Abstract
A hinged-lid pack (1) for delivery systems is disclosed. The hinged-lid pack comprises a base (2) and a lid (3) rotatable about the base between open and closed positions. The lid comprises a lid front wall (6) that forms a line of juncture (7) with the base when the lid is in a closed position. A lid front wall flap (10) extends from the lid front wall and is attached to the base. The lid front wall and lid front wall flap are separated by a line of weakness (10). The arrangement being such that the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap separate along the line of weakness when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time. A method of manufacturing a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems is also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems and a method of manufacturing a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems.
Background
Smoking articles, such as cigarettes, are sold in packages. Known packages often comprise an outer carton made from cardboard which has a base and a hinged lid. The base typically receives a tobacco industry product and the lid is rotatable relative to the base between open and closed positions.
Summary
According to the present disclosure, there is provided a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems, the hinged-lid pack comprising a base and a lid rotatable about the base between open and closed positions, the lid comprising a lid front wall that forms a line of juncture with the base when the lid is in a closed position, wherein a lid front wall flap extends from the lid front wall and is attached to the base, wherein the lid front wall and lid front wall flap are separated by a line of weakness, the arrangement being such that the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap separate along the line of weakness when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time.
The base may comprise a base front wall, the lid front wall flap maybe attached to an inner surface of the base front wall.
The base may comprise a base front wall, the lid front wall flap maybe attached to an outer surface of the base front wall.
The line of weakness maybe in alignment with the line of juncture.
The line of weakness maybe spaced from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall. The lid front wall flap may be integrally formed with the lid front wall.
The line of weakness maybe spaced from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall. The portion of the lid front wall flap extending from the base or lid may be provided with indicia.
The line of weakness may be linear. The line of weakness may be non-linear.
The line of weakness may be configured to provide audial or resistive feedback when the line of weakness separates. According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems, the method comprising: providing a base and a lid rotatable about the base between open and closed positions, the lid comprising a lid front wall that forms a line of juncture with the base when the lid is in a closed position; providing a lid front wall flap extending from the lid front wall; fixing the lid front wall flap to the base; and providing the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap with a line of weakness configured to separate when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time.
The base may comprise a base front wall, the method may comprise fixing the lid front wall flap to an inner surface of the base front wall.
The base may comprise a base front wall, the method may comprise fixing the lid front wall flap to an outer surface of the base front wall. The method may comprise aligning the line of weakness with the line of juncture.
The method may comprise spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall.
The lid front wall flap may be integrally formed with the lid front wall.
The method may comprise spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall.

Detailed Description
As used herein, the term “delivery system” is intended to encompass systems that deliver at least one substance to a user, and includes: combustible aerosol provision systems, such as cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, and tobacco for pipes or for roll-your-own or for make-your-own cigarettes (whether based on tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, tobacco substitutes or other smokable material); non-combustible aerosol provision systems that release compounds from an aerosol-generating material without combusting the aerosol-generating material, such as electronic cigarettes, tobacco heating products, and hybrid systems to generate aerosol using a combination of aerosol-generating materials; and aerosol-free delivery systems that deliver the at least one substance to a user orally, nasally, transdermally or in another way without forming an aerosol, including but not limited to, lozenges, gums, patches, articles comprising inhalable powders, and oral products such as oral tobacco which includes snus or moist snuff, wherein the at least one substance may or may not comprise nicotine.
According to the present disclosure, a “combustible” aerosol provision system is one where a constituent aerosol-generating material of the aerosol provision system (or component thereof) is combusted or burned during use in order to facilitate delivery of at least one substance to a user.
In some embodiments, the delivery system is a combustible aerosol provision system, such as a system selected from the group consisting of a cigarette, a cigarillo and a cigar.
According to the present disclosure, a “non-combustible” aerosol provision system is one where a constituent aerosol-generating material of the aerosol provision system (or component thereof) is not combusted or burned in order to facilitate delivery of at least one substance to a user.
In some embodiments, the delivery system is a non-combustible aerosol provision system, such as a powered non-combustible aerosol provision system.
In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is an electronic cigarette, also known as a vaping device or electronic nicotine delivery system (END), although it is noted that the presence of nicotine in the aerosol-generating material is not a requirement.
In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is an aerosol- generating material heating system, also known as a heat-not-burn system. An example of such a system is a tobacco heating system.
In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is a hybrid system to generate aerosol using a combination of aerosol-generating materials, one or a plurality of which may be heated. Each of the aerosol-generating materials may be, for example, in the form of a solid, liquid or gel and may or may not contain nicotine.
In some embodiments, the hybrid system comprises a liquid or gel aerosol-generating material and a solid aerosol-generating material. The solid aerosol-generating material may comprise, for example, tobacco or a non-tobacco product.
Typically, the non-combustible aerosol provision system may comprise a noncombustible aerosol provision device and a consumable for use with the noncombustible aerosol provision device. In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system, such as a noncombustible aerosol provision device thereof, may comprise a power source and a controller. The power source may, for example, be an electric power source or an exothermic power source. In some embodiments, the exothermic power source comprises a carbon substrate which may be energised so as to distribute power in the form of heat to an aerosol-generating material or to a heat transfer material in proximity to the exothermic power source.
In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system may comprise an area for receiving the consumable, an aerosol generator, an aerosol generation area, a housing, a mouthpiece, a filter and/or an aerosol-modifying agent.
In some embodiments, the consumable for use with the non-combustible aerosol provision device may comprise aerosol-generating material, an aerosol-generating material storage area, an aerosol-generating material transfer component, an aerosol generator, an aerosol generation area, a housing, a wrapper, a filter, a mouthpiece, and/or an aerosol-modifying agent.
In some embodiments, the delivery system is an aerosol-free delivery system that delivers at least one substance to a user orally, nasally, transdermally or in another way without forming an aerosol, including but not limited to, lozenges, gums, patches, articles comprising inhalable powders, and oral products such as oral tobacco which includes snus or moist snuff, wherein the at least one substance may or may not comprise nicotine. In some embodiments, the substance to be delivered may be an aerosol-generating material or a material that is not intended to be aerosolised. As appropriate, either material may comprise one or more active constituents, one or more flavours, one or more aerosol-former materials, and/or one or more other functional materials. In some embodiments, the substance to be delivered comprises an active substance.
The active substance as used herein may be a physiologically active material, which is a material intended to achieve or enhance a physiological response. The active substance may for example be selected from nutraceuticals, nootropics, psychoactives. The active substance may be naturally occurring or synthetically obtained. The active substance may comprise for example nicotine, caffeine, taurine, theine, vitamins such as B6 or B12 or C, melatonin, cannabinoids, or constituents, derivatives, or combinations thereof. The active substance may comprise one or more constituents, derivatives or extracts of tobacco, cannabis or another botanical. In some embodiments, the active substance comprises nicotine. In some embodiments, the active substance comprises caffeine, melatonin or vitamin B12.
As noted herein, the active substance may comprise one or more constituents, derivatives or extracts of cannabis, such as one or more cannabinoids or terpenes.
As noted herein, the active substance may comprise or be derived from one or more botanicals or constituents, derivatives or extracts thereof. As used herein, the term "botanical" includes any material derived from plants including, but not limited to, extracts, leaves, bark, fibres, stems, roots, seeds, flowers, fruits, pollen, husk, shells or the like. Alternatively, the material may comprise an active compound naturally existing in a botanical, obtained synthetically. The material may be in the form of liquid, gas, solid, powder, dust, crushed particles, granules, pellets, shreds, strips, sheets, or the like. Example botanicals are tobacco, eucalyptus, star anise, hemp, cocoa, cannabis, fennel, lemongrass, peppermint, spearmint, rooibos, chamomile, flax, ginger, ginkgo biloba, hazel, hibiscus, laurel, licorice (liquorice), matcha, mate, orange skin, papaya, rose, sage, tea such as green tea or black tea, thyme, clove, cinnamon, coffee, aniseed (anise), basil, bay leaves, cardamom, coriander, cumin, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, rosemary, saffron, lavender, lemon peel, mint, juniper, elderflower, vanilla, wintergreen, beefsteak plant, curcuma, turmeric, sandalwood, cilantro, bergamot, orange blossom, myrtle, cassis, valerian, pimento, mace, damien, marjoram, olive, lemon balm, lemon basil, chive, carvi, verbena, tarragon, geranium, mulberry, ginseng, theanine, theacrine, maca, ashwagandha, damiana, guarana, chlorophyll, baobab or any combination thereof. The mint maybe chosen from the following mint varieties: Mentha Arventis, Mentha c.v., Mentha niliaca, Mentha piperita, Mentha piperita citrata c.v., Mentha piperita c.v, Mentha spicata crispa, Mentha cardifolia, Mentha longifolia,

In some embodiments, the active substance comprises or is derived from one or more botanicals or constituents, derivatives or extracts thereof and the botanical is tobacco.
In some embodiments, the active substance comprises or derived from one or more botanicals or constituents, derivatives or extracts thereof and the botanical is selected from eucalyptus, star anise, cocoa and hemp.
In some embodiments, the active substance comprises or derived from one or more botanicals or constituents, derivatives or extracts thereof and the botanical is selected from rooibos and fennel. In some embodiments, the substance to be delivered comprises a flavour.
As used herein, the terms "flavour" and "flavourant" refer to materials which, where local regulations permit, may be used to create a desired taste, aroma or other somatosensorial sensation in a product for adult consumers. They maybe imitation, synthetic or natural ingredients or blends thereof. They may be in any suitable form, for example, liquid such as an oil, solid such as a powder, or gas. In some embodiments, the flavour comprises menthol, spearmint and/ or peppermint.
In some embodiments, the flavour comprises flavour components of cucumber, blueberry, citrus fruits and/or redberry. In some embodiments, the flavour comprises eugenol. In some embodiments, the flavour comprises flavour components extracted from tobacco. In some embodiments, the flavour comprises flavour components extracted from cannabis.
In some embodiments, the flavour may comprise a sensate, which is intended to achieve a somatosensorial sensation which are usually chemically induced and perceived by the stimulation of the fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve), in addition to or in place of aroma or taste nerves, and these may include agents providing heating, cooling, tingling, numbing effect. A suitable heat effect agent may be, but is not limited to, vanillyl ethyl ether and a suitable cooling agent may be, but not limited to eucalyptol, WS-3. Figure 1 illustrates a hinged-lid pack 1 for delivery systems according to an embodiment of the invention. The pack 1 comprises a base 2 and a lid 3 hingedly connected to the base 2 along a hinge 4 in order to allow the pack to be opened and closed. The base 2 comprises a base front wall 5 and the lid 3 comprises a lid front wall 6. The lid front wall 6 and the base 2 meet at a line of juncture 7 when the lid 3 is in the closed position.
It will be appreciated that the base 2 forms a delivery system receiving space in which delivery systems 8 such as smoking articles or other tobacco industry products are received and stored. The delivery systems 8 are accessible when the lid 3 is in an open position, and the delivery systems 8 are retained in the delivery system receiving space when the lid 3 is in a closed position. Typically, the delivery systems 8 are wrapped in a bundle 9.
The lid front wall 6 comprises a lid front wall flap to extending from the lid front wall 6 and attached to the base 2. As seen in Figure 1, the lid front wall flap 10 has a width equal to that of the base front wall 5. It is to be appreciated that in other embodiments, the lid front wall flap 10 may have a width which is less that the width of the base front wall 5. The lid front wall flap 10 is integrally formed with the lid front wall 6. A portion of the lid front wall flap 10 is fixed to an inside surface of the base front wall 5. Alternatively, the entire lid front wall flap 10 is fixed to the inside surface of the base front wall 5. Furthermore, in other embodiments the lid front wall flap 10 is attached to an outer surface of the base front wall 5. The lid front wall 6 and lid front wall flap 10 are separated by a line of weakness 11. The pack 1 is arranged such that when the lid 3 is rotated into an open position for the first time, the lid front wall 6 and the lid front wall flap 10 separate along the line of weakness 11 and provide an indication that the package 1 has previously been opened.
As seen in Figure 1, the line of weakness 11 is linear. However, it is to be appreciated that the line of weakness 11 may be non-linear. A linear line of weakness is beneficial due to ease of manufacture. Additionally, a linear line of weakness maximises uninterrupted space on the pack which can be used to present information to a consumer. Alternatively, a non-linear line of weakness allows greater ease of opening as a non-linear line of weakness intuitively tears from one end of the line of weakness to the other. Furthermore, the line of weakness 11 may be configured to provide audial or resistive feedback to a consumer opening the package 1 for the first time. In some embodiments, the line of weakness comprises a tear tape formed between the lid front wall 6 and the lid front wall flap 10. It is to be appreciated that the tear tape may comprise a tab to enable tearing of the tear tape. When the line of weakness 11 comprises a tear tape, a consumer is unable to open the pack 1 until the tear tape is removed. Once removed, the consumer is able to rotate the lid 3 into an open position. Additionally, once removed from the pack 1, it is clear to a consumer that the pack 1 has been previously opened as the tear tape leaves a visible gap.
Figure 1 illustrates the pack 1 with the lid 3 in the open position. Hence, the lid front wall 6 and lid front wall flap 10 have already separated along the line of weakness 11. In this embodiment, the line of weakness 11 is aligned with the line of juncture 7.
Therefore, the lid front wall flap 10 remains behind the base front wall 5 and is not
visible to consumers when the pack 1 is opened for the first time. The lid front wall flap to is fixed within the base 2 by any suitable means to ensure that the lid front wall flap 10 separates from the lid front wall 6 along the line of weakness 11 when the lid 3 is rotated into the open position for the first time. In other words, the strength of the connection between the lid front wall flap 10 and the inside surface of the base front wall 5 is stronger than force required to break the line of weakness 11. The lid front wall flap 10 may be permanently fixed to the inside or outside surface of the base front wall 5 by any suitable means, such as via a region of permanent adhesive. Figure 2 illustrates another embodiment of the hinged-lid pack 1 according to the invention. Here, the line of weakness 11 is spaced from the line of juncture 7. Therefore, when the lid 3 is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness 11 separates, a portion 12 of the lid front wall flap 10 extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall 6. The portion 12 of the lid front wall flap 10 which extends from the lid front wall 6 may comprise indicia to communicate information to the consumer.
Figure 3 illustrates another embodiment of the hinged-lid pack 1 according to the invention. Here, the lid front wall flap 10 is not integral with the lid front wall 6 and is attached to the lid front wall 6 by any suitable means, such as an adhesive. The adhesive is preferably of the permanent type so that the lid front wall flap 10 does not separate from the lid front wall 6 when the pack 1 is opened. Additionally, the lid front wall flap is attached to an inside surface of the base front wall 5. When the lid 3 is opened for the first time, the lid front wall flap 10 will separate along the line of weakness 11. As seen in Figure 3, a portion 13 of the lid front wall flap 10 extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall 5. The portion 13 of the lid front wall flap 10 which extends from the base may comprise indicia to communicate information to the consumer.
Figure 4 illustrates a flow diagram of method steps of a method of manufacturing a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems according to an embodiment of the invention. The method comprises a first step Si of providing a base and a lid rotatable about the base between open and closed positions. The lid comprises a lid front wall that forms a line of juncture with the base when the lid is in a closed position. The second and third steps
S2, S3 of the method comprise providing a lid front wall flap extending from the lid
front wall, and fixing the lid front wall flap to the base, respectively. Finally, the method comprises a fourth step S4 of providing the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap with a line of weakness configured to separate when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time.
In some embodiments, the third step S3 of fixing the lid front wall flap to the base comprises fixing the lid front wall flap to an inner surface of the base front wall. Alternatively, the third step S3 comprises fixing the lid front wall flap to an outer surface of the base front wall.
The method may comprise a fifth step S5 of aligning the line of weakness with the line of juncture. As an alternative, the fifth stap S5 may comprise spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall. Additionally, as another alternative, when the lid front wall flap is integrally formed with the lid front wall, the fifth step S5 may comprise spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall.
Furthermore, the method may comprise a sixth step S6 comprising providing the portion of the lid front wall flap extending from the base or lid with indicia. The various embodiments described herein are presented only to assist in understanding and teaching the claimed features. These embodiments are provided as a representative sample of embodiments only and are not exhaustive and/or exclusive. Claims
1. A hinged-lid pack for delivery systems, the hinged-lid pack comprising a base and a lid rotatable about the base between open and closed positions, the lid comprising a lid front wall that forms a line of juncture with the base when the lid is in a closed position, wherein a lid front wall flap extends from the lid front wall and is attached to the base, wherein the lid front wall and lid front wall flap are separated by a line of weakness, the arrangement being such that the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap separate along the line of weakness when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time .
2. A hinged-lid pack according to claim i, wherein the base comprises a base front wall, the lid front wall flap being attached to an inner surface of the base front wall. 3. A hinged-lid pack according to claim i, wherein the base comprises a base front wall, the lid front wall flap being attached to an outer surface of the base front wall.
4. A hinged-lid pack according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the line of weakness is in alignment with the line of juncture.
5. A hinged-lid pack according to any of claims 2 to 4, wherein the line of weakness is spaced from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall.
6. A hinged-lid pack according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the lid front wall flap is integrally formed with the lid front wall.
7. A hinged-lid pack according to claim 5, wherein the line of weakness is spaced from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall.
8. A hinged-lid pack according to claims 5 or 7, wherein the portion of the lid front wall flap extending from the base or lid is provided with indicia.
9. A hinged-lid pack according to any preceding claim, wherein the line of weakness is linear. to. A hinged-lid pack according to preceding claim, wherein the line of weakness is non-linear. n. A hinged-lid pack according to any preceding claim, wherein the line of weakness is configured to provide audial or resistive feedback when the line of weakness separates.
12. A method of manufacturing a hinged-lid pack for delivery systems, the method comprising: providing a base and a lid rotatable about the base between open and closed positions, the lid comprising a lid front wall that forms a line of juncture with the base when the lid is in a closed position; providing a lid front wall flap extending from the lid front wall; fixing the lid front wall flap to the base; and providing the lid front wall and the lid front wall flap with a line of weakness configured to separate when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time.
13. A method according to claim 12, wherein the base comprises a base front wall, the method comprising fixing the lid front wall flap to an inner surface of the base front wall.
14. A method according to claim 12, wherein the base comprises a base front wall, the method comprising fixing the lid front wall flap to an outer surface of the base front wall. 15. A method according to any of claims 12 to 14, comprising aligning the line of weakness with the line of juncture.

A method according to any of claims 13 to 15, comprising spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into an open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a top edge of the base front wall.
17- A method according to any of claims 12 to 15, wherein the lid front wall flap is integrally formed with the lid front wall. 18. A method according to claim 17, comprising spacing the line of weakness from the line of juncture such that when the lid is rotated into the open position for the first time and the line of weakness separates, a portion of the lid front wall flap extends beyond a bottom edge of the lid front wall. 19. A method according to claim 16 or 18, comprising providing the portion of the lid front wall flap extending from the base or lid with indicia.
