    Field of the invention
  • The invention relates to the field of book binding, in particular to book binding machines that are manual or semi-manual.
  • Technical background
  • European patent publications 1 476 314 B1 , 1 478 519 B1 , 2 809 452 B1 and 2 832 556 B1 illustrate certain aspects of a book binding machine of the present applicant and of the book binding machine that may also be contained in the book binding machine of the present invention. Basic operation of manufacturing a book with a bookbinding device of known kind is demonstrated in the video "m_elite_hc" that is downloadable at the time on writing on May 28, 2024 under https://fastbind.com/en/machines/hot-melt-binders/elite.
  • Machines of these kinds have been successful on the market. With them, good-quality binding of books, photobooks and brochures, for example, may be possible with a relatively short training, thanks to user control of the alignment of the bundle of sheets in the machine, at the moments before the glueing is performed.

  • The bookbinding machine further comprises a rotatable staple holder which is suitable for receiving a staple of sheets. Preferably, in a first rotational position of the rotatable staple holder, the spine edge of the staple of sheets is in a position along which the adhesive collection surface will move when the adhesive spreader roller moves along the guide rail rotating the glue spreading roller such that the roller in contact with the spine edge spreads adhesive to the spine edge, and in a second rotational position, the spine edge of the staple is in a position to face a spine rest, for attaching a book cover to the staple to which glue has been spread, to make a book blank.
  • The objective can be achieved with a bookbinding machine according to independent claim 1 and also with a bookbinding machine according to claim 14.
  • Advantages of the invention
  • The staple holder comprises a pivotable holder arm that in a first position is in a loading position to facilitate placing of a staple of sheets to the holder, and in a second position is in a closed position. With the improved staple holder, not only loading a book cover but also a staple of sheets into the bookbinding machine is easier: The user can use two hands and does not need to thread the staple of sheets into the machine.
  • Advantageously, the bookbinding machine comprises a brake arranged to slow the rotational movement of the pivotable holder arm. With the brake, uncontrolled falling of the pivotable holder arm may be slowed down to avoid injury. Further, especially if the pivotable holder arm and/or its support is made of sheet metal, with the brake, the damage to the arm and/or its support may be better avoided.

Depending on the implementation, the angles may be chosen differently, such as between 93 to 105 degrees from the horizontal line, more preferably between 94 and 100 degrees from the horizontal line (x), and most preferably essentially about 95 degrees from the horizontal line.
  • The bookbinding machine preferably further comprises a means to change the pivotable holder arm from a closed position to a locked position and vise versa, preferably such that the pivotable holder arm is moved in front-back direction from front to back and from back to front, respectively. This movement is preferably done such that both ends of the pivotable holder arm move in a synchronized manner.
  • The means to change the pivotable holder arm from a closed position to a locked position may comprise threaded positions at both ends of the pivotable holder arm that are arranged to run along a thread. The threaded positions may be arranged such that their movement may be controlled, preferably in form-locking manner.
  • The thread may be an acme screw thread.
  • The means to change the pivotable holder arm from a closed position to a locked position may be manually drivable, such as by rotating a knob or wheel. This is preferably implemented so that the manual drive causes the threaded positions to run along the thread at both ends of the pivotable holder arm, preferably in a synchronous manner. This may be carried out using a torque transmitting member, such as gears or toothed wheels and a chain. The manual drive may enable the user to have better control over the bookbinding machine.
  • Alternatively, or in addition, the means to change the pivotable holder arm from a closed position to a locked position may be drivable by an electric motor, preferably in a form-locked manner, most preferably by using gears or toothed wheel and a chain. This is preferably implemented so that the electric motor causes the threaded positions to run along the thread at both ends of the pivotable holder arm, preferably in a synchronous manner. This may be carried out using a torque transmitting member, such as gears or toothed wheels and a chain. The electronic drive may enable the user to experience less fatigue when using the bookbinding machine.
  • The bookbinding machine may further comprise a protective cover (that may be transparent or at least partly transparent) adapted to cover at least the glue spreading roller, connected to a position switch such that when the cover is closed, the position switch is configured to close a control circuit, such as by closing a normally open connector. This may be an easier and cheaper alternative to a light barrier (photo-electric relay). Especially advantageously, if the bookbinding machine comprises a recess or opening for accommodating the pivotable holder arm in its loading position, the protective cover may be located at the recess or opening or so that it covers the recess or opening. The idea behind this is that the cover must be opened to change the pivotable holder arm from closed or locked position to loading position. If the pivotable holder arm is in the loading position, it may prevent the protective cover from being closed.
  • The bookbinding machine may comprises a number of push buttons () configured to activate a book glueing sequence, advantageously so that a number of electric motors is activated.
  • The bookbinding machine may further comprise a support
    structure -that may be realized as the frame- adapted to keep the pivotable holder arm at an elevated position such that the pivotable holder arm leaves at least 1 to 2 cm, preferably at least 2 cm free space under it when in closed and/or locked position, to protect user's fingers and hand. In this manner, injuries may be better avoided.
  • The frame may comprise a recess or opening for accommodating the pivotable holder arm in its loading position. This is practical in the regard that the bookbinding machine may be realized lower i.e. less high in the height direction of the bookbinding machine.
  • The bookbinding machine may further comprise liner-rotational movement conversion means, such as a chain and gears or toothed wheels, that convert a linear movement of the adhesive tank and/or the adhesive spreading roller along the guide rail to rotational movement of the adhesive spreading roller, or vice versa. The chain may be placed behind the way of movement of the pivotable holder arm such that the pivotable holder arm can be turned into the loading position. This is practical in the regard that the bookbinding machine may be realized lower i.e. less high in the height direction of the bookbinding machine.

  • Detailed description
  • FIG 26 shows a bookbinding machine 10 comprising a frame that comprises a guide rail 1003, and an adhesive tank 1001 that is movable back and forth along the guide rail 1003. The bookbinding machine 10 further comprises an adhesive spreader roller 1002, having a patterned adhesive collection surface and arranged below the adhesive tank 1001 such that rotation of the roller 1002 about its longitudinal axis captures adhesive from the tank 1001 onto the adhesive collection surface and, when the adhesive on the adhesive collection surface is in contact with a spine edge 504 of a staple 501 of sheets that is to be bound to a book, spreads the adhesive onto the spine edge 504. The bookbinding machine 20 comprises an adhesive collection tray 1009 for collecting the adhesive that may drop from the adhesive collecting roller 1002.
  • The operation of this kind of bookbinding machines is as such known from the present applicant's European patents referred to above. The details of the glue spreader roller, adhesive container, and linear guide and their mutual arrangement may be realized as described in European patent publication 1 476 314 B1 of the present applicant, the details of which are incorporated by reference. Alternatively, or in addition they may be realized as cartridge-like implementations, having a modified mechanism for moving the glue tank and/or rotating the glue roller. With this regard, the contents of European patent publications 2 809 452 B1 and 2 832 556 B1 in these respects are incorporated by reference.
  • As shown in FIG 1, the bookbinding machine 10 further comprises a rotatable staple holder 20 which is suitable for receiving a staple 501 of sheets, the staple holder 20 comprising a pivotable holder arm 22 that in a first position is in a loading position to facilitate placing of the staple 501 of sheets to the holder 20, and in a second position is in a closed position. The staple holder 20 is different from the staple holders of the staple holders contained in the bookbinding machines described in the patents presented background and shown on the mentioned video.
  • The operating lever 1007 and the associated mechanisms (turning the rotatable staple holder 20 and moving the nipping plate 30) may be implemented as described in European patent publication 1 478 519 B1 of the present applicant, which is incorporated by reference, but other ways of implementation may of course be possible.
  • In a first rotational position of the rotatable staple holder 20, the spine edge 504 of the staple 501 of sheets placed in the staple holder 20 is in a position along which the adhesive collection surface will move when the adhesive spreader roller 1002 moves along the guide rail 1003 rotating the glue spreading roller 1002 such that the roller 1002 in contact with the spine edge spreads adhesive to the spine edge 504, and in a second rotational position, the spine edge 504 of the staple is in a position to face a spine rest 29, for attaching a book cover 500 to the staple 501 to which glue has been spread, to make a book blank 550. The spine rest 29 may be realized as a surface only, but its function is to support the book cover 500 such that the spine edge 504 can be suitably attached to the book cover 500.
  • The bookbinding machine 10 may comprise a nipping plate 30 movable back-and-forth in the front-back direction and arranged to go underneath of the pivotable holder arm 22 that is in the closed position or locked position.
  • The bookbinding machine may comprise a brake (see section IV-IV) arranged to slow the rotational movement of the pivotable holder arm 22. The brake may comprise segments which preferably are arranged on a circular segment, or especially in circular arc (shown as oblong segments in FIG 19) i) with increased friction in the rotational direction and/or ii) to which the pivotable holder arm 22 imparts momentum.
  • The pivotable holder arm 22 in its loading position is turned over the vertical line y, such that the pivotable holder arm 22 remaining open is facilitated by gravity, the turning over angle α (cf. FIG 4 and FIG 17) being preferably between -93 to -105 degrees from the horizontal line, more preferably between -94 and -100 degrees from the horizontal line x, and most preferably essentially about -95 degrees from the horizontal line x. The direction can be implemented also so that the left end of the pivotable support arm is rotated, in which situation the angles are positive.
  • The bookbinding machine 20 may comprises a means 25, 28, 27, 23, cf. also detail III in FIG 16) to change the pivotable holder arm (22) from a closed position to a locked position and vise versa, preferably such that the pivotable holder arm is moved in front-back direction from front to back and from back to front, respectively, preferably such that both ends of the pivotable holder arm 22 move in a synchronized manner.
  • The means 25, 28, 27, 23, detail III may comprise threaded positions at both ends of the pivotable holder arm 22 that are arranged to run along a thread 23, 27, respectively, preferably such that their movement along the thread 23, 27 is controlled, advantageously in form-locking manner.
  • The thread 23, 27 is preferably an acme screw thread.
  • The means 25, 28, 27, 23, detail III may be manually drivable, such as by rotating a knob 28 and/or wheel 25, preferably such that the manual drive causes the threaded positions to run along the thread 23, 27 at both ends of the pivotable holder arm 22, preferably in a synchronous manner, advantageously implemented using a torque transmitting member 161, 162, 184, such as gears or toothed wheels and a chain.
  • Alternatively, or in addition, the means 25, 28, 27, 23, detail III may be drivable by an electric motor 163, preferably in a form-locked manner, most preferably by using a torque transmitting member 161, 162, 184 such as gears or toothed wheel and a chain, preferably such that the electric drive causes the threaded positions to run along the thread 23, 27 at both ends of the pivotable holder arm 22, preferably in a synchronous manner.
  • The bookbinding machine 10 may further comprise a protective cover 1008 -that preferably is transparent or partially transparent-adapted to cover at least the adhesive spreading roller 1002, connected to a position switch such that when the cover 1008 is closed, the position switch is configured to close a control circuit, such as by closing a normally open connector, advantageously so that the bookbinding machine 10 also comprises a recess or opening 1010 for accommodating the pivotable holder arm 22 in its loading position. The protective cover 1008 may advantageously be located at the recess or opening 1010 or so that it covers the recess or opening 1010, such that the cover 1008 must be opened to change the pivotable holder arm 22 from closed or locked position to loading position, and preferably also such that when the pivotable holder arm 22 is in the loading position, it may prevent the protective cover 1008 from being closed.
  • The bookbinding machine 10 may comprise a number of push buttons 142, 143 configured to activate a book glueing sequence, advantageously so that a number of electric motors is activated. Especially, the push buttons 142, 143 may be used to change the pivotable support arm 22 from closed position to locked position, and vice versa.
  • The bookbinding machine 10 may also comprise a support structure, such as drive housing 150, adapted to keep the pivotable holder arm 22 at an elevated position such that the pivotable holder arm 22 leaves at least 1 to 2 cm, preferably at least 2 cm free space under it when in closed and/or locked position.
  • The frame may comprises a recess or opening 1010 for accommodating the pivotable holder arm 22 in its loading position.
  • As explained in the documents incorporated by reference, the bookbinding device 10 preferably comprises a linear-rotational movement conversion means, such as a chain and gears or toothed wheels, that convert a linear movement of the adhesive tank 1001 and/or the adhesive spreading roller 1002 along the guide rail 1003 to rotational movement of the adhesive spreading roller 1002, or vice versa. In the bookbinding machine 10 according to the present invention, the chain has preferably been placed behind the way of movement of the pivotable holder arm 22 such that the pivotable holder arm 22 can be turned into the loading position.
  • A bookbinding sequence is explained with reference to FIG 4 - 14. The pivotable support arm22 is pivoted to loading position (FIG 4). Then a book cover 500 is placed against support 21 (FIG 5) such that the spine of the book cover 500 comes to spine rest 29. Then a staple of sheets 501 is placed onto the book cover 500 (FIG 6) and the lateral edges 502 may be aligned. Also the free side edge 503 may be aligned (FIG 7). Then the pivotable support arm 22 is pivoted to closed position (FIG 8) and moved to locked position (FIG 9) by rotating the wheel 25 from the knob 28. The direction of rotation can be chosen so that rotation to the counterclockwise direction moves the pivotable support arm 22 from the closed to locked position, and rotation in the opposite direction moves pivotable suppot arm 22 from the locked to closed position. Alternatively, it is possible to choose the direction of the thread 23, 27 so that the direction of rotation must be reversed, i.e. clockwise rotation moves the support arm 22 from the locked to closed position and counterclockwise rotation moves the support arm 22 from the closed position to locked position.
  • Then the applying of adhesive is performed as with bookbinding machines known from the technical background, i.e. first turning the staple holder 20 to the gluing position, possibly roughening the spine edge 504, and spreading glue to the spine edge 504, after which the staple holder 20 is rotated to the initial position. This may be easily effected by back-and-forth movement of the lever 1007.
  • In the process before applying of adhesive, an effect of the improved staple holder 20 is that the spine edge 504 of the staple of sheets 502 may be aligned more comfortably than in the bookbinding devices known in the background art. This is partly due to the fact that the space under the staple holder of the background art devices is so limited that it may be difficult to see the position of the spine edge 504 correctly and thus position it correctly with regard to the book cover 500, and it is also difficult to use fingers in that area due to limited space. The staple holder however preferably needs to be located quite close to the spine edge 504 to avoid excessive fanning of the staple of sheets 501 when turning the staple holder and spreading adhesive with the roller.
  • After applying the adhesive, the book blank 550 is nipped. This is described in detail with reference to FIG 10 to 14. First, the pivotable support arm 22 is brought from the locked to closed position (FIG 10) and from the closed position to loading position (FIG 11). The book blank 550 is then closed (FIG 12), after which the nipping plate 30 is moved to press the book blank 550 close to the spine edge 504 of the sheets to ensure proper contacting of the adhesive at the spine region of the book blank. The nipping plate 30 may be moved, as explained in the background art patents that were incorporated by reference, with a back-and-forth movement caused by turning the lever 1007 back-and-forth. Then the book blank 13 may be rotated (FIG 13) and the nipping may be repeated. The book 560 is ready and may be removed (FIG 14) from the bookbinding device 10.
  • With the improved staple holder 20, also the nipping result may be improved since thanks to the "open configuration", not only the positioning of the book blank 550 in the staple holder 20 can be controlled visually, but also the nipping event will be visible to the user of the machine. In this manner, incorrectly nipped books which may be visually disturbing, may be avoided with less practice of the user of the bookbinding device.
  • The testing carried out by the applicant shows that in both aligning phase (steps before spreading adhesive) and in the nipping phase (steps after spreading adhesive) increased productivity of the bookbinding machine 10. It was also possible to obtain good quality bindings with no visually disturbing incorrectly nipping also with users that had no or at most a few hours of practical training. This is believed to be a significant improvement to productivity and user comfort.
  • The invention should not be understood to be limited only by the below claims, but the invention is to be understood to include all their legal equivalents and the combinations of the embodiments presented.

Claims (16)

  1. A bookbinding machine (10) comprising:
    - a frame, comprising a guide rail (1003), and an adhesive tank (1001) -the adhesive preferably being or comprising heated PUR or melt EVA- that is movable back and forth along the guide rail (1003); and
    - an adhesive spreader roller (1002), having a patterned adhesive collection surface and arranged below the adhesive tank (1001) such that rotation of the roller (1002) about its longitudinal axis captures adhesive from the tank (1001) onto the adhesive collection surface and, when the adhesive on the adhesive collection surface is in contact with a spine edge (504) of a staple (501) of sheets that is to be bound to a book, spreads the adhesive onto the spine edge (504);
    and wherein:
    the bookbinding machine (10) further comprises a rotatable staple holder (20) which is suitable for receiving a staple (501) of sheets, the staple holder (20) comprising a pivotable holder arm (22) that in a first position is in a loading position to facilitate placing of the staple (501) of sheets to the holder (20), and in a second position is in a closed position.
  2. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising: comprises a brake (IV-IV) arranged to slow the rotational movement of the pivotable holder arm (22) .
  3. The bookbinding machine (10) of claim 2, wherein: the brake (IV-IV) comprises segments i) with increased friction in the rotational direction and/or ii) to which the pivotable holder arm (22) imparts momentum.
  4. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein: the pivotable holder arm (22) in its loading position is turned over the vertical line (y), such that the pivotable holder arm (22) remaining open is facilitated by gravity, the turning over angle (α) being preferably between -93 to -105 degrees from the horizontal line, more preferably
    between -94 and -100 degrees from the horizontal line (x), and most preferably essentially about -95 degrees from the horizontal line (x), or between 93 to 105 degrees from the horizontal line, more preferably between 94 and 100 degrees from the horizontal line (x), and most preferably essentially about 95 degrees from the horizontal line.
  5. The bookbinding machine according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein: the bookbinding machine (20) comprises a means (25, 28, 27, 23, III) to change the pivotable holder arm (22) from a closed position to a locked position and vise versa, preferably such that the pivotable holder arm is moved in front-back direction from front to back and from back to front, respectively, preferably such that both ends of the pivotable holder arm (22) move in a synchronized manner.
  6. The bookbinding machine according to claim 5, wherein: the means (25, 28, 27, 23, III) comprise threaded positions at both ends of the pivotable holder arm (22) that are arranged to run along a thread (23, 27), preferably such that their movement along the thread (23, 27) is controlled, advantageously in form-locking manner.
  7. The bookbinding machine (10) according to claim 6, wherein: the thread (23, 27) is an acme screw thread.
  8. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims 5 to 7, wherein: the means (25, 28, 27, 23, III) is manually drivable, such as by rotating a knob (28) or wheel (25), preferably such that the manual drive causes the threaded positions to run along the thread (23, 27) at both ends of the pivotable holder arm (22), preferably in a synchronous manner, advantageously implemented using a torque transmitting member (161, 162, 184), such as gears or toothed wheels and a chain.
  9. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims 5 to 8, wherein: the means (25, 28, 27, 23, III) is drivable by an electric motor (163), preferably in a form-locked manner, most preferably by using a torque transmitting member (161, 162, 184) such as gears or toothed wheel and a chain, preferably such that the electric drive causes the threaded positions to run along the thread (23, 27) at both ends of the pivotable holder arm (22), preferably in a synchronous manner.
  10. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, or advantageously according to claim 9, further comprising: a protective cover (1008) -that preferably is transparent or partially transparent- adapted to cover at least the adhesive spreading roller (1002), connected to a position switch such that when the cover (100) is closed, the position switch is configured to close a control circuit, such as by closing a normally open connector, advantageously so that the bookbinding machine (10) also comprises a recess or opening (1010) for accommodating the pivotable holder arm (22) in its loading position, the protective cover (1008) being located at the recess or opening (1010) or so that it covers the recess or opening (1010), such that the cover (1008) must be opened to change the pivotable holder arm (22) from closed or locked position to loading position, and preferably also such that when the pivotable holder arm (22) is in the loading position, it may prevent the protective cover (1008) from being closed.
  11. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, preferably in combination with claim 9, further comprising: a number of push buttons (142, 143) configured to activate a book glueing sequence, advantageously so that a number of electric motors is activated.
  12. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising: a support structure, such as drive housing (150), adapted to keep the pivotable holder arm (22) at an elevated position such that the pivotable holder arm (22) leaves at least 1 to 2 cm, preferably at least 2 cm free space under it when in closed and/or locked position.
  13. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein: the frame comprises a recess or opening (1010) for accommodating the pivotable holder arm (22) in its loading position.
  14. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising: a linear-rotational movement conversion means, such as a chain and gears or toothed wheels, that convert a linear movement of the adhesive tank (1001) and/or the adhesive spreading roller (1002) along the guide rail (1003) to rotational movement of the adhesive spreading roller (1002), or vice versa, and wherein the chain has been placed behind the way of movement of the pivotable holder arm (22) such that the pivotable holder arm (22) can be turned into the loading position.
  15. The bookbinding machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein: in a first rotational position of the rotatable staple holder (20), the spine edge (504) of the staple (501) of sheets placed in the staple holder (20) is in a position along which the adhesive collection surface will move when the adhesive spreader roller (1002) moves along the guide rail (1003) rotating the glue spreading roller (1002) such that the roller (1002) in contact with the spine edge (504) of the staple spreads adhesive to the spine edge (504), and in a second rotational position, the spine edge of the staple (504) is in a position to face a spine rest (29), for attaching a book cover (500) to the staple (501) to which adhesive has been spread, to make a book blank (550) .
  16. The bookbinding machine () according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising: a nipping plate () movable back-and-forth in the front-back direction and arranged to go underneath of the pivotable holder arm () that is in the closed position or locked position.
