most preferably of about 35 mm.
- the second spacer 17 defines the offset 16 relative to the edge 10 of the base section 5 from which the first spacer section 6 extends, parallel to the direction of the imaginary plane 9, of at least 10 mm, preferably of at least 15 mm, more preferably of at least 20 mm, and most preferably of about 25 mm.
- the offset 16 of the second spacer 17 is the sum of the first offset 14 provided by the first spacer section 6 and the second offset 15 provided by the second spacer section 7.
- the ventilation profiles 1 are made of plate-like sections, i.e. the base section 5, the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7.
- the ventilation profiles 1 are typically manufactures by bending a plate of material in the desired shape. It is however noted that the ventilation profiles 1 may be elastic to some extent, to thereby increase the versatility thereof and allow them to be fitted in a variety of situations.
- An advantage of the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment relative to the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment, is that it is fool proof in two directions. Moreover, the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment is nestable, and therefore requires less space during storage and logistics.
- Figures 3-6 and 8 show different versions of a cladding system 4 according to the invention that comprises a structural wall 23 comprising a mounting arrangement 24, a plurality of cladding panels 25 supported by the mounting arrangement 24, and one or more than one ventilation profile 1 according to the invention, that is arranged to prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space 2.
- the mounting arrangement 24 is made from wood, but may be made from other materials, such as aluminum.
- Insulating material 32 may be provided in said cavity space 2.
- the cladding panels preferably comprise fiber cement, which is a building material providing a decorative outer surface, appropriate mechanical strength and sufficiently low water absorption. Cladding panels of fiber cement are known per se, and for instance commercially available from Etex under the trade name EquitoneTM.
- such cladding panels 25 may also be generated as a series of plank-shaped elements, which are for instance arranged on top of each other or next to each other. These individual plank-shaped elements are known as sidings. Such plank-shaped elements, preferably comprising fiber cement, may be provided with tongues, grooves and/or beveled edges at the longitudinal edges, so as to mechanically interconnect these elements into larger structures, i.e. cladding panels.
- the ventilation profiles 1 of the present invention are particularly configured for fiber cement panels, although use for other cladding panels is not excluded. Due to the material composition of fiber cement panels, comprising both fibers and cement and preferably being relatively thin (6-15 mm, for instance 8-12 mm, such as 8 mm), a ventilation channel behind the panels is a requirement for appropriate lifetime of the panels.
- the plurality of cladding panels 25 is supported by the mounting arrangement 24 at a horizontal offset relative to the structural wall 23, wherein said horizontal offset defines the cavity space 2 between the structural wall 23 and the plurality of cladding panels 25, said cavity space 2 thereby providing a ventilation space 26 to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain.
- FIGs 3-6 show different applications of the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment in a cladding system 4 of a building 3.
- the ventilation profile 1 is arranged on a top side of the cavity space 2, just below a roofing element 22, while Figure 4 shows the ventilation profile 1 arranged below a window frame 27.
- Figures 5 and 6 show constructions similar to Figures 3 and 4, albeit with the ventilation profile 1 in a opposite orientation relative to the preferred orientation thereof, that is shown in Figures 3 and 4.
- the Figures demonstrate that the ventilation profile 1 is effective in all orientations in holding a construction profile 28, such as a window sill 29 or a roof trim profile 30, at a desired minimum offset relative to the cladding panels 25.
- the ventilation profile 1 is therefore fool proof. Consequently, cladding systems 4 using the ventilation profile 1 according to the invention provide a reliable ventilation capacity of the cavity space 2.
- Figure 8 shows a cross sectional view showing an application of the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment in a situation conform Figure 3.
- FIG. 9 shows a perspective view of a further embodiment of a ventilation profile 1 according to the invention.
- circular ventilation openings 12, 20 are arranged in a staggered configuration. If, instead of circular ventilation openings 12, 20, oval-shaped openings are used in an even further (not shown) embodiment, an even closer arrangement of the ventilation openings 12, 20 is possible, thereby increasing the total open area A provided by all the ventilation openings in combination.
- the ventilation profile 1 according to the invention, by virtue of the first spacer 11 and the second spacer 17 thereof, guarantees that the cavity space 2 cannot be closed off when the ventilation profile 1 is installed. Moreover, the ventilation profile 1 is also fool proof, because it is effective both in the preferred orientation shown in Figures 3 and 4, as well as in the less preferred orientation shown in Figures 7 and 8.

Description
Ventilation profile, cladding system comprising such a ventilation profile, and method of arranging such a ventilation profile
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a ventilation profile for preventing birds and/or vermin to enter into a cavity space of a building. The invention is further related to a cladding system comprising such a ventilation profile, and to a method of arranging such a ventilation profile into a cavity space of a cladding system.
Background of the invention
A ventilated fagade is a kind of two stage construction having an inner structure with a protective outer skin. The inner structure may be a structural wall, such as an insulated backing wall. The protective outer skin may be formed by a plurality of cladding panels that protect the inner structure against the elements. A ventilated fagade furthermore comprises an air gap or cavity space between the inner structure and the protective outer skin. Depending on the nature of the joints between the cladding panels, some water penetration may occur. The cavity space allows any moisture to evaporate and/or drain safely. Ideally, the ventilation space comprises both openings at the top and bottom of the fagade to provide both ventilation at the top side and an effective drainage route at the bottom side. This combination allows air to circulate and dry the cavity space between the inner structure and the protective outer skin. In addition to the openings at the top and bottom of the cavity space, a ventilated fagade preferably also comprises further openings to allow air to enter and exit under and over openings such as windows.
It is known to fit perforated profiles in ventilation openings to prevent birds and vermin to enter into the cavity space, where they may cause damage to the backing wall. Prior art perforated profiles often result in poor ventilation conditions of the fagade due to incorrect installation thereof.
It appears that ventilation profiles are prone to being installed incorrectly, wherein they may still provide a barrier for birds and vermin to enter into the cavity space, but also unintentionally mitigate the ventilation capacity of the ventilation space. Good ventilation is however crucial for buildings. After all, poor ventilation may
result in leaks, increased wear and even unhealthy living conditions (e.g. due to mold formation over time).
A complicating factor in installation of ventilation profiles is that often different installers are responsible for a part of the construction of a building, such as a first installer installing cladding panels, whereas a second installer may install a roof, etc. If a ventilation profile is installed incorrectly or even removed by one of the installers, the negative results thereof may only arise after some time, and it may be difficult to track which installer made an error, and make such an installer accountable.
Also when no ventilation profile is used, common mistakes in the construction by one or more than one installer may reduce or even fully block the ventilation capacity of the ventilation space.
Summary of the invention
An objective of the present invention is to provide a ventilation profile, that is improved relative to the prior art and wherein at least one of the above stated problems is obviated or alleviated.
Said objective is achieved with the ventilation profile for preventing birds and/or vermin to enter into a cavity space of a building according to claim 1 of the present invention, comprising:
- an elongated plate-like base section forming a substantially flat surface that is configured to be arranged in the cavity space of the building, wherein said flat surface of the base section defines an imaginary plane;
- an elongated plate-like first spacer section extending from a longitudinal edge of the base section outward relative to the imaginary plane to define a first spacer in a direction transverse to the imaginary plane, wherein the first spacer section and the base section enclose an obtuse angle a, and wherein the first spacer section comprises ventilation openings;
- an elongated plate-like second spacer section extending from an outward edge of the first spacer section, wherein at least a part of the second spacer section extends backward towards the imaginary plane; and
- wherein the first spacer section and the second spacer section each define a respective first and second offset of a second spacer in a direction parallel to the imaginary plane.
The ventilation profile according to the invention, by virtue of the first spacer and the second spacer thereof, guarantees that a cavity space cannot be closed off when the ventilation profile is installed in said cavity space. In this way, the ventilation profile may, on the one hand, effectively prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into a cavity space of a building, while, on the other hand, also guaranteeing that the cavity space is sufficiently ventilated. The ventilation profile thus prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space, and thereby guarantees that the cavity space remains unobstructed, so that it may form an effective ventilation space to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain from said cavity space. The ventilation profile may be used to provide both ventilation at the top side and an effective drainage route at the bottom side, as well as ventilation under a window frame.
Moreover, the ventilation profile is also fool proof, because it is effective in various orientations of the ventilation profile.
The above mentioned objective is furthermore achieved with a cladding system, comprising:
- a structural wall comprising a mounting arrangement;
- a plurality of cladding panels supported by the mounting arrangement at an horizontal offset relative to the structural wall, wherein said horizontal offset defines a cavity space between the structural wall and the plurality of cladding panels providing a ventilation space to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain; and
- one or more than one ventilation profile according to the invention, that is arranged to prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space.
The cladding system according to the invention, by virtue of the first spacer and the second spacer of the ventilation profile, guarantees that the cavity space cannot be closed off when the ventilation profile is installed. Moreover, the ventilation profile is also fool proof, because it is effective in various orientations of the ventilation profile.
The above mentioned objective is also achieved with a method of arranging a ventilation profile into a cavity space of a cladding system, comprising the steps of:
- arranging a mounting arrangement at an horizontal offset relative to a structural wall;
- placing one or more than one ventilation profile according to the invention against the mounting arrangement; and
- arranging a plurality of cladding panels on the mounting structure, thereby clamping the ventilation profile in between the mounting structure and the cladding panels, wherein said ventilation profile prevents birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space between the structural wall and the cladding panels, and wherein said cavity space forms a ventilation space to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain.
The ventilation profile thus prevents birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space, and thereby guarantees that the cavity space remains unobstructed, so that it may form an effective ventilation space to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain from said cavity space.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method, the step of arranging the one or more than one ventilation profile to prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space comprises at least one of:
- arranging the ventilation profile on a top side of the cavity space;
- arranging the ventilation profile on a bottom side of the cavity space; and
- arranging the ventilation profile below a window frame.
Preferred embodiments are the subject of the dependent claims. The various aspects and features described and shown in the specification can be applied, individually, wherever possible. These individual aspects, and in particular the aspects and features described in the attached dependent claims, may be an invention in its own right that is related to a different problem relative to the prior art.

Description of illustrative embodiments
The invention is related to a ventilation profile 1 for preventing birds and/or vermin to enter into a cavity space 2 of a building 3, more in particular a cavity space 2 of a cladding system 4. The ventilation profile 1 comprises an elongated platelike base section 5, an elongated plate-like first spacer section 6, and an elongated plate-like second spacer section 7.
The elongated plate-like base section 5 forms a substantially flat surface 8 that is configured to be arranged in the cavity space 2 of the building 3, wherein said flat surface 8 of the base section 5 defines an imaginary plane 9. As will be elucidated hereinafter in greater detail, the cavity space 2 is defined between a structural wall 23 and a plurality of cladding panels 25. The cladding panels 25 are mounted on a mounting arrangement 24, for instance in the form of bars, typically extending upwards, and not covering a back surface of the cladding panels 25 in their entirety. In the illustrated embodiment, the base section 5 is arranged between one or more cladding panels 25 and the mounting arrangement 24, and hence still within the cavity space 2. In the illustrated and preferred embodiment, the longitudinal edge 10 of base section 5 is arranged at a top edge of a cladding panel 25. However, it is not excluded that said longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 is arranged above such top edge (or below a bottom edge) of a cladding panel 25.
The elongated plate-like first spacer section 6 extends from a longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 outward relative to the imaginary plane 9 to define a first spacer 11 in a direction transverse to the imaginary plane 9, wherein the first spacer section 6 and the base section 5 enclose an obtuse angle a, and wherein the first spacer section 6 comprises ventilation openings 12.
The elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 extends from an outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, wherein at least a part of the second spacer section 7 extends backward towards the imaginary plane 9.
The elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 may be substantially flat (as shown in the preferred embodiments of Figures 1-6 and 9). A flat second spacer section 7 is preferred, in that it is easy to manufacture (i.e. it doesn’t require a bending step for the plate-like second spacer section 7), and because it requires the least amount of material. However, alternatively, the plate-like second spacer section 7 may have a non-flat shape, such as the L-shape defined by a first sub-section 7-1 and a second sub-section 7-2 of the alternative embodiment shown in Figures 7 and 8, that will be describe in more detail below.
According to the invention, wherein the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 each define a respective first offset 14 and a second offset 15 of a second spacer 17 in a direction parallel to the imaginary plane 9. The total offset 16 of the second spacer 17 is defined as a distance extending from the longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5, parallel to, in particular in line with, the imaginary plane 9. The elongated plate-like second spacer section 7 extends from the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, in a direction parallel to the imaginary plane 9, away from the base section 5.
An obtuse angle is a type of angle that is always larger than 90° but less than 180°.
According to the shown embodiments, the obtuse angle a between the first spacer section 6 and the base section 5 encloses an angle a in the range of 95° -
125°, preferably in the range of 100° - 120°, more preferably in the range of 105° - 115°, and most preferably about 110°.
According to the first preferred embodiment, the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 enclose an acute angle p that fulfils the condition > 90° - (180° - a).
For the ventilation profile 1 of the first preferred embodiments shown in Figures 1-6, the acute angle p between the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7 encloses an angle p in the range of 20° - 50°, preferably in the range of 25° - 45°, more preferably in the range of 30° - 40°, and most preferably about 35°.
Figures 7 and 8 show a ventilation profile 1 according to a second preferred embodiment of the invention. The ventilation profiles of the second preferred embodiment are closely related to the ventilation profile 1 of the first preferred embodiment. In order to prevent unnecessary repetition, mainly the differences are discussed. Like parts are numbered alike in the figures of both preferred embodiments.
According to the second preferred embodiment, the second spacer section 7 of the ventilation profile 1 comprises a first sub-section 7-1 and a second sub-section 7-2. The first sub-section 7-1 extends from the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6 in a direction that is substantially parallel to the imaginary plane 9. The second sub-section 7-2 extends from the first plate-like section 7-1 backward towards the imaginary plane 9 and encloses an angle 5 in the range of 60° - 120° with the first plate-like sub section 7-1. In Figures 7 and 8, the angle 5 is about 90°, and consequently the first sub-section 7-1 and the second sub-section 7-2 define an L- shape. As this second preferred embodiment shows, the second spacer section 7 may have a bend 18 dividing the second spacer section 7 into the first sub-section 7-1 and the second sub-section 7-2.
For both the first and the second preferred embodiment shown in the Figures, the second spacer section 7 extends backward towards and inward past the imaginary plane 9. The second spacer section 7 may extend inward past the imaginary plane to define an inward offset 19 relative to the imaginary plane 9 in the range of 10
- 40 mm, preferably in the range of 15 - 35 mm, more preferably in the range of 20 - 30 mm, and most preferably about 25 mm.
The second spacer section 7 of the ventilation profile 1 preferably also comprises ventilation openings 20. In the Figures, this is only showed for the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment, but it is explicitly mentioned that the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment may also be provided with such (not shown) ventilation openings 20.
Preferably, the ventilation openings 12, 20 are elongated with a maximum width W < 3 mm and/or a maximum length L < 10 mm. The ventilation openings 12, 20 shown in Figure 2 of the first preferred embodiment are rectangular with such dimensions. Alternatively, the ventilation openings 12, 20 may be substantially circular with a diameter D < 5 mm. The dimensions of the ventilation openings 12, 20 described in this paragraph guarantee that, on the one hand, birds and vermin are effectively prevented to enter into the cavity space 2, while, on the other hand, the ventilation openings 12, 20 may still provide an open area A that is sufficient to guarantee a sufficient ventilation capacity of the ventilation profile 1.
If the ventilation openings 12, 20 are arranged in a staggered configuration, as shown in Figure 2, the perforated first and second spacer sections 6, 7 may be relatively stiff, while also providing a relatively large open area A by the ventilation opening 12, 20. A relatively large open area A, guarantees that the ventilation capacity of the ventilation profile 1 is sufficient to provide effective ventilation at the top side and/or an effective drainage route at the bottom side of the cavity space 2.
In the shown embodiments, the open area A provided by the ventilation openings 12, 20 fulfils the condition A > 50 cm2/m, preferably A > 80 cm2/m, more preferably A > 100 cm2/m, and most preferably A > 120 cm2/m, wherein the A is expressed in the total area of the openings in cm2 per horizontal length of the cavity space in m.
The elongated plate-like first spacer section 6 may comprise a first subsection 6-1 and a second sub-section 6-2, as shown in the detailed Figures 1 and 2. Please note that the practical applications shown in Figures 3-4 show a simplified drawing of the ventilation profile 1 of Figures 1 and 2, that lacks the level of detail to show the first sub-section 6-1. It is also explicitly mentioned that the first sub-section
6-1 is optional - see also the alternative embodiment shown in Figure 9. Moreover, it is mentioned that Figures 3-4 show a cross section of the ventilation profile 1 of Figures 1 and 2, wherein the ventilation openings 12, 20 are not visible, although present.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the first sub-section 6-1 extends from the longitudinal edge 10 of the base section 5 substantially perpendicular outward relative to the imaginary plane 9, wherein the first sub-section 6-1 preferably extends < 10 mm from the base section 5. The second sub-section 6-2 extends between the first subsection 6-1 and the outward edge 13 of the first spacer section 6, wherein the obtuse angle a is enclosed between the second sub-section 6-2 and the base section 5. The first sub-section 6-1 provides an abutment surface 31 that may facilitate in placing the ventilation profile 1 in a cladding system 4.
In both the first and the second preferred embodiment of the ventilation profile 1 shown in the Figures, the first spacer 11 defines an outward offset 21 relative to the imaginary plane 9 of at least 20 mm, preferably of at least 25 mm, more preferably of at least 30 mm, and most preferably of about 35 mm.
Furthermore in both the first and the second preferred embodiment of the ventilation profile 1 shown in the Figures, the second spacer 17 defines the offset 16 relative to the edge 10 of the base section 5 from which the first spacer section 6 extends, parallel to the direction of the imaginary plane 9, of at least 10 mm, preferably of at least 15 mm, more preferably of at least 20 mm, and most preferably of about 25 mm. The offset 16 of the second spacer 17 is the sum of the first offset 14 provided by the first spacer section 6 and the second offset 15 provided by the second spacer section 7.
The ventilation profiles 1 according to both the first and the second preferred embodiment are made of plate-like sections, i.e. the base section 5, the first spacer section 6 and the second spacer section 7. The ventilation profiles 1 are typically manufactures by bending a plate of material in the desired shape. It is however noted that the ventilation profiles 1 may be elastic to some extent, to thereby increase the versatility thereof and allow them to be fitted in a variety of situations.
An advantage of the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment relative to the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment, is that it is fool proof in two directions. Moreover, the ventilation profile 1
according to the first preferred embodiment is nestable, and therefore requires less space during storage and logistics.
Figures 3-6 and 8 show different versions of a cladding system 4 according to the invention that comprises a structural wall 23 comprising a mounting arrangement 24, a plurality of cladding panels 25 supported by the mounting arrangement 24, and one or more than one ventilation profile 1 according to the invention, that is arranged to prevent birds and/or vermin to enter into the cavity space 2. In the Figures, the mounting arrangement 24 is made from wood, but may be made from other materials, such as aluminum. Insulating material 32 may be provided in said cavity space 2. The cladding panels preferably comprise fiber cement, which is a building material providing a decorative outer surface, appropriate mechanical strength and sufficiently low water absorption. Cladding panels of fiber cement are known per se, and for instance commercially available from Etex under the trade name Equitone™. In the context of the invention such cladding panels 25 may also be generated as a series of plank-shaped elements, which are for instance arranged on top of each other or next to each other. The ventilation profiles 1 of the present invention are particularly configured for fiber cement panels, although use for other cladding panels is not excluded. Due to the material composition of fiber cement panels, comprising both fibers and cement and preferably being relatively thin (6-15 mm, for instance 8-12 mm, such as 8 mm), a ventilation channel behind the panels is a requirement for appropriate lifetime of the panels.
The plurality of cladding panels 25 is supported by the mounting arrangement 24 at a horizontal offset relative to the structural wall 23, wherein said horizontal offset defines the cavity space 2 between the structural wall 23 and the plurality of cladding panels 25, said cavity space 2 thereby providing a ventilation space 26 to allow moisture to evaporate and/or drain.
Figures 3-6 show different applications of the ventilation profile 1 according to the first preferred embodiment in a cladding system 4 of a building 3. In Figure 3, the ventilation profile 1 is arranged on a top side of the cavity space 2, just
below a roofing element 22, while Figure 4 shows the ventilation profile 1 arranged below a window frame 27. Figures 5 and 6 show constructions similar to Figures 3 and 4, albeit with the ventilation profile 1 in a opposite orientation relative to the preferred orientation thereof, that is shown in Figures 3 and 4. The Figures demonstrate that the ventilation profile 1 is effective in all orientations in holding a construction profile 28, such as a window sill 29 or a roof trim profile 30, at a desired minimum offset relative to the cladding panels 25. The ventilation profile 1 is therefore fool proof. Consequently, cladding systems 4 using the ventilation profile 1 according to the invention provide a reliable ventilation capacity of the cavity space 2.
Figure 8 shows a cross sectional view showing an application of the ventilation profile 1 according to the second preferred embodiment in a situation conform Figure 3.
Figure 9 shows a perspective view of a further embodiment of a ventilation profile 1 according to the invention. In this embodiment, circular ventilation openings 12, 20 are arranged in a staggered configuration. If, instead of circular ventilation openings 12, 20, oval-shaped openings are used in an even further (not shown) embodiment, an even closer arrangement of the ventilation openings 12, 20 is possible, thereby increasing the total open area A provided by all the ventilation openings in combination.
From all examples of the cladding system 4 shown in Figures 3-6 and 8 it is clear that the ventilation profile 1 according to the invention, by virtue of the first spacer 11 and the second spacer 17 thereof, guarantees that the cavity space 2 cannot be closed off when the ventilation profile 1 is installed. Moreover, the ventilation profile 1 is also fool proof, because it is effective both in the preferred orientation shown in Figures 3 and 4, as well as in the less preferred orientation shown in Figures 7 and 8.
Although they show preferred embodiments of the invention, the above described embodiments are intended only to illustrate the invention and not to limit in any way the scope of the invention. Accordingly, it should be understood that where features mentioned in the appended claims are followed by reference signs, such signs are included solely for the purpose of enhancing the intelligibility of the claims and are in no way limiting on the scope of the claims.
