In the present embodiment, the vertical optical elements 45B each have a part-conical external profile. The vertical optical elements 45B each comprise a downward taper. The transverse optical elements 45A and the vertical optical elements 45 subdivide the second light input surface 37A into a plurality of second light input surfaces 45C. Each of the second light input surfaces 45C is substantially planar. A normal of each of the second light input surfaces 45C may be oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis X.
As shown in Figures 8 and 9, the second light guide 35 comprises an inboard section 47 and an outboard section 49. The inboard section 47 comprises a central aperture 51 . As shown in Figure 6, the first light guide 15 comprises a bifurcated section comprising upper and lower guide elements 53, 55. The upper and lower guide elements 53, 55 are arranged in a V- shaped configuration in the present embodiment. The second light guide 35 comprises upper and lower sections 57, 59. The upper and lower guide elements 53, 55 in the first guide 15 are configured to introduce light into the upper and lower sections 57, 59 of the second light guide 35. The outboard section 49 comprises an elongated profile arranged in a blade profile.
The second light guide 35 comprises an upper surface 61 and a lower surface 63. As shown in Figure 10, the upper surface 61 comprises a plurality of localised optical features 65 to provide localised illumination. The localised optical features 65 may comprise a projection or an aperture. The localised optical features 65 are illuminated by the light introduced into the second light guide 35 from the first light guide 15. Alternatively, or in addition, localised optical features (not shown) may be provided on the lower surface 63. As shown in Figure 10, the localised optical features 65 may be arranged in a pattern, for example comprising a broken or continuous line. The second output surface 39A does not incorporate any of the localised optical features 65. Rather, the second output surface 39A has a smooth finish.
The second light guide 35 comprises an exterior lighting element for the vehicle 5. The second light guide 35 extends along the longitudinal axis X and provides an increased illumination area. The optical components of the first and second light guides 15, 35 are operative to provide directed illumination along the longitudinal axis X. The light guide assembly 1 according to the present embodiment at least partially obfuscates the interior components, such as the light sources 7.
The light guide assembly 1 in the present embodiment has been described with particular reference to the transverse portion of the vehicle lamp assembly 3. The vehicle lamp assembly 3 comprises an outboard section which extends upwardly. The relative positioning of the light sources 9 are modified to introduce light into the outboard section of the first light guide 15. In particular, the light sources 9 are disposed to a side of the first light guide 15. In the present embodiment, the light sources 9 are disposed in an outboard location relative to the first light guide 15. Alternatively, or in addition, the light sources 9 may be disposed in an inboard location relative to the first light guide 15. The light sources 9 and the at least one collimator 21 are arranged to introduce the light into the first light guide 15 along a first optical axis Y1 extending parallel to the transverse axis Y. The first optical axis Y1 is shown in Figure 4. The optical modifier 23 is configured to direct the light in the first light guide 15 towards the first light output portion 19.
As shown in Figure 5, a translucent exterior lens 67 may be provided in front of the light guide assembly 1 .
The light guide assembly 1 has been described with reference to an arrangement in which the light sources 7 are disposed on a lower side of the first light guide 15. Alternatively, or in addition, the light sources 7 may be disposed on an upper side of the first light guide 15. The light sources 7 and the at least one collimator 21 may be disposed above the first light guide 15. The collimator 21 may be configured to introduce the light into the first light guide 15 along a first optical axis Z1 extending parallel to the vertical axis Z. The optical modifier 23 is configured to direct the light in the first light guide 15 towards the first light output portion 19. In a further variant, the light sources may be disposed at a rear portion of the first light guide 15. The collimator 21 may be configured to introduce the light into the first light guide 15 along an optical axis X1 extending parallel to the longitudinal axis X. The optical modifier 23 may be omitted in this arrangement.
It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications can be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the present application.
