Definitions
- the invention relates generally to production of fiber webs and to winding of fiber webs, especially in a winder of a slitter-winder.
- the invention relates to a winder according to the preamble of the independent winder claim.
- fiber webs e.g. paper and board webs
- fiber web production lines typically comprise an assembly formed by a number of the devices and the machines arranged consecutively in a process line.
- a typical production line for fiber web comprises a forming section comprising a head box and a wire section, a press section and a drying section and a reel-up.
- the production line can further comprise other sections and devices for treatment and/or finishing the fiber web, for example a sizer, a coating device, a calender.
- the production and treatment line also typically comprises at least one slitter-winder for forming customer rolls as well as a roll packaging apparatus. In present days running speeds of fiber web production lines, especially for certain fiber web grades for example for fluting and liner web grades, are so high that two slitter-winders are needed for slitting and winding the fiber web produced in the fiber web production lines.
- a fiber web completing in the fiber web production line is reeled by a reel-up around a reeling shaft i.e. a reel spool into a parent roll the diameter of which can be more than 5 meters and the weight more than 160 tons.
- the purpose of reeling is to modify the fiber web manufactured as planar and continuous to a more easily processable form.
- the continuous process of the fiber web machine breaks for the first time and shifts into periodic operation.
- Reel-ups are thus used in fiber web production for reeling the fiber web coming from the fiber web production line into a parent roll, but reel-ups are also used to reel fiber web coming from a coating machine, a calender or a corresponding finishing device.
- the fiber web wound in the reel-up onto the parent roll is full-width so it must be slit in longitudinal direction into partial webs with suitable width and the partial webs are wound to partial fiber web rolls (customer rolls) with suitable length of fiber web and/or of suitable diameter for the customers.
- the slitting and winding take place as known from prior art in an appropriate separate machine i.e. in a slitter-winder.
- Slitter-winders comprise an unwinder, in which the parent roll is unwound, a slitting section, in which from the parent roll unwound fiber web is slitted, i.e. cut in longitudinal direction, to partial webs with desired widths, and a winding section for winding the customer rolls.
- winding devices of different types are employed, for example multistation winders and two-drum winders.
- winding with a shaft without cores or together with cores can be employed in the winding of a fiber web into customer rolls on a slitter-winder.
- the fiber web is guided from the unwinding via guide rolls to the slitting section where the fiber web is slit into partial webs which are further guided either from above or from below to the winding roll/rolls of the winding stations to be wound up onto cores into customer rolls. Adjacent partial webs are wound up on different sides of the winding roll / on different winding rolls.
- Multistation winders have one to three winding rolls and in them each partial web is wound to a partial web roll in its own winding station. During winding a winding nip is formed between the winding roll and the partial web rolls to be wound.
- the partial webs are wound around winding cores supported by two winding drums to customer rolls via a nip between the winding drums and the customer being formed.
- a belt arrangement i.e. a so-called set of belt rolls with belt loop or belt loops located around two guide rolls can be used as the winding drum.
- a winding nip is formed between the winding drums and the customer rolls wound.
- the parent roll is unwound in an unwinding section in at least one unwinder, the full-width fiber web is slit on the slitting section into several narrower partial fiber webs (partial webs), which are wound up on a winding section around winding cores into customer rolls.
- partial webs partial fiber webs
- a set change is performed, in which the partial webs are cut in cross-direction. Tails of the partial webs i.e.
- trailing ends of the cut partial webs are attached onto the surface of the fiber webs on the surface of customer rolls in the set change by applying onto the surface of the fiber web running towards the customer rolls adhesive, which then attaches the tails onto the surface of the customer rolls.
- the complete customer rolls i.e. the so-called set is removed from the winder and new cores for winding the next set of the customer rolls are set to the winder, after which the process is continued with the winding of the next set of the customer rolls.
- a rider roll unit located above the customer rolls is used to load and/or support the customer rolls during winding.
- the rider roll extends longitudinally over the length of the set of the customer rolls, i.e. in cross direction in respect of the machine direction and is supported typically by means of hydraulic cylinders or screw jacks.
- the rider roll beam extends longitudinally over the length of the rider roll.
- the rider roll beam is attached at each of its ends to an end carriage, which is movably supported on vertical or in respect of the vertical direction inclined guides of the frame structure of the winder to move the rider roll beam and the rider roll.
- the attachment between the rider roll beam and the end carriage has been typically constructed by means of bushings, which allow movement in axial direction.
- bushings typically rubber bushings or articulation bearings have been used as the bushings.
- the use of bushings is based on mechanical need of inclined position of the rider roll beam due to the sometimes-occurring inclined diameter profile of the set of the customer rolls.
- Vertical stiffness and vertical natural frequency of a rider roll beam is defined by the stiffness of the loading hydraulic cylinders.
- Stiffness in machine direction (horizontal direction perpendicular to the cross direction) and natural frequency in machine direction in turn are mainly defined by stiffness of the rider roll beam and stiffness of the attachment between the rider roll beam end and the end carrier. Too low stiffness in machine direction may cause structural damage, especially in case of inclined diameter profile in longitudinal direction of the set of the customer rolls.
- the bushings used in the from the prior art known attachment constructions are very slack and within a bushing considerably movements occurs.
- the slackness of the attachment bushings between the rider roll end and the end carrier decrease the natural frequency in machine direction significantly, which has a negative effect on vibration situation as the set of customer rolls deforms due to increased time needed to pass the natural frequency area.
- natural frequencies have a significant effect on vibrations occurring in the winder. The vibrations may cause decreased quality, need to slow down the production to avoid harmful vibration frequencies etc., in worst cases due to resonating vibrations customer rolls may even bounce off the winder causing significant danger to working personnel and damages to nearby structures, not to mention losses in production due to damaged customer rolls and caused break time to correct the situation.
- An object of the present invention is to create a winder, especially suitable for slitter-winders, in which the disadvantages and problems caused by from prior art known support arrangements of rider roll beams of winders are eliminated or at least minimized.
- a further object of the present invention is to create a winder comprising a rider roll, in which the disadvantages and problems relating to vibration and natural frequency properties of from prior art known support arrangements of rider roll beams are eliminated or at least minimized.
- a main object of the present invention is to provide a solution to this need.
- the winder according to the invention is mainly characterized by what is presented in the characterizing part of the independent winder claim.
- Advantageous features and embodiments of the invention are defined in dependent claims.
- winding drum is used for simplicity when referring to a support roll/set of support rolls of the winder i.e. including both the meanings of a winding drum and a set of belt rolls.

- one resilient plate mounting in upper part of the area and the other resilient plate mounting in lower part of the area is provided.
- the resilient plate mounting extends substantially over the whole width of the attachment area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam.
- thickness of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 2 - 8 mm. This provides for good stiffness properties in machine direction and slackness properties in other directions.
- height of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 100 - 500 mm and width of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 200-500 mm, whereby a sturdy and reliable mounting is achieved.
- material of the resilient plate or of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is spring steel or quenched and subsequently drawn steel or other high strength or ultra-high strength steel.

- yield strength of the resilient plate or of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is at least 700 MPa, depending on the thickness of the resilient plate/the set of resilient plates. This provides for good stiffness properties in machine direction and slackness properties in other directions.
- slackness providing support of the rider roll beam is constructed by resilient plate mounting between the rider roll beam end and the end carrier.

Description
- The invention relates generally to production of fiber webs and to winding of fiber webs, especially in a winder of a slitter-winder. The invention relates to a winder according to the preamble of the independent winder claim.
- It is known that fiber webs, e.g. paper and board webs, are manufactured in devices and machines which together constitute a fiber web production line, which can be hundreds of meters long. As known from the prior art in fiber web production lines typically comprise an assembly formed by a number of the devices and the machines arranged consecutively in a process line. A typical production line for fiber web comprises a forming section comprising a head box and a wire section, a press section and a drying section and a reel-up. The production line can further comprise other sections and devices for treatment and/or finishing the fiber web, for example a sizer, a coating device, a calender. The production and treatment line also typically comprises at least one slitter-winder for forming customer rolls as well as a roll packaging apparatus. In present days running speeds of fiber web production lines, especially for certain fiber web grades for example for fluting and liner web grades, are so high that two slitter-winders are needed for slitting and winding the fiber web produced in the fiber web production lines.
- In fiber web production lines, the manufacture of the fiber web takes place as a continuous process. A fiber web completing in the fiber web production line is reeled by a reel-up around a reeling shaft i.e. a reel spool into a parent roll the diameter of which can be more than 5 meters and the weight more than 160 tons. The purpose of reeling is to modify the fiber web manufactured as planar and continuous to a more easily processable form. On the reel-up located in the main fiber web production line, the continuous process of the fiber web machine breaks for the first time and shifts into periodic operation. Reel-ups are thus used in fiber web production for reeling the fiber web coming from the fiber web production line into a parent roll, but reel-ups are also used to reel fiber web coming from a coating machine, a calender or a corresponding finishing device.
The slitting and winding take place as known from prior art in an appropriate separate machine i.e. in a slitter-winder. Slitter-winders comprise an unwinder, in which the parent roll is unwound, a slitting section, in which from the parent roll unwound fiber web is slitted, i.e. cut in longitudinal direction, to partial webs with desired widths, and a winding section for winding the customer rolls. In winding sections of slitter-winders winding devices of different types are employed, for example multistation winders and two-drum winders. As known in the prior art, also winding with a shaft without cores or together with cores can be employed in the winding of a fiber web into customer rolls on a slitter-winder. On slitter-winders of the multistation winder type, the fiber web is guided from the unwinding via guide rolls to the slitting section where the fiber web is slit into partial webs which are further guided either from above or from below to the winding roll/rolls of the winding stations to be wound up onto cores into customer rolls. Adjacent partial webs are wound up on different sides of the winding roll / on different winding rolls. Multistation winders have one to three winding rolls and in them each partial web is wound to a partial web roll in its own winding station. During winding a winding nip is formed between the winding roll and the partial web rolls to be wound. In the two-drum winders the partial webs are wound around winding cores supported by two winding drums to customer rolls via a nip between the winding drums and the customer being formed. In the two-drum winders also a belt arrangement i.e. a so-called set of belt rolls with belt loop or belt loops located around two guide rolls can be used as the winding drum. During winding a winding nip is formed between the winding drums and the customer rolls wound.
- As known from the prior art, in the slitter-winder the parent roll is unwound in an unwinding section in at least one unwinder, the full-width fiber web is slit on the slitting section into several narrower partial fiber webs (partial webs), which are wound up on a winding section around winding cores into customer rolls. In the slitter-winder when the customer rolls reach desired length and diameter, a set change is performed, in which the partial webs are cut in cross-direction. Tails of the partial webs i.e. trailing ends of the cut partial webs are attached onto the surface of the fiber webs on the surface of customer rolls in the set change by applying onto the surface of the fiber web running towards the customer rolls adhesive, which then attaches the tails onto the surface of the customer rolls. When the customer rolls are completed, in the slitter-winder in the set change the complete customer rolls i.e. the so-called set is removed from the winder and new cores for winding the next set of the customer rolls are set to the winder, after which the process is continued with the winding of the next set of the customer rolls. These stages are repeated periodically until paper runs out of the parent roll in the unwinder, whereby a parent roll change is performed and the operation starts again as the unwinding of a next parent roll.
- In winders typically also a rider roll unit located above the customer rolls is used to load and/or support the customer rolls during winding. The rider roll extends longitudinally over the length of the set of the customer rolls, i.e. in cross direction in respect of the machine direction and is supported typically by means of hydraulic cylinders or screw jacks. The rider roll beam extends longitudinally over the length of the rider roll. The rider roll beam is attached at each of its ends to an end carriage, which is movably supported on vertical or in respect of the vertical direction inclined guides of the frame structure of the winder to move the rider roll beam and the rider roll. The attachment between the rider roll beam and the end carriage has been typically constructed by means of bushings, which allow movement in axial direction. Typically rubber bushings or articulation bearings have been used as the bushings. The use of bushings is based on mechanical need of inclined position of the rider roll beam due to the sometimes-occurring inclined diameter profile of the set of the customer rolls. Vertical stiffness and vertical natural frequency of a rider roll beam is defined by the stiffness of the loading hydraulic cylinders. Stiffness in machine direction (horizontal direction perpendicular to the cross direction) and natural frequency in machine direction in turn are mainly defined by stiffness of the rider roll beam and stiffness of the attachment between the rider roll beam end and the end carrier. Too low stiffness in machine direction may cause structural damage, especially in case of inclined diameter profile in longitudinal direction of the set of the customer rolls. The bushings used in the from the prior art known attachment constructions are very slack and within a bushing considerably movements occurs. The slackness of the attachment bushings between the rider roll end and the end carrier decrease the natural frequency in machine direction significantly, which has a negative effect on vibration situation as the set of customer rolls deforms due to increased time needed to pass the natural frequency area. It should be noted that natural frequencies have a significant effect on vibrations occurring in the winder.
- There is a significant need to create a in machine direction stiff and in other directions slackness providing support of a rider roll beam of a winder. Therefore, a main object of the present invention is to provide a solution to this need.
- To achieve the above-mentioned objects and those which come out later, the winder according to the invention is mainly characterized by what is presented in the characterizing part of the independent winder claim. Advantageous features and embodiments of the invention are defined in dependent claims.
- In this description and the claims, the term winding drum is used for simplicity when referring to a support roll/set of support rolls of the winder i.e. including both the meanings of a winding drum and a set of belt rolls. Likewise the term rider roll unit is referring to units comprising a rider roll, typically formed of segmented rolls, and a rider roll beam.. Furthermore in this description, partial webs being wound in the winder and web rolls, customer rolls, being formed are referred to, according to context, either in singular or plural but meaning all partial webs and customer rolls handled in the winder.
- According to the invention in the winder customer rolls are wound of partial webs of a slitted fiber web, which winder comprises at least one winding drum, a frame comprising guides, which guides are vertical or +/- 20 degrees inclined in respect of the vertical direction, and a rider roll unit, which rider roll unit comprises a rider roll, a rider roll beam supporting the rider roll and extending between two ends, two end carriers supporting the two ends of the rider roll beam and located movably on the guides, wherein the ends of the rider roll beam are attached to the end carriers by resilient plate mountings.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plate mounting comprises at least one resilient plate.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plate mounting comprises more than one resilient plates formed as a set of resilient plates.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plate is attached at its upper and lower edges between the end of the rider roll beam and the end carriage by a pair of attachment means.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plate is attached removably to the attachment means.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plates have similar dimensions.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention in vertical direction of area between opposite surfaces of the end carrier and of the end of the rider roll beam at least two resilient plate mountings are located.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention one resilient plate mounting in upper part of the area and the other resilient plate mounting in lower part of the area.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention the resilient plate mounting extends substantially over the whole width of the attachment area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention thickness of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 2 - 8 mm. This provides for good stiffness properties in machine direction and slackness properties in other directions.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention height of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 100 - 500 mm and width of the resilient plate or of the set of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is 200-500 mm, whereby a sturdy and reliable mounting is achieved.
- According to an advantageous feature of the invention material of the resilient plate or of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is spring steel or quenched and subsequently drawn steel or other high strength or ultra-high strength steel. Minimum tensile strength for high strength steels is about 550 MPa and for ultra-high strength steels about 780 MPa. This provides for good stiffness properties in machine direction and slackness properties in other directions. According to an advantageous feature of the invention yield strength of the resilient plate or of the resilient plates in the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is at least 700 MPa, depending on the thickness of the resilient plate/the set of resilient plates. This provides for good stiffness properties in machine direction and slackness properties in other directions.
- According to one advantageous aspect of the invention in the winder in machine direction stiff and in other directions slackness providing support of the rider roll beam is constructed by resilient plate mounting between the rider roll beam end and the end carrier. The resilient plate mounting provides stiffness in machine direction due to increased stiffness of the attachment between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam. Thus, the natural frequency in machine direction can be increased over 5-6 Hz, which decreases time needed to pass resonance frequency of vibration to fractional part in view of the attachment known from prior art. The invention provides that high natural frequency is passed while the customer roll diameter is small, when the frequency changes faster compared to situation in which the customer roll diameter is large. Further, the deformation of the customer rolls decreases and thus, also the vibrations of the winder are decreased.
- According to one advantageous aspect of the invention the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam is constructed of a resilient plate or of a set of resilient plates comprising more than one resilient plates, advantageously 2- 5 resilient plates, forming together a plate pack. In the plate pack the plates have a slight movement between each other thus, providing friction effect, which enhances damping of vibrations. Advantageously, the resilient plate mounting extends substantially over the whole width of the attachment area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam.
- According to an advantageous aspect of the invention in vertical direction of area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam at least two resilient plate mountings are located, one in the upper area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam and the other in the lower area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam. Advantageously, the resilient plate mountings in the upper and in the lower area have similar dimensions.
- According to an advantageous aspect of the invention in one end of the rider roll beam in middle area between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam a further resilient plate mounting is located. Advantageously, in the middle area located resilient plate mounting is 90 degrees turned in view of the in the upper and in the lower area located resilient plate mountings. This provides a turning joint effect to the resilient plate mounting. The turning joint prevents the rider roll oscillation in cross direction. Stiffness is needed especially in machine direction, but it is important that also the cross direction is not too loose.
- According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the resilient plate /-s in the resilient plate mounting between the end of the rider roll beam and the end carrier are removable. Thus, resilient plate/-s for the resilient plate mounting can be changed for example to provide the mounting with different stiffness and/or slackness.
- By the invention and its advantageous features several advantages are achieved: Stiffness of the rider roll unit in machine direction increases due to increased stiffness of the resilient plate mounting between the end carrier and the end of the rider roll beam. Thus, the natural frequency in machine direction can be increased over 5Hz, which decreases time needed to pass resonance frequency of vibration to fractional part in view of the attachment known from prior art. Further, the deformation of the customer rolls decreases and thus, also the vibrations of the winder are decreased and further the disadvantages and problems due to vibrations are avoided or at least significantly decreased. Additional advantage is achieved as maintenance need is decreased in view of the prior art arrangements, in which the rocker bearings and the rubber bushings used, are parts that wear, and thus need to be changed regularly.
- Aspects of the invention, however, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of some example embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings and in the following the invention is described in more detail referring to the accompanying drawing, in which
