Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a refrigerator which comprises a crisper with humidity control.
- The refrigerator comprises a cooling compartment wherein foodstuffs are stored, a freezing compartment which enables foods to be stored by being frozen, and a crisper which is disposed in the cooling compartment and wherein foodstuffs such as vegetables and fruits are stored. The crisper is separated from the cooling compartment inner volume by a crisper lid disposed thereon. In order to prevent the foodstuffs placed in the crisper from dehydrating and drying, the air flow between the crisper and the cooling compartment is enabled to remain at a limited level, hence the air in the crisper is enabled to be more humid than the cooling compartment. In the state of the art, humidity control mechanisms for adjusting the humidity level in the crisper are known. In the refrigerators, the crisper is generally located at the lower portion of the cooling compartment. A "zero degree compartment (drawer)" wherein zero degree (0°C) storage conditions are provided is disposed on the crisper. An insulation shelf is provided under the zero degree compartment, which separates said cold region from the crisper. Here it is aimed not only to insulate the zero degree compartment but also to prevent the crisper adjacent to said compartment from getting excessively cold; however, the thickness of said insulation shelf decreases the usable volume of the refrigerator.
- The Patent Application No. EP1811251(A2) relates to a temperature control method which is applied in a refrigerator which has temperature conditions independent of the cooling compartment.
- The Patent Application No. US2002104325(A1) relates to a refrigerator comprising a storage compartment with quick cooling feature.
- In the Patent No. EP0478122 (B1), a low temperature compartment is disclosed, which is disposed in a refrigerator cooling compartment and which is cooled by taking air from the freezing compartment.
- The aim of the present invention is the realization of a refrigerator comprising a crisper with humidity control wherein the foodstuffs are stored in proper humidity and temperature conditions and wherein the condensation on the inner surfaces of the closed volume is eliminated.
- The refrigerator realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention comprises a crisper which is located at the lower portion of the cooling compartment, and a crisper lid which is disposed on the crisper and which separates the inner environment of the crisper from the inner environment of the cooling compartment. The crisper lid which is in the form of a hollow rectangular prism has a humidity control mechanism on the front wall thereof. Air flow regulating structures for providing the humidity balance are provided inside the crisper lid. An insulation element is integrated under the upper cover of the crisper lid of the present invention, and said insulation element prevents the crisper from being affected from the low temperature conditions in the zero degree compartment disposed thereon, hence preventing the vegetables and fruits in the crisper from getting frozen.
- Inside the crisper lid, upper and lower air ducts extending longitudinally from back to front and a separator separating the air ducts are provided. On the rear wall of the crisper, upper inlet openings for providing cool air intake into the upper air duct and lower inlet openings for providing cool air intake into the lower air duct are provided. On the front wall of the crisper, outlet openings are provided, which are in fluid communication with the upper air duct and which enables the air flows in the upper and lower air ducts to be joined so as to be delivered into the cooling compartment. Thus, the cool and dry air is prevented from drying the vegetables and fruits. Moreover, condensation/dew is prevented from forming on the inner surfaces of the crisper lid and hence of the crisper, thus eliminating the risk of spoilage of vegetables and fruits due to falling water droplets.

- The refrigerator (1) comprises a cooling compartment (2) or fresh food compartment where foodstuffs and beverages are placed; a freezing compartment, a crisper (3) which is located at the lower portion of the cooling compartment (2); a crisper lid (4) which is disposed on the crisper (3) and which separates the inner environment of the crisper (3) from the inner environment of the cooling compartment (2); and a special storage compartment (5) or a "zero degree compartment" which is disposed on the crisper lid (4) in the cooling compartment (2) and wherein zero degree (0°C) storage conditions are provided.
- The crisper lid (4), which is in the form of a hollow rectangular prism, comprises a cover (6) which covers the upper side thereof; a front wall (7); a rear wall (8); two side walls; a humidity control mechanism (9) which is mounted to the front wall (7) thereof; and a perforated plate (10) which is disposed at the lower side of the cover (6) such that a gap remains between the cover (6) and the perforated plate (10), which faces the inner volume of the crisper (3) and which enables the humidity balance in the crisper (3) to be maintained by providing the discharge of humid air through the holes thereon.
- In the refrigerator (1) of the present invention, the crisper lid (4) comprises
- - the cover (6) whereon the special storage compartment (5) is disposed,
- - a support plate (11) which is fixed to the lower surface of the cover (6) such a gap remains therebetween, and
- - an insulation element (12) which is disposed in the gap between the cover (6) and the support plate (11), which is produced from thermally-insulating material, preferably polyurethane and which prevents the crisper (3) from being affected from the lower temperatures of the special storage compartment (5).
- The crisper lid (4) enables the foodstuffs in the crisper (3) to be kept fresh for a long time. The special storage compartment (5) is provided on the crisper lid (4). The inner volume of the special storage compartment (5) is kept at approximately zero degree (0°C). The insulation element (12) is placed into the gap between the cover (6) and the support plate (11) so as to be integrated into the crisper lid (4). Due to the humidity control mechanism (9) provided on the front wall (7) of the crisper lid (4), there is a distance of approximately 40 mm between the cover (6) and the perforated plate (10), and this distance provides a volume suitable for the integration of the insulation element (12) into the inner volume of the crisper lid (4) and for regulation the air flow in the crisper lid (4) for a balanced humidity in the crisper (3).
- In an embodiment of the present invention, the crisper lid (4) comprises an upper air duct (13) and a lower air duct (14) with the perforated plate (10) at the base thereof, which are positioned one above the other in an adjacent manner and which extend longitudinally from back to front in the volume between the support plate (11) and the perforated plate (10); and a separator (15) which separates the upper air duct (13) and the lower air duct (14).
- The upper air duct (13) and the lower air duct (14) provide a controlled air flow over the perforated plate (10) in the crisper lid (4), thus keeping the flow rate and pressure of the air at a certain level, and condensation/dew is prevented from forming on the inner surfaces of the crisper lid (4) and of the crisper (3), thus eliminating the risk of spoilage of vegetables and fruits due to falling water droplets.
- In an embodiment of the present invention, the crisper lid (4) comprises a plurality of upper inlet openings (16) which are arranged on the rear wall (8), which are arranged aligned with the upper air duct (13) and which provide cool air intake into the upper air duct (13), and a plurality of lower inlet openings (17) which are arranged aligned with the lower air duct (14) and which provide cool air intake into the lower air duct (14).
- The crisper lid (4) further comprises a plurality of outlet openings (18) which arranged on the front wall (7), which are in air flow communication with the upper air duct (13) and which enable the air flows from back to front in the upper air duct (13) and the lower air duct (14) to be joined so as to be delivered into the cooling compartment (2).
- In another embodiment of the present invention, the crisper lid (4) comprises at least one flow joining hole (19) which is opened at the front side of the separator (15), which provides air flow connection between the lower air duct (14) and the upper air duct (13) and which enables the flow in the lower air duct (14) and the flow in the upper air duct (13) to be joined (by mixing the air flow in the lower air duct (14) with the air flow in the upper air duct (13)) so as to be delivered only to the upper air duct (13) and hence to the outlet openings (18) which are in fluid communication with the upper air duct (13).
- While passing over the flow joining holes (19), the air flowing in the upper air duct (13) towards the outlet openings (18) draws the air in the lower air duct (14) into the upper air duct (13) due to the Venturi effect (negative pressure). The air in the lower air duct (14) enters the upper air duct (13) by passing through the flow joining holes (19). The air flows in the lower air duct (14) and the upper air duct (13) are joined so as to be delivered into the cooling compartment (2) via the outlet openings (18). Similarly, the air flow in the crisper lid (4) draws the air in the crisper (3) through the perforations on the perforated plate (10) into the lower air duct (14) due to the Venturi effect, the air flow in the lower air duct (14) passes into the upper air duct (13) through the flow joining holes (19), as described above, and the humid air is discharged into the cooling compartment (2) through the outlet openings (18) at the front of the upper air duct (13), thus providing humidity balance in the crisper (3).
- The cover (6), the support plate (11), the separator (15) separating the upper air duct (13) and the lower air duct (14) and the perforated plate (10), which together constitute the crisper lid (4), are produced from plastic and joined by plastic welding method.
- By integrating the insulation element (12) into the crisper lid (4), the need for using an insulation shelf which occupies much space between the special storage compartment (zero degree compartment) (5) and the crisper (3) is eliminated. Thus, the usable volume of the cooling compartment (2) is increased. A controlled air flow is provided in the crisper lid (4) and hence in the crisper (3) while the cold and dry air is prevented from drying the vegetables and fruits, and the risk of the spoilage of the vegetables and fruits due to dew and condensation is eliminated.
