Description
BAFFLE FOR FLUID STORAGE VESSEL AND METHOD OF INSTALLING THE BAFFLE
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to a baffle apparatus and to a method. Aspects of the invention relate to a baffle; to a fluid storage vessel; to a vehicle; and to a method of installing a baffle in a fluid storage vessel.
BACKGROUND
Vehicles having an internal combustion engine are provided with a fuel tank for storing fuel, such as diesel or gasoline. In use, dynamic movement of the vehicle may result in unwanted movement of the fuel within the vehicle fuel tank and this may result in unwanted side effects, including the generation of noise which may be audible within a vehicle cabin. A known technique for reducing this unwanted movement is to provide a baffle in the vehicle fuel tank. Traditionally baffles have been made from rigid materials and are usually formed as flat sheets, situated perpendicular to the direction of fluid flow. However, traditional blow manufacturing processes for fuel tanks do not allow for the insertion of additional components such as baffles during fabrication. To overcome these shortcomings, it is known to provide one or more service hatch in the vehicle fuel tank to install the baffle. However, to achieve effective baffling, requires a substantial baffle substructure to be inserted within a tank. The required baffle substructure may be larger than a viable service hatch and therefore cannot be inserted. The size and profile of the baffle may then be determined by the size of the service hatch and this may lead to a non-optimum or ineffective solution. Certain blow manufacturing techniques may allow insertion of the baffle into the fuel tank but these techniques are more complicated, typically requiring a split parison process.
It is against this background that the present invention has been conceived. At least in certain embodiments, the present invention seeks to overcome or ameliorate at least some of the shortcomings of the prior art apparatus. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Aspects of the present invention relate to a baffle; to a vehicle fuel tank; to a vehicle; and to a method of installing a baffle in a fluid storage vessel.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a baffle for a fluid storage vessel. The baffle comprises at least one cell open at an upper end and a lower end. The or each cell comprises a sidewall composed of a plurality of panels. Each panel of the sidewall is connected to an adjacent panel of the sidewall by one or more hinges configured
to enable the at least one cell to be collapsed to enable installation of the baffle in the fluid storage vessel. The panels may pivot or fold relative to each about said one or more hinge. The baffle may thereby be collapsed to enable insertion into the fluid storage vessel; and, once disposed in the fluid storage vessel, may be opened to an operative condition. The baffle may be provided in a collapsed state for insertion into the fluid storage vessel. The baffle may then be opened to an expanded state operative to impede movement of liquid within the fluid storage vessel. At least in certain embodiments, the baffle is intended to be installed in a fluid storage vessel disposed in a vehicle. The baffle may impede movement of the liquid within the fluid storage vessel resulting from dynamic movement of the vehicle.
The panels may be pivoted about said one or more hinge to collapse the at least one cell to enable the baffle to be inserted into the fluid storage vessel, for example through a service hatch or opening in the tank. Once in position, the baffle may be opened to the expanded state.
The baffle may be arranged in a generally upright position within the fluid storage tank. The at least one cell may extend vertically within the fluid storage tank. The lower end of the at least one cell may be disposed proximal to (or in contact with) the bottom of the fluid storage tank and the upper end of the at least one cell may be disposed proximal to (or in contact with) the top of fluid storage tank. Each cell has a longitudinal axis which is arranged substantially vertically in the fluid storage tank. When collapsed, the transverse sectional area of the at least one cell (i.e. the sectional area in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis) may be reduced or minimised. The sidewall of the at least one cell may be deformable. For example, the sidewall may be made of a flexible material. The sidewall may be formed from a resilient material. The plurality of panels may be formed integrally from said resilient material. The resilient material may bias the at least one cell to an open position such that the baffle is biased towards said expanded state. Once inserted into the fluid storage vessel, the baffle may resume its natural shape due to the resilient properties of the material. The resilient material can, for example be an elastomeric material, a rubberised compound, or a foam, which in its natural state exhibits the required profile/shape of the baffle.
The panels making up the sidewall may be deformable or may be rigid. The adjacent panels in said sidewall are connected to each other by one or more hinge. The adjacent panels may pivot or fold relative to each other along said one or more hinge. The one or more hinge may be disposed at a corner where adjacent panels are joined to each other. The one or more
hinge may be defined by the angular orientation of the adjacent panels relative to each other. For example, adjacent panels may be joined to form a corner having an included angle which is acute or obtuse. The sidewall may be predisposed to fold at the corner(s) formed between adjacent panels. The adjacent panels may be connected to each other by one or more live hinge. The live hinge may be formed integrally with the adjacent panels. The one or more live hinge may be formed at the corner(s) formed between adjacent panels. Alternatively, or in addition, the one or more live hinge may comprise an area of reduced thickness. The reduced thickness of each live hinge may provide a localised region of lower stiffness and surface strain to promote folding of the sidewall along a hinge line. This arrangement may provide improved durability of the hinge. In an alternative arrangement, the one or more hinge may each comprise a mechanical hinge assembly, for example comprising a hinge pin located in a barrel. In a further alternative, the one or more hinge may each comprise a resilient hinge member coupled to the adjacent panels. The hinge may be configured to bias the adjacent panels towards a determined angular position. The sidewall may comprise a plurality of said hinges configured to bias the at least one cell to an open position. The baffle may comprise a spring element and/or a locking mechanism. Furthermore, adjacent cells may be connected to each other by said hinge. Each cell may have a circular, elliptical or polygonal cross section. The panels forming the sidewall of the cell may each form a side of the polygon. The cell can, for example, have a cross section which is one of the following: a rectangle, a square, a rhomboid, and a parallelogram. Each cell may be in the form of an open cylinder or tube. A plurality of said panels may define the sidewall. The cylinder may have a circular, elliptical or polygonal cross-section.
The baffle may be configured to enable folding within itself. The at least one cell may comprise first, second, third and fourth panels. The first and second panels may be foldable inwardly into a position disposed adjacent to the third and fourth panels. The panels may then be folded such that the first and second panels are disposed against each other. This folding sequence may be performed for a first cell and then repeated for a second cell. The first cell may be at least partially nested in the second cell. The first and second panels in the second cell may be folded against the third and fourth panels of the first cell. The baffle may comprise a plurality of said cells. The cells may be arranged in a matrix. Each cell in the matrix may be connected to at least one other cell in the matrix. Adjacent cells in the matrix may be connected by said one or more hinge. The plurality of cells may be
collapsible into a nested or partially nested configuration for installation of the baffle in the fluid storage vessel.
One or more aperture may be formed in said sidewall of said at least one cell. The one or more aperture may be formed at or proximal to the lower end of cell. The one or more aperture may be arranged to establish a supply communication between an interior of the cell with the remainder of the fluid storage vessel. The one or more aperture may be formed by non-conformity of an upper or lower edge of the sidewall with a corresponding surface of the fluid storage vessel.
The baffle may be moulded, co-moulded or extruded, for example.
The baffle may include a fixing means for fixing the baffle in the fluid storage vessel. The fixing means may comprise one or more hook or fastener for fixing the baffle to the fluid storage vessel. The fixing means may be attached to the tank or baffle and engage the other in order to restrain the folding or movement of the baffle.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a baffle for a fluid storage vessel, the baffle comprising at least one cell open at an upper end and a lower end. The at least one cell comprises a sidewall made of a deformable material configured to enable the at least one cell to be collapsed to enable installation of the baffle in the fluid storage vessel.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a fluid storage vessel comprising a baffle as described herein, wherein the fluid storage vessel comprises an opening for inserting the baffle in a collapsed state, the baffle being disposed in the fluid storage vessel in an expanded state. The opening may be formed during fabrication of the fluid storage vessel, for example during blow moulding of the fluid storage vessel. The opening may be a storage or access opening, for example having a removable cap or closure member.
The lower end of the baffle may be disposed against a base of the fluid storage vessel; and/or the upper end of the baffle may be disposed against a top of the fluid storage vessel. The fluid storage vessel may be suitable for storing liquid. The fluid storage vessel may be adapted to be used in a vehicle, such as an automotive vehicle. For example, the fluid storage vessel may be a fuel tank for a vehicle. Alternatively, the fluid storage vessel may be
a container for windshield washer fluid, brake fluid or hydraulic fluid. The fluid storage vessel may be a container for urea (also known as carbamide) for a catalytic converter.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle comprising a fluid storage vessel as described herein.
According to a still further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of installing a baffle in a fluid storage vessel having an opening, the method comprising: inserting the baffle in a collapsed state through the opening; and then opening the baffle into an expanded state. The baffle may comprise at least one cell having a sidewall composed of a plurality of panels. The adjacent panels in the sidewall may be connected to each other by one or more hinge. The method may comprise fixing the baffle to the fluid storage vessel.
In some but not necessarily all examples of the present disclosure there is provided a baffle for a fluid storage vessel. The baffle may comprise at least one cell open at an upper end and/or a lower end. The or each cell may comprise a sidewall composed of a plurality of panels. Adjacent panels in the sidewall may be connected to each other by one or more hinge to enable the at least one cell to be collapsed for installation of the baffle in the fluid storage vessel.
In some but not necessarily all examples of the present disclosure there is provided a baffle for a fluid storage vessel, the baffle comprising at least one cell open at an upper end and/or a lower end. The at least one cell may comprise a sidewall made of a deformable material to enable the at least one cell to be collapsed for installation of the baffle in the fluid storage vessel.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A baffle 1 for a fuel tank 2 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the Figures 1 to 4. The vehicle fuel tank 2 in the present embodiment is a saddle-type tank having first and second compartment 3, 4 connected to each other by a bridge section 5. The vehicle fuel tank 2 has particular application in an automotive vehicle V, but the invention is not limited in this respect. In use, the baffle 1 helps to reduce sloshing of fuel within the vehicle fuel tank 2 to reduce the generation of noise. As described herein, the baffle 1 is formed from a resilient material, such as an elastomer, to enable the baffle 1 to be deformed from an expanded state to a collapsed state. The baffle 1 can, for example, be moulded or extruded from an elastomeric material. The baffle 1 comprises a plurality of cells 6 each having a generally rhomboidal cross section (when the baffle 1 is in said expanded state), as shown in Figure 2. The cells 6 each have an upper end 7 and a lower end 8 which are both open. More particularly, each cell 6 comprises a sidewall 9 formed from a plurality of panels 10 arranged to form an open cylinder or tube. In the present embodiment the sidewall 9 of each cell 6 is formed by a first panel 10-1 , a second panel 10-2, a third panel 10-3 and a fourth panel 10-4. Adjacent panels 10 in each cell 6 are connected to each other to form one or more live hinge 1 1 . The live hinge 1 1 may is formed integrally with the sidewall 9. In particular, the sidewall 9 is predisposed to fold along said one or more live hinge 1 1 . The one or more live hinge 1 1 is formed at the junction between the adjacent panels 10. In the present embodiment, the hinges 1 1 are configured
such that the sidewalls 9 are biased towards the expanded state in which each cell 6 has a rhomboidal section. In the expanded state, adjacent panels 10 are angularly offset from each other to form a series of corners having an included angle which is less than 180° (typically between 45° and 135°). The one or more hinge 1 1 is thereby defined at the corners of the cell 6 where the adjacent panels 10 are joined together. The cells 6 each have a lower edge 12 for abutment against a lower wall 13 of the vehicle fuel tank 2 and an upper edge 14 for abutment against an upper wall 15 of the vehicle fuel tank 2. As shown in Figure 3, one or more aperture 16 is formed in the sidewall 9 at the lower end 8 of each cell 6 to establish fluid communication between an interior of the cell 6 and the remainder of the vehicle fuel tank 2.
The cells 6 are arranged in a repeating pattern to form a matrix of cells 6. The cells 6 are arranged in a plurality of rows 17 to form an interlocking configuration. In the present embodiment, the baffle 1 comprises a first row 17-1 , a second row 17-2 and a third row 17-3. The first row 17-1 consists of three (3) cells 6; the second row 17-2 consists of two (2) cells 6; and the third row 17-3 consists of three (3) cells 6. The cells 6 in the first row 17-1 are not connected to each other to facilitate folding of the baffle 1 to said collapsed state. The cells 6 in the first row 17-1 are connected to adjacent cells 6 in the third row 17-3. Adjacent cells 6 within the third row 17-3 are connected to each other. The cells 6 in the second row 17-2 are formed by the voids between the sidewalls 9 of the cells 6 in the first and third rows 17-1 , 17- 3. It will be appreciated that the configuration of the baffle 1 may comprise different numbers of said rows 17 (less than or greater than three); and different numbers of cells 6 may be provided in each row 17. In some but not necessarily all examples the matrix of cells 6 is produced as a one-piece moulding.
The vehicle fuel tank 2 comprises first and second compartment 3, 4 connected by the bridge section 5. A first aperture 18 is provided in the first compartment 3 to enable installation of a fuel level sensor 19 and a fuel pump 20. A removable cap 21 is provided on the vehicle fuel tank 2 to facilitate servicing of the fuel level sensor 19. As shown in Figure 1 , the baffle 1 is installed in the second compartment 4 to help reduce sloshing of the fuel in the vehicle fuel tank 2. A closure cap 22 is disposed in a second aperture 23 formed in the upper wall 15 of the second compartment 4. The second aperture 23 is typically formed during moulding of the vehicle fuel tank 2 and has a smaller diameter than the first aperture 18. As described herein, the baffle 1 may be deformed into a collapsed state to facilitate installation within the vehicle fuel tank 2. In particular, the baffle 1 may be packaged for insertion through the first aperture 18 into the second compartment 4. A retaining loop (not
shown) is provided to retain the baffle 1 in said collapsed state. The baffle 1 is inserted into the second compartment 4 in said collapsed state and the retaining loop is then removed. The inherent resilience of the material from which the baffle 1 is formed helps to bias the baffle 1 to its expanded state. The baffle 1 is located within the second compartment 4 such that the lower edge 12 of each cell 6 abuts the lower wall 13 of the vehicle fuel tank 2; and the upper edge 14 of each cell 6 abuts against the upper wall 15 of the vehicle fuel tank 2. The vertical height of each cell 6 may be configured at least substantially to match an internal profile of the vehicle fuel tank 2. This arrangement may help to locate the baffle 1 within the vehicle fuel tank 2. Once the baffle 1 is installed, the closure cap 22 is fixedly mounted in the second aperture 23. The baffle 1 may optionally comprise a retaining mechanism, such as a clip, hook or fastener, for cooperating with the closure cap 22 to fix the baffle 1 in position. The retaining mechanism can, for example, engage the closure cap 22 to fix the baffle 1 to the vehicle fuel tank 2. Alternatively, or in addition, the vehicle fuel tank 2 may be profiled to retain the baffle 1 in position. For example, a section of the second compartment 4 may have an increased depth to receive the baffle 1 . In some examples, the position of baffle 1 within the tank 2 is not constrained by rigid connection to the tank 2.
The baffle 1 is inserted into the vehicle fuel tank 2 through the first aperture 18 when in the collapsed state. In the present embodiment the cells 6 are collapsed by folding them into a nested configuration. The folding of the baffle 1 into said collapsed state will now be described with references to Figures 4A-E. The baffle 1 is illustrated in an expanded state in Figure 4A with each cell 6 having a rhomboidal cross section. The cells 6 disposed in the first row 17-1 are collapsed by folding along the respective hinges 1 1 . In particular, the first and second panels 10-1 , 10-2 are folded inwardly towards the opposing third and fourth panels 10-3, 10-4, as shown in Figure 4B. The cells 6 in the first row 17-1 are deformed into a generally v-shaped configuration which is then folded inwardly such that the first and second panels 10-1 , 10-2 are displaced towards each other, as shown in Figure 4C. The cells 6 disposed in the third row 17-3 are then collapsed by folding the first and second panels 10-1 , 10-2 inwardly towards opposing third and fourth panels 10-3, 10-4, as shown in Figure 4D. The first and second panels 10-1 , 10-2 of the cell 6 in the third row 17-3 are folded against the third and fourth panels 10-3, 10-4 of the cell 6 in the first row 17-1 . As shown in Figure 4E, the cells 6 in the first row 17-1 are thereby at least partially nested within the cells 6 in the third row 17-3. The baffle 1 may then be compressed in a concertina manner to reduce the internal volume of the cells 6. The baffle 1 may subsequently be rolled and/or folded. The retaining loop is then provided to retain the baffle 1 in the collapsed state.
The baffle 1 is installed in the vehicle fuel tank 2 during assembly. The baffle 1 in its relaxed state exhibits the desired profile of the fluid baffle. The inherent flexibility of the material enables the baffle 1 to flex and fold. The baffle 1 locates within the vehicle fuel tank 2 and engages the lower and upper walls 13, 15 to retain it in position. When fuel is introduced into the vehicle fuel tank 2, the fuel may flow into the interior regions of the cells 6. The baffle 1 operates to reduce movement of the fuel within the vehicle fuel tank 2, for example due to dynamic loads generated by the vehicle V. The baffle 1 may thereby help to reduce sloshing of fuel within the vehicle fuel tank 2. The vehicle V having said baffle 1 installed in the vehicle fuel tank 2 is shown schematically in Figure 5.
It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made to the baffle 1 described herein. For example, the panels 10-1 , 10-2, 10-3, 10-4 could have a rigid structure and be connected to each other by one or more hinges. The panels could, for example, be impermeable. The hinges could, for example, be co-moulded from a flexible material. The flexible hinge could, in some but not necessarily all examples, be resiliency deformable and configured to bias the panels 10-1 , 10-2, 10-3, 10-4 towards an open configuration. Alternatively, the hinges could be formed by mechanical assemblies. The hinges would allow the cells 6 to be collapsed for insertion of the baffle 1 into the vehicle fuel tank 2. The baffle 1 could then be expanded into its operative condition. One or more spring element may be provided to bias the panels 10-1 , 10-2, 10-3, 10-4 towards an open configuration. One or more locking element may be provided to lock the panels 10-1 , 10-2, 10-3, 10-4 in said open configuration.
