Description

Sharpening angle guide
Technical field to which invention relates
The invention relates to hand tools used for sharpening knife blades, specifically - to knife sharpening angle guides.
Relevant prior art
US patent application US3894362A, filing date 28-05-2074, describes a knife sharpener with a base and a pair of thin honing rods, which are attached to the basis at an acute angle. The honing rods are on the same plane and the acute angle between each rod and the basis is the same, each rod leaning at the opposite side of the basis, and are set in an elongated hand held base in adjacent angular relationship to each other and in acute angular relation to the base member.
The disadvantage of this sharpener is that it requires two sharpening rods and that the angle of sharpening is only maintained by attaching the honing rod to the basis with the help of leaning cavities. This limits the number of sharpening angles since in order to set the desired angle, one needs additional attachments (leaning cavities of the basis), which ensure that the required angle is maintained.
US patent US6595837B2, filing date 09-04- 2001 describes a knife sharpening stand for a cutlery device, consisting of a stand having two angled walls, which are attached to the vertical at a predetermined angle; walls, which are arranged so that they intersect at the vertical forming a vertex; an elongated sharpening device, having a handle and a prolonged sharpening part, which is leaned to any of the walls in the desired position; a handle at the top. The sharpening device is configured so that the sharpening angle is at a predetermined angle with the sharpening surface that is needed to sharpen the blades of cutlery. This way the blade is held vertically against the sharpening device, which is meant to sharpen it at the predetermined angle.
The disadvantage of of this sharpener is that the sharpening angle is determined by its two angled walls, which are arranged to fix a predetermined angle to the vertical, which limits the choice of the possible sharpening angles as in order to change the sharpening angle one needs a separate angled wall that is attached to i the basis before sharpening at the required angle, which increases the device size. The sharpening rod also does not attach to the stand at the desired angle, thus it is unstable and not comfortable to use during the sharpening.
European patent application EP1640116A1 , filing date 02-11-2004, describes an invention that relates to a carrying device for a stick-formed blade sharpener, containing a basic body with a smooth foot, which contains at least one nonslipping contact are concerning the foundation and at least one seat positioned at one surface of the basic body and corresponding with the end section of the blade sharpener so that the end section of the blade sharpener can be put into an angle position that is already defined.
The first disadvantage of the mentioned invention is that one must always hold the sharpening rod with your hand, which increases the chance of injury due to the proximity of the knife being sharpened to your other hand. The second disadvantage of this invention is that it only has one possible sharpening angle.
US patent US2002144410A1 , filing date 10-10-2002 describes a knife sharpening stand for a cutlery device, consisting of a stand having two angled walls, which are attached to the vertical at a predetermined angle; walls, which are arranged so that they intersect at the vertical forming a vertex; an elongated sharpening device, having a handle and a prolonged sharpening part, which is leaned to any of the walls in the desired position; a handle at the top. The sharpening device is configured so that the sharpening angle is at a predetermined angle with the sharpening surface that is needed to sharpen the blades of cutlery. This way the blade is held vertically against the sharpening device, which is meant to sharpen it at the predetermined angle.
The disadvantage of this sharpener is that the sharpening angle is determined by its two angled walls, which are arranged to fix a predetermined angle to the vertical, which limits the choice of the possible sharpening angles as in order to change the sharpening angle one needs a separate the angled wall that is attached to the basis before sharpening at the required angle, which increases the device’s size. The sharpening rod also does not attach to the stand at the desired angle, thus it is unstable and not comfortable to use during the sharpening. US patent US4719722A, filing date 01-19-1988, describes a knife sharpener rod pivotally mounted on a supporting base member whereby it can be angularly positioned for use and rotated into a recess or chamber in the base member for storage. A finger guard is also pivotally attached to the base member.
One disadvantage of this sharpener is that it is quite complicated and comprised of many parts. Furthermore, the adjustment and fixation of sharpening angles is less convenient than in the proposed invention.
Problem to be solved by the invention
The aim of the proposed invention is to simplify the design of a sharpening angle guide - to decrease the size, the number of sharpeners used. It also aims to extend the range of its applicability.
The essence of the invention
According to the proposed invention in a sharpening angle guide, comprising a base, in which a holder is mounted to hold a sharpening rod at a leaned angle to the vertical, wherein the leaning angle is preselected on the desired sharpening angle and the holder is configured so that the sharpening rod inserted in it has at least two possible leaning positions with respect to the vertical, wherein the base has a raised part with an inner cavity into which the holder is inserted and rotatably attached to the base by axis wherein a sharpening angle regulator is removably attached on the raised part with the possibility of changing its attaching position by rotating it, the angle regulator has a hole of a preselected shape and length, through which the holder passes and at a rotated position around the axis leans against the regulators hole’s edge which fixes the preselected sharpening angle and ensures a stable hold of the sharpening rod at the preselected angle during sharpening.
The angle regulator is disc-shaped, with central hole of smooth elongated symmetric shape and the disk-shaped regulator is provided with means for removably attaching it on the raised part of the base in its various rotated positions, thus changing the holder’s supporting location against the regulator hole’s edge and at the same time changing the sharpening angle of the sharpening rod.
The means for removably attaching the angle regulator includes holes, arranged in a circle in a side flat part of the disk-shaped angle regulator and at least two pins located on the raised part which fall during attaching of the disk-shaped angle regulator into its corresponding holes of the disc at the opposite sides of the, fixing the selected position of the angle regulator.
The means for removably attaching the angle regulator includes curved elongated cutouts, made in the side flat part of the disc angle regulator and located opposite each other, at least two threaded holes, made in the raised part and placed at opposite its sides, and at least two bolts, which during attaching pass through the corresponding cutouts in the disk angle regulator on its opposite sides and are screwed into the corresponding threaded holes in the raised part, fixing the selected position of the angle regulator.
The means for removably attaching the disk-shaped angle regulator to the raised part is configured as alternating recesses and projections made on an outer side edge of the disk-shaped angle regulator and on an inner side edge of the raised part in such a way that during said attaching of the said regulator, by inserting it in the cavity of raised part the recesses on outer side edge of the disk-shaped regulator enter the projections on an inner side edge of the raised part.
The elongated central hole in the regulator has the shape of an oval, or an ellipse, or two intersecting ellipses, or two intersecting ovals.
The holder’s inner cavity is configured to be able to accommodate sharpening rods of different shapes.
Advantages of the invention
The proposed invention has the advantage that the sharpening angle guide defined by the invention has a simple design, is small in size and comfortable to use. Using this angle guide allows for changing of sharpening rods as the cavity of the holder of the sharpening rod can be adjustable narrowing, of round form or some other form, which allows to attach sharpening rods of different shapes.
The proposed invention is explained in detail by drawings, which do not limit the scope of the invention and contain:
Fig.1 - a view of the proposed angle guide from the side;
Fig. 2 - a view of the proposed angle guide from the back;
Fig. 3 - a view of the proposed angle guide from the top;

Fig. 9 - an axonometric view of the angle guide, when the angle regulator is removably attached by geometry of its outer edge;
Fig. 10 - a proposed angle guide disassembled and its parts shown, when the angle regulator is removably attached by its outer edge.
Fig.6, Fig.8 and Fig.10 show the proposed sharpening angle guide in a disassembled state, where its parts are shown, such as: an axial screw (or pin) 1 , a holder 2 of a sharpening rod, which has a hole 2’ for the axial screw (or pin) 1 to be put through and a narrowing cavity 2”, which is configured and adapted to insert sharpening rods of different shapes. A base (body) 3 has a raised part 3’ in which a cavity 3” is formed for inserting the holder 2 which is rotatably attached to the base 3 with the help of the axial screw (or pin) 1. The angle regulator 4 has the shape of a disk, which in its central part has an elongated opening 4’ having the shape of two intersecting ellipses.
Fig. 6 shows the disk-shaped angle regulator 4, which is removably attached on the raised part 3’ of the base 3 by a plug connector, which consists of two pins 3”’ that are attached on the raised part 3’ of the base 3 and are arranged symmetrically opposite to each other. A side flat part of the disk-shaped regulator 4 has holes 4” placed in a circle-like fashion so that during the attaching in each position of the disk 4, rotated around its axis, the pins 3”’ could be put into the two oppositely placed holes 4” of the regulator 4 and in this way it attaches the regulator 4 on the raised part 3’ of the base 3 at the predetermined position.
The Fig. 8 shows the disk-shaped regulator 4, which is removably attached on the raised part 3’ of the base 3 with the help of bolts 5. In this case the disk-shaped regulator 4 has curved elongated cutouts 6 on its side flat part, which enables one to put through the bolts 5 at the desired rotated position of the regulator 4. A top part of the raised part 3’ has threaded holes 7 on opposite sides for the bolts 5 which enables to removably attach the regulator 4 on the top of the raised part 3’.
Fig. 9 shows the disk-shaped regulator 4, which is inserted in the cavity 3” of the raised part 3’ and removably attached within the raised part 3’ of the base 3. Fig. 10 shows that on an outer side edge 8 of the disk-shaped regulator 4 and on an inner side edge of the raised part 3’ are formed alternating recesses and projections in such a way that during said removably attaching the regulator 4 by inserting it in to the cavity 3” of the raised part 3’, recesses on outer side edge 8 of the disk-shaped regulator 4 enter the projections on an inner side edge of the raised part 3’.
Rotating the regulator 4 allows to attach it by outer edge 8 to the inner side edge of the raised part 3’ in various ways which allows to change the sharpening angles. Base 3 has cutouts 9 that provide convenient access to regulator 4.
How the device is used
The disk-shaped angle regulator 4 is removably attached on the raised part 3’ of the base 3. The position of the regulator 4 determines the support points of either the holder 2 or that of the sharpening rod to the edge of the inner opening 4’ of the angle regulator 4 and in this way the sharpening angle is chosen. The sharpening rod is inserted into the holder 2 and then the holder 2 is rotated around the axis 1 for leaning against the edge of the regulator’s 4 opening 4’. At this point the sharpening angle guide is ready for work.
The knife is held straight vertically and swiped through an inclined sharpening rod at an adjusted angle to the horizontal, starting with the bottom part to the tip by going up and down and in this way one of the sides of the blade is sharpened. When the sharpening of one side is complete, the holder 2 is rotated together with the sharpening rod to the other side for leaning against another support edge at the opposite side of the regulator and the knife is sharpened on the other side of the blade. When the sharpening on the other side of the blade is done, the knife is sharpened on different sides alternately, after resting the sharpener on one side of the regulator support and on the other symmetrical side.
This way we get rid of the burr formed during sharpening and we achieve a better result of the sharpening. In order to change the sharpening angle, when sharpening another knife, the regulator 4 is detached, then we change the position of the attachment of it to the raised part 3’ of the base 3 and then rotate the regulator around its axis and attaching it analogously on the raised part (3’) of the base. Then the described process is repeating.
