In this way, the relevant information relative to the presence of a vehicle 101 stopped at or moving towards the road intersection 100 along the direction (A), is made available to the vehicles that are stopped or are approaching the same road intersection 100, along the other directions (B), (C), (D), et cetera.
- the signal transmitting apparatus 20 comprises a detector 22 which is installed in a fixed position, namely outside the first vehicle 101 and is configured to detect the presence of the first vehicle 101 along the first direction (A) and to send, in input to the first transceiver apparatus 10, the first signals Si indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 along the first direction (A).
- the detector 22 comprises a sensor selected from the group comprising, but not limited to, a proximity sensor, a speed sensor, a radar or any other sensor providing relevant information about the dynamical status of the vehicle.
- the detector 22, as well an any circuitry associated therewith can be mounted off board of the first vehicle 101 , at any suitable position relative to the vehicle, for instance at the level of the road surface as illustrated in the example of figure 3, or on a side along the direction (A), e.g. on a pole 106, or elsewhere.
- the first signals Si indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 can be transmitted to the signal transceiver apparatus 10 by means of any suitable technology implemented by the type of detector 25 used, either wireless or wired depending on the specific application and/or needs.
- the first signal transmitting apparatus 20 is installed at least partially, preferably completely, on board of the first vehicle 101.

- Figure 2 illustrates a method 200 for preventing road collisions at a road intersection 100, according to the invention, which can be executed for example by the various parts of the system 1 previously described.
- the method 200 comprises at least the following steps:
- - 210 transmitting, for example by means of a first signal transmitting apparatus 20, one or more first signals Si indicative of the dynamical status of a first vehicle 101 approaching the road intersection 100 along a first direction (A) leading to the road intersection 100; - 220: emitting, for example by means of a signal transceiver apparatus 20 which is installed at or close to said road intersection 100 and based on the transmitted one or more first signals Si, one or more first light signals LSi carrying information indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 approaching the road intersection 100 along the first direction (A), at least towards a second vehicle 102 which is located along a second direction (B) different from the first direction (A), and leading to the road intersection (100); and, by means of a signal receiving apparatus 30 which is installed on board of said second vehicle 102:
- - 230 detecting, the one or more first light signals LSi; and then - 240: processing the one or more first light signals LSi detected extracting the information carried indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 located along the first direction (A).
- the step 220 of emitting comprises modulating the intensity of the one or more first light signals LSi to carry out information indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 approaching the road intersection 100 along the first direction (A).
- the step 240 of processing comprises demodulating the one or more first signals LSi and extracting the information carried indicative of the dynamical status of the first vehicle 101 approaching the road intersection 100 along the first direction (A).
- the method 200 comprises the further step 250 of generating, based on the information extracted from the processed one or more first light signals LSi, a control signal Sc suitable for triggering an action by a driver by of an automatic on-board control system of the second vehicle 102.
- control system 1 and method 200 can implement in term of steps each of the functionalities described in connection with the various parts of the system 1 , which are not hereby replicated and described again as part of the method 200, for the sake of conciseness.
- the use of visible light communication is efficient, highly reliable, easy to realize and at competitive costs.
- the first light signals LSi can be emitted precisely in a selected direction, and in particular only towards the recipient that needs to receive the relevant information, namely the second vehicle 102 which is the first one in proximity of the road intersection, thus inherently increasing the safety of communication; further, thanks to the intrinsic large width of the transmission band of such type of communication, relevant data are transferred at very high speed and processed at very low latencies.
- system 1 and method 100 thus conceived are susceptible of modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the inventive concept as defined in particular by the appended claims, and including any possible combination, either complete or partial or the embodiments described; for example, in connection to a specific application, one or more of the described apparatuses can be realized each as a whole, unique and stand-alone device, or some of the components can be positioned remotely from each other, e.g.
- the first traffic lights can be of any type other than pole-mounted, for instance they can be suspended above the central part of the road intersection 100;
- any light emitting source which might be used on board of a vehicle can be a light source additional to the headlights or backlights of the vehicle; for instance, the first light source can be any light source with sufficient modulation bandwidth.
- the various electronic devices previously described can be constituted by, or comprise, any suitable processor-based device, e.g.
- the electronic devices mounted on board of a vehicle can be part of the control system installed on-board of the vehicle itself, or each can be a separated unit specifically dedicated to the functionalities provided for it.
