    TECHNICAL FIELD
  • The invention relates to eaves, roof seals, related methods, and a related kit comprising components.
  • TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Eaves (also referred to as roof edges) are a very common construction element. They are used, inter alia, to protect walls from rainwater. Some existing eaves comprise a bottom profiled section and a decorative panel which can be click-fitted to each other. The bottom profiled section ensures that the decorative panel is attached to the roof and the decorative panel determines the appearance of the eave. Such eaves can be produced in a simple manner and are easy to install. However, such eaves have the drawback that they are not necessarily waterproof in case of pouring rain. Moreover, these eaves do not absorb vibrations well. Also, the design of the eave has to be modified depending on the thickness of the roof covering for which it is used. Furthermore, small irregularities may result in a non-uniform clamping of the decorative panel onto the bottom profiled section.
  • US 4 403 458 discloses an eave having the features of the preamble of claim 1. J
  • SUMMARY
  • The invention and preferred embodiments thereof provide an eave (also referred to as roof edge) which is watertight, efficiently absorbs vibrations, is suitable for use with a roof covering of different thicknesses, and which allows uniform clamping, even when small irregularities are present.
  • Thus, an eave (roof edge) is provided herein comprising the features of claim 1.
  • In some embodiments, the flexible sealing piece comprises rot-proof adhesive tape of PVC foam.
  • In some embodiments, the decorative panel comprises aluminium.
  • In some embodiments, the decorative panel comprises the following components: a bottom end, a vertical part, a horizontal part, and a top end; wherein the bottom end is connected to the vertical part and makes an angle of 45° to 135°, for example an angle of 80 to 90°, with the vertical part; wherein the vertical part is connected to the horizontal part and the vertical part makes an angle of 80 to 90° with the horizontal part; and wherein the horizontal part is connected to the top end of the decorative panel.
  • In some embodiments, the top end of the decorative panel makes an angle of 45° to 90° with the horizontal part of the decorative panel.
  • In some embodiments, the vertical part of the decorative panel has a height of 30 to 400 mm, preferably a height of 60 to 70 mm.
  • In some embodiments, the horizontal part of the decorative panel has a length of 5 to 60 mm, for example of 17 to 52 mm.
  • In some embodiments, the top end of the decorative panel has a length of 10 to 20 mm.

  • Furthermore, this invention provides a kit of components for producing an eave as provided herein, the eave comprising a decorative panel, at least two bottom profiled sections, a flexible sealing piece, a corner piece and a decorative corner panel, wherein the decorative panel and the bottom profiled section are attachable to each other by click-fitting, wherein the bottom profiled section comprises a top end and wherein the flexible sealing piece is fittable between the top end of the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel.
  • Furthermore, the invention provides a method for fitting a roof seal to a roof, preferably a roof seal as described above, the method comprising the following steps:
    • optionally, installing an attachment surface on a wall, the attachment surface comprising an edge;
    • installing a bottom profiled section on the edge of the attachment surface or on a wall, the bottom profiled section comprising a bottom end, a horizontal bearing surface and a top end;
    • installing a roof covering on top of the attachment surface or on top of the wall, on top of the horizontal bearing surface, and on top of the top end of the bottom profiled section;
    • providing a decorative panel comprising a bottom end, a horizontal part and a top end;
    • installing a flexible sealing piece on the decorative panel; and,
    • click-fitting the decorative panel onto the bottom profiled section, wherein the flexible sealing piece is placed between the top end of the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel;
    wherein the method furthermore comprises forming corners in the eave of the roof seal, which in turn comprises the following additional steps:
    • providing a decorative corner panel and a corner piece with scaled-down ends;
    • pushing the scaled-down ends into spaces of bottom profiled sections;
    • fitting a sealing piece between the corner piece and a decorative corner panel;
    • installing the roof covering between the sealing piece and the corner piece; and,
    • click-fitting the decorative corner panel onto the bottom profiled sections.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • As used below in this text, the singular forms "a", "an", "the" include both the singular and the plural, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
  • The terms "comprise", "comprises" as used below are synonymous with "including", "include" or "contain", "contains" and are inclusive or open and do not exclude additional unmentioned parts, elements or method steps. The terms "comprise", "comprises" include the term "contain".
  • The enumeration of numeric values by means of ranges of figures comprises all values and fractions in these ranges, as well as the cited end points.
  • The term "approximately" as used when referring to a measurable value, such as a parameter, an amount, a time period, and the like, is intended to include variations of +/- 10% or less, preferably +/-5% or less, more preferably +/-1% or less, and still more preferably +/-0.1% or less, of and from the specified value, in so far as the variations apply in order to function in the invention disclosed herein.   • This invention provides an eave which comprises a decorative panel and a bottom profiled section. The decorative panel and the bottom profiled section are click-fitted to one another. The eave comprises a flexible sealing piece which makes the click-fit connection waterproof in case of pouring rain. Furthermore, the flexible sealing piece has the advantage that it absorbs the vibrations, improves the clamping of the click-fit connection, and that it makes one single eave design suitable for use with roof coverings of different thicknesses. An example of a suitable roof covering is roofing. Furthermore, this invention provides related roof seals, related kits comprising components, and related methods.
  • Alternatively or additionally, the eave as provided herein may be described as follows: the eave comprises a decorative panel and a bottom profiled section. The decorative panel is click-fitted onto the bottom profiled section. The bottom profiled section comprises a top end. A flexible sealing piece is arranged between the top end of the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel on one side and the decorative panel on the other side. In other words, the flexible sealing piece is clamped between the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel. In this way, an eave is provided which is waterproof in case of pouring rain, which absorbs vibrations, and which has a uniform click-fit connection between the decorative panel and the bottom profiled section.
  • Various materials are suitable for producing the flexible sealing piece. Preferably, rubbers and/or plastics are used. These substances are preferably deformable, rot-proof, and moisture-proof. In some embodiments, the flexible sealing piece comprises rot-proof adhesive tape of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) foam. Such flexible sealing pieces have a long service life and are readily recyclable.
  • A flexible sealing piece makes it possible to use roof coverings of different thicknesses and to guarantee a sealing in case of overlapping roof coverings.
  • In some embodiments, the decorative panel comprises aluminium. Such decorative panels are highly weatherproof. Additionally or alternatively, the decorative panel comprises zinc and/or PVC. In some embodiments, both the decorative panel and the bottom profiled section are made of PVC.
  • In some embodiments, the decorative panel comprises the following components: the bottom end (already mentioned above), a vertical part, a horizontal part, and a top end. The bottom end is connected to the vertical part. Also, the bottom end preferably makes an angle of 45° to 135°, for example an angle of 80° to 90°, with the vertical part. In this way, the bottom end of the decorative panel may efficiently interact with the bottom end of a bottom profiled section in order to form a click-fit connection. The vertical part of the decorative panel is connected to the horizontal part of the decorative panel and the vertical part preferably makes an angle of 80 to 90° with the horizontal part. The horizontal part is furthermore connected to the top end of the decorative panel. In this way, the horizontal part and/or the top end of the decorative panel form a structure which allows, in cooperation with the bottom end of the decorative panel, to click-fit the decorative panel onto the bottom profiled section.
  • In some embodiments, the top end of the decorative panel makes an angle of 45° to 90° with the horizontal part of the decorative panel. This makes it possible to form an efficient click-fit connection between the decorative panel and the bottom profiled section, and improves the watertightness in case of pouring rain as well as the drainage of water from the eave.
  • In some embodiments, the bottom profiled section comprises a horizontal bearing surface. The horizontal bearing surface allows the efficient installation of the bottom profiled section. Preferably, the horizontal bearing surface is connected to the top end of the bottom profiled section at two locations. A space is situated between the horizontal bearing surface and the top end of the bottom profiled section. This construction makes it possible to form an efficient click-fit connection between decorative panel and bottom profiled section. Also, it is possible to push a corner piece into the space, so that corners of the eave can readily be formed.
  • In some embodiments, the bottom profiled section furthermore comprises the following components: a bottom end, a vertical part, and a vertical support surface. The bottom end is connected to the vertical part. The vertical part is connected to the top end and to the horizontal bearing surface. The horizontal bearing surface is connected to the vertical support surface. Such bottom profiled sections may be installed efficiently.
  • Preferably, the bottom end of the horizontal bearing surface is formed in such a way that the trim is securely mechanically anchored after clamping with a clip. Preferably, the bottom profiled section is produced by means of extrusion.
  • In some embodiments, the vertical part of the decorative panel has a height of 30 to 400 mm, for example a height of 60 to 70, or 70 to 300 mm. The height of the vertical part of the decorative panel is the distance between the first end of the decorative panel and the horizontal part of the decorative panel.
  • In some embodiments, the horizontal part of the decorative panel has a length of 5 to 60 mm, for example of 17 to 52 mm. Preferably, the length of the horizontal part of the decorative panel is determined on the basis of the thickness of the roof covering, for example in the case of relatively thick roof coverings, a relatively long horizontal part of the decorative panel is used. The length of the horizontal part of the decorative panel is the distance between the vertical part of the decorative panel and the top end of the decorative panel.
  • In some embodiments, the top end of the decorative panel has a length of 10 to 20 mm.
  • In some embodiments, the space is formed as a triangle. Triangular corner pieces have the advantage that they can only be mounted in one way. This is in contrast with square and round corner pieces which can be mounted incorrectly.
  • In some embodiments, the space is formed as a triangle having at least one rounded corner. In some embodiments, the space is formed as a triangle having two rounded corners. In some embodiments, the space is formed as a triangle having three rounded corners. In other words, in some embodiments, the cross section of the space is in the form of a triangle having one, two, or three rounded corners. The rounded corners make it readily possible to push the corner pieces into the bottom profiled sections.
  • According to the invention, the eave comprises a corner piece and a decorative corner panel. The corner piece comprises two scaled-down ends. In some embodiments, the scaled-down ends are lower and thinner than the central part of the corner piece. Each of the scaled-down ends is pushed into a space of a bottom profiled section. In this way, it is efficiently possible to form corners of an eave.
  • Compared to conventional systems, the use of the corner piece halves the installation time of this profiled section.
  • In some embodiments, the eave comprises a flexible sealing piece which is arranged between the corner piece and the decorative corner panel. In this case, the flexible sealing piece has a similar effect as between the decorative panel and the bottom profiled section: here as well, it provides an improved sealing, damping, and clamping. A flexible sealing piece makes it possible to use roof coverings of different thicknesses and to guarantee a sealing in the case of overlapping roof coverings.
  • Furthermore, this invention provides a roof seal. The roof seal comprises an attachment surface, a roof covering, and an eave as provided herein. In some embodiments, the attachment surface is a multi-ply board.
  • In some embodiments, the horizontal bearing surface rests on the attachment surface, and the roof covering is arranged on top of the horizontal bearing surface and the top end of the bottom profiled section. Optionally, the bearing surface is attached to the attachment surface. This attachment comprises, for example, screws. In this way, the eave is efficiently made waterproof in case of pouring rain. Furthermore, no additional sealing strip has to be used when working in this manner.
  • In some embodiments, the roof covering has a thickness of 0.5 mm to 4 mm.
  • In some embodiments, the flexible sealing piece is situated between the roof covering and the horizontal part of the decorative panel.
  • In some embodiments, the flexible sealing piece is situated between the roof covering and the top end of the decorative panel.
  • The eave furthermore comprises a corner piece and a decorative corner panel. The corner piece comprises two scaled-down ends. The scaled-down ends are each pushed into a space of the bottom profiled section.
  • In some embodiments, a flexible sealing piece is arranged between the corner piece and the decorative corner panel.
  • In some embodiments, the eave furthermore comprises a joint cover which is click-fitted onto two adjacent decorative panels. In this way, the joint between the two adjacent decorative panels can be covered efficiently, thus improving the watertightness of the eave. If the eave comprises an angle, a joint cover is click-fitted onto the corresponding decorative corner panel and an adjacent decorative panel. In this way, the joint between the decorative corner panel and the decorative panel is covered, thus improving the watertightness of the eave.
  • Furthermore, this invention provides a kit of components for producing an eave as provided herein. The eave comprises a decorative panel, at least two bottom profiled sections, a flexible sealing piece, a corner piece and a decorative corner panel. The decorative panel and the bottom profiled section are attachable to each other by click-fitting. The bottom profiled section comprises a top end and the flexible sealing piece is fittable between the top end of the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel. Optionally, the kit comprises instructions for fitting a roof seal according to a method as provided herein.
  • Furthermore, this invention provides a method for fitting a roof seal on a roof. Preferably, the roof seal is a roof seal as provided herein. The method optionally comprises the step of installing an attachment surface on a wall. Both the wall and the attachment surface comprise an edge. A bottom profiled section is installed on the edge of the attachment surface or on the edge of the wall. The bottom profiled section comprises a bottom end, a horizontal bearing surface, and a top end. The roof covering is installed on top of the attachment surface, on top of the horizontal bearing surface, and on top of the top end of the bottom profiled section. Furthermore, a decorative panel is provided. A flexible sealing piece is provided on the underside of the decorative panel, so that the flexible sealing piece ends up above the top end of the bottom profiled section after installation. The decorative panel comprises a bottom end, a horizontal part, and a top end. The decorative panel is then click-fitted onto the bottom profiled section. Now, the flexible sealing piece is situated between the top end of the bottom profiled section and the decorative panel. In this way, the present roof seals can be fitted very efficiently.
  • The method of the invention further comprises forming corners in the eave of the roof seal. Furthermore, a decorative corner panel and a corner piece as described above are provided in these embodiments. The corners of the eave are formed by pushing the scaled-down ends of the corner piece into a space of a bottom profiled section and by click-fitting the decorative corner panel onto these bottom profiled sections. A flexible sealing piece is arranged between the corner piece and the decorative corner panel. The roof covering is installed between the sealing piece and the corner piece. In this way, a corner of an eave can be fitted efficiently.
  • EXAMPLES Example 1
  • The reader is referred to Fig. 1 by way of first example. Fig. 1 shows a cross section of an eave (100) according to an embodiment of the present invention. The eave (100) is mounted on a multi-ply board (200) which is, in turn, installed on a wall (300).
  • The eave (100) comprises a decorative panel (110) and a bottom profiled section (120). The decorative panel (110) comprises a bottom end (111), a vertical part (113), a horizontal part (114), and a top end (112), which are successively connected to each other. The bottom end (111) is connected to the vertical part (113) and the bottom end makes an angle of approximately 80 to 90° with the vertical part (113). The vertical part (113) is furthermore connected to the horizontal part (114) and the vertical part (113) makes an angle of approximately 80 to 90° with the horizontal part (114). The horizontal part (114) is connected to the top end (112) of the decorative panel (110) of the eave (100).
  • The bottom profiled section (120) comprises a bottom end (121), a vertical part (126), a top end (122), a space (123), a horizontal bearing surface (124), and a vertical support surface (125). The bottom end (121) is connected to the vertical part (126). The vertical part (126) is connected to the top end (122) and the horizontal bearing surface (124). The top end is connected to the horizontal bearing surface (124) at two locations. The horizontal bearing surface (124) is connected to the vertical support surface (125). A space (123) is situated between the horizontal bearing surface (124) and the top end (122). A corner piece can be placed in the space (123).
  • The bottom profiled section (120) of the eave (100) is placed between a multi-ply board (200) and a roof covering (400). An example of a suitable roof covering is roofing. The end of the roof covering (400) is situated in a space which is created between the decorative panel (110) and the bottom profiled section (120). In particular, the decorative panel (110) is click-fitted onto the bottom profiled section (120). In particular, the click-fit connection is formed by mechanical interaction between the bottom end (111) of the decorative panel and the bottom end (121) of the bottom profiled section on the one hand, and mechanical interaction between the horizontal part (114) / top end (112) of the decorative panel (110) and the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section (120) on the other.
  • The roof covering (400) and a flexible sealing piece (130) are situated between the decorative panel (110) and the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section. The flexible sealing piece (130) improves the watertightness of the eave (100), makes it possible to use the same decorative panel (110) and bottom profiled section (120), irrespective of the thickness of the roof covering (400), absorbs vibrations, and improves the strength of the click-fit connection between the decorative panel (110) and the bottom profiled section (120).
  • Example 2
  • The reader is referred to Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 by way of further example.
  • Fig. 2 shows a bottom view of a bottom profiled section (120). A corner piece (500) is pushed into the space (123) of the bottom profiled section (120). The corner piece (500) comprises ribs (510) which provide the corner piece with additional resistance to bending. The corner piece (500) furthermore comprises scaled-down ends (520). The scaled-down ends (520) are only a few millimetres lower and thinner than the central part (530) of the corner piece (500). The scaled-down ends (520) fit into the space (123) of the bottom profiled section (120). The difference in height and width between the central part (530) and the scaled-down ends (520) makes it possible to prevent a discontinuity at the transition between corner piece (530) and bottom profiled section (120). In this way, it is possible to support a decorative panel in an optimum manner along the entire length of the eave in which the decorative panel is used.
  • Fig. 3 comprises two panels. Panel A shows a bottom view of an eave (100). Panel B shows a top view of the eave (100). The eave (100) comprises a decorative panel (110) and a decorative corner panel (140). The decorative panel (110) is click-fitted onto a bottom profiled section (120). The decorative corner panel (140) comprises two ends which are each click-fitted onto a different bottom profiled section (120). A corner piece (500) connects the two bottom profiled sections (120) with each other in order to form a corner. A joint cover (600) is provided to improve the watertightness at the position where a decorative corner panel (140) and a decorative panel (110) touch each other.
  • The eave according to the present example comprises a flexible sealing piece between the decorative panel (110) and the bottom profiled section (120). Where the decorative corner panel (140) is positioned above the corner piece (500), a flexible sealing piece is positioned between the corner piece (500) and the decorative corner panel (140). Where the decorative corner panel (140) is positioned above a bottom profiled section (120), a flexible sealing piece is positioned between the decorative corner panel (140) and the bottom profiled section (120). The flexible sealing piece is not shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

Claims (15)

  1. An eave (100) comprising a decorative panel (110) and at least two bottom profiled sections (120), wherein the decorative panel (110) is click-fitted onto at least one of the bottom profiled sections (120);
    wherein the bottom profiled sections (120) comprise a top end (122); and,
    wherein a flexible sealing piece (130) is arranged between the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section (120) and the decorative panel (110) click-fitted thereto;
    characterized in that
    the eave furthermore comprises a corner piece (500) and a decorative corner panel (140);
    wherein the corner piece (500) comprises two scaled-down ends (520); and,
    wherein the scaled-down ends (520) are each pushed into a space (123) of a bottom profiled section (120).
  2. The eave according to Claim 1, wherein a flexible sealing piece (130) is arranged between the corner piece (500) and the decorative corner panel (140).
  3. The eave (100) according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the flexible sealing piece (130) comprises rot-proof adhesive tape of PVC foam and/or wherein the decorative panel comprises aluminium.
  4. The eave (100) according to any of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the decorative panel comprises the following components:
    a bottom end (111), a vertical part (113), a horizontal part (114), and a top end (112);
    wherein the bottom end (111) is connected to the vertical part (113) and makes an angle of 45° to 135°, for example an angle of 80 to 90°, with the vertical part (113);
    wherein the vertical part (113) is connected to the horizontal part (114) and the vertical part (113) makes an angle of 80 to 90° with the horizontal part (114); and,
    wherein the horizontal part (114) is connected to the top end (112) of the decorative panel (110).
  5. The eave (100) according to Claim 4, wherein the top end (112) of the decorative panel (110) makes an angle of 45° to 90° with the horizontal part (114) of the decorative panel.
  6. The eave (100) according to any of Claims 4 or 5, wherein the vertical part (113) of the decorative panel (110) has a height of 30 to 400 mm, preferably a height of 60 to 70 mm and/or wherein the horizontal part (114) of the decorative panel (110) has a length of 5 to 60 mm, for example of 17 to 52 mm and/or wherein the top end (112) of the decorative panel (110) has a length of 10 to 20 mm.
  7. The eave (100) according to any of Claims 1 to 6, wherein the bottom profiled section (120) comprises a horizontal bearing surface (124);
    wherein the horizontal bearing surface (124) is connected to the top end (122) at two locations; and,
    wherein a space (123) is situated between the horizontal bearing surface (124) and the top end (122);
    optionally wherein the bottom profiled section (120) furthermore comprises the following components:
    a bottom end (121), a vertical part (126), and a vertical support surface (125);
    wherein the bottom end (121) is connected to the vertical part (126);
    wherein the vertical part (126) is connected to the top end (122) and to the horizontal bearing surface (124); and,
    wherein the horizontal bearing surface (124) is connected to the vertical support surface (125).
  8. The eave according to Claim 7, wherein the space (123) is formed as a triangle, optionally wherein the space (123) is formed as a triangle having at least one rounded corner.
  9. A roof seal comprising a roof covering (400), an eave (100) according to any of Claims 1 to 8, and optionally an attachment surface (200).
  10. The roof seal according to Claim 9 wherein the bottom profiled section (120) comprises a horizontal bearing surface (124);
    wherein the horizontal bearing surface (124) rests on a wall (300) or on the attachment surface (200); and,
    wherein the roof covering (400) is arranged on top of the horizontal bearing surface (124) and the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section (120).
  11. The roof seal according to any of Claims 9 or 10 wherein the decorative panel comprises a horizontal part (114); and,
    wherein the flexible sealing piece (130) is situated between the roof covering (400) and the horizontal part (114) of the decorative panel (110); or,
    wherein the decorative panel comprises a top end (112); and,
    wherein the flexible sealing piece (130) is situated between the roof covering (400) and the top end (112) of the decorative panel (110).
  12. The roof seal according to any of Claims 9 to 11, wherein the roof covering (400) has a thickness of 0.5 mm to 4.0 mm.
  13. The roof seal according to any of Claims 9 to 11, furthermore comprising a corner piece (500) and a decorative corner panel (140);
    wherein the corner piece (500) comprises two scaled-down ends (520); and,
    wherein the scaled-down ends (520) are each pushed into a space (123) of a bottom profiled section (120);
    optionally wherein a flexible sealing piece (130) is arranged between the corner piece (500) and the decorative corner panel (140).
  14. A kit of components for producing an eave according to any of Claims 1 to 8, comprising a decorative panel (110), at least two bottom profiled sections (120), a flexible sealing piece (130), a corner piece (500), and a decorative corner panel (140);
    wherein the decorative panel (110) and the bottom profiled sections (120) are attachable to each other by click-fitting;
    wherein the bottom profiled sections (120) comprise a top end (122); and,
    wherein the flexible sealing piece (130) is fittable between the top end (122) of the bottom profiled sections (120) and the decorative panel (110).
  15. A method for fitting a roof seal to a roof, preferably a roof seal according to any of Claims 9 to 13, the method comprising the following steps:
    - optionally, installing an attachment surface (200) on a wall (300), the attachment surface comprising an edge;
    - installing a bottom profiled section (120) on the edge of the attachment surface (200) or on a wall (300), the bottom profiled section comprising a bottom end (121), a horizontal bearing surface (124) and a top end (122);
    - installing a roof covering (400) on top of the attachment surface (200) or on top of the wall, on top of the horizontal bearing surface (124), and on top of the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section (120);
    - providing a decorative panel (110) comprising a bottom end (111), a horizontal part (114) and a top end (112);
    - installing a flexible sealing piece (130) on the decorative panel (110); and,
    - click-fitting the decorative panel (110) onto the bottom profiled section (120), wherein the flexible sealing piece (130) is placed between the top end (122) of the bottom profiled section (120) and the decorative panel;
    wherein the method furthermore comprises forming corners in the eave of the roof seal, which in turn comprises the following additional steps:
    - providing a decorative corner panel (140) and a corner piece (500) with scaled-down ends (520);
    - pushing the scaled-down ends (520) into spaces (123) of bottom profiled sections (120);
    - fitting a sealing piece (130) between the corner piece (500) and a decorative corner panel (140);
    - installing the roof covering (400) between the sealing piece (130) and the corner piece (500); and,
    - click-fitting the decorative corner panel (140) onto the bottom profiled sections (120).
