If the answer is negative and the radio receiver is not turned off at S38, however, the process returns to S34 to check if the selected radio program is currently available. When the selected radio program is currently available, the control unit 11 switches the IP radio program with the selected radio program. In other words, the control unit 11 stops receiving the IP radio program and then starts receiving the selected FM or DAB program.
- Fig. 5 shows an another example of the radio program management table containing information about DAB/FM radio programs.
- the reception quality field is replaced with an output quality filed which contains a signal strength of a radio program broadcast by a radio station 2 and the location field contains location information of the radio station 2.
- the control unit 11 of the radio receiver 1 may predict if the radio program is available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. In this way, the control unit 11 can obtain the second part of the list which contains radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route.
- a further another example of the radio program management table may contain the reception quality filed and the location field of Fig. 4 , and the output quality filed and the location field of Fig. 5 , based upon which the control unit 11 can obtain the second part of the list which contains radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route.
- Fig. 6 is a schematic diagram illustrating an effect of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 6(a) shows that a DAB program named "DAB_A" is available in a circled area only and that a radio receiver 1 placed in a vehicle 6 can detect the availability of DAB_A when the vehicle 6 arrives at a point "A".
- the radio receiver 1 can predetermine the availability of DAB_A at a point "B” even before the vehicle 6 approaches the point "A” and display the relevant information of DAB_A.

The first part contains currently available radio programs and the second part contains radio programs which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future, i.e. within the predefined area, e.g. within 10km or within 30 minutes running distance from a current spot where the
vehicle 6 is currently located. - The information about the currently available radio programs may be obtained using multiple tuners. In particular, as described above, the
radio receiver 1 may comprise a plurality ofDAB tuners 16 and a plurality of FM tuners 17. One of the plurality ofDAB tuners 16 may be used to receive a DAB radio program and anotherDAB tuner 16 may scan all channels to detect currently available DAB radio programs. The plurality of FM tuners 17 may work the same way. In this way, the control unit 11 may obtain the currently available radio programs on the spot where thevehicle 6 is currently located. -
Fig. 4 shows a radio program management table containing information about DAB/FM radio programs. The table ofFig. 4 may be stored in thememory 14 of theradio receiver 1. The second part of the list which contains the radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future, may be obtained using the table shown inFig. 4 . - Referring to
Fig. 4 , the table comprises a program ID field, a program name field, and an IP radio ID field, a reception quality field, and a location field. The program ID field contains identification information of a DAB/FM/MA radio program. The program name filed contains a program name of a corresponding radio program. The IP radio ID field contains location information, e.g. a uniform resource locator (URL) of an IP radio provider server providing an IP radio service which has the simultaneous broadcasting relationship with the corresponding radio program. The reception quality field contains quality information, e.g. a strength of reception signals of the corresponding radio program at a specific location. The strength of reception signals may be represented in the unit of dBuV/m for example. The location filed contains location information, e.g. a GPS coordinate, of the specific location where the strength of reception signals are measured. The strength of reception signals may be measured by theradio receiver 1 at a certain location while theradio receiver 1 is receiving a corresponding radio program, and the measured quality and the location information may be added into the table ofFig. 4 whenever theradio receiver 1 receives a radio program. Alternatively, reception quality information and location information may be provided beforehand by a relevant organization, e.g. https://fmscan.org. - Based on the reception quality information and the location information for a certain radio program included in the table of
Fig. 4 , the control unit 11 of theradio receiver 1 may predict if the radio program is available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. In this way, the control unit 11 can obtain the second part of the list which contains radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. - Further referring to
Fig. 3 , after displaying the list containing the first and second parts of available radio programs on thedisplay unit 13, the control unit 11 receives a user input through theinput unit 12 selecting one of the available radio programs at S33. Upon receiving the user input, at S34, the control unit 11 determines if the selected radio program is currently available, i.e. determining if the selected radio program belongs to the first part or the second part of the list. If the answer is positive, the control unit 11 controls theDAB tuner 16 or the FM tuner 17 to receive the selected DAB or FM radio program at S35. If the answer is negative, i.e. if the selected radio program is not currently available, at S36, the control unit 11 starts receiving an IP radio program which is a real-time streaming service of the selected radio program, i.e. which has the simultaneous broadcasting relationship with the selected radio program. The control unit 11 can receive the IP radio program using the IP radio ID included in the table ofFig. 4 . - At S37, the control unit 11 checks if a predefined time has passed to periodically update the available radio programs. If the answer is positive, the process returns to S32 to obtain and display an updated list of available radio programs.
-
Fig. 5 shows an another example of the radio program management table containing information about DAB/FM radio programs. Compared to the example ofFig. 4 , the reception quality field is replaced with an output quality filed which contains a signal strength of a radio program broadcast by aradio station 2 and the location field contains location information of theradio station 2. Based on the output quality information and the location information for a certain radio program included in the table ofFig. 5 , the control unit 11 of theradio receiver 1 may predict if the radio program is available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. In this way, the control unit 11 can obtain the second part of the list which contains radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. - A further another example of the radio program management table may contain the reception quality filed and the location field of
Fig. 4 , and the output quality filed and the location field ofFig. 5 , based upon which the control unit 11 can obtain the second part of the list which contains radio programs, which are not currently available, but will be available in the near future within the predefined area on the future route. -
Fig. 6 is a schematic diagram illustrating an effect of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.Fig. 6(a) shows that a DAB program named "DAB_A" is available in a circled area only and that aradio receiver 1 placed in avehicle 6 can detect the availability of DAB_A when thevehicle 6 arrives at a point "A". On the other hand, inFig. 6(b) , theradio receiver 1 can predetermine the availability of DAB_A at a point "B" even before thevehicle 6 approaches the point "A" and display the relevant information of DAB_A. If DAB_A is selected by a passenger of thevehicle 6 before thevehicle 6 arrives at the point "A," theradio receiver 1 starts receiving an IP radio service which has a simultaneous broadcasting relationship with DAB_A. In this way, as shown inFig. 6(c) , the available area of DAB_A can be virtually enlarged and thereby extending the scope of user selection. - While the invention has been described with reference to exemplary embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the invention. In addition, many modifications may be made to adopt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the invention without departing from the essential scope thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the invention is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed, but that the invention includes all embodiments falling within the scope of the claims.
